Chatters Term 2 Week 6
Principal’s Report
Thursday 6 June, 2019
Lockdown Practice Every year, under Health and Safety Policies, it is mandatory for schools to practice emergency evacuation
and lockdown procedures. Next week, we will be practicing our Lockdown Procedures. Lockdown Procedures
are used in schools when there is a perceived threat at the school site and for the safety of all students, staff
and visitors we stay indoors. We are aware that practicing these procedures can cause some students
distress or anxiety, so we ask that parents have a conversation with children about the importance of
practicing these procedures and that there is no risk to any student next week. All classroom teachers will
also follow up with students before next week.
School Visit – Director and Executive Director
We are very pleased to announce that the school will host our Executive Director, School Performance, Mrs
Cathy Brennan and Director, Educational Leadership, Mrs Sue Low on Wednesday 19 June. The visit will
include our school showcasing ‘best practice’ through our Visible Learning, STEM and Writing initiatives all
aimed at ensuring all students in our school make at least one year’s growth every year and our high
educational aspirations for all our students.

Visible Learning – Website and Parent Handbook
A reminder that the Visible Learning Parent Handbook is accessible
for all parents via our school website. The handbook is designed to
provide all our parents with valuable information about our school
vision, the learning pit and dispositions, learning intentions, success
criteria and using the language at home.
Additionally, on the school website under ‘Learning at our School’,
there is a new page dedicated to Visible Learning which also provides
parents with useful information on our journey to making learning
visible for all our students. From this page, parents can print the
Parent Handbook as well as the Learning Disposition posters. Well done to Evan G (4C) who
recently had a poem published
in The Village Observer
Baby news! Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Campbell who have announced that they will be expecting the birth of their
second child in November.
Visible Learning Parent Forum
We held our second Parent Forum on Tuesday night introducing parents to the Visible Learning model including The Learning Pit, Learning Dispositions, Learning Intentions, Success Criteria, This is Because and also language to use at home. Again, the forum was very well received. I would like to thank the Visible Learning Leadership Team who actively engaged with the parents on Tuesday night and it was great to see parent suggestions on how the model can be used at home.

Save the Date: The Resilient Doughnut – Parent Workshop on Wednesday 31 July 7.00-8.30pm
As mentioned in previous Chatters, our Staff Development Day Professional Learning on Monday 29 April
was with Lyn Worlsey, Director of The Resilience Centre. Staff developed their knowledge and
understanding of the Resilience Doughnut Model and how we could implement a whole school program
to build on student’s strengths to help foster their resilience.
Last Friday, a team of teachers developed a Whole School Peer Support Program which will be
implemented in Term 3 with our Year 5 and 6 students being provided with leadership opportunities by
delivering the program each week, building on each student’s strengths to further improve resilience.
As part of this initiative, Lyn Worsley will be presenting a Parent ‘The Resilience Doughnut Model’
Workshop on Wednesday 31 July, commencing at 7pm. The parent workshop will conclude at 8.30pm,
however, Lyn will stay back after 8.30pm to have a tea/coffee with parents and answer any individual
questions you may have.
Kindergarten 2020
Enrolment packs are now available from the front office for children beginning school next year. Please let
any friends or neighbours with Kindergarten aged children know.
National Consistent Collection of Data for Students with Disabilities
This term, the learning and support team will be working with classroom teachers to collect data on the
students who are receiving adjustments to meet additional learning and support needs. All government
and non-government schools are required to take part in the data collection. This data will be provided to
the Australian Government to assist in the development of a consistent, national picture of the education
needs of students with disability. The information collected helps teachers, principals, education
authorities and families to better support students with disability to take part in school on the same basis
as students without disability.
Save The Date!
Monday 5 August: Education Week Open Classrooms 11.30 – 2.00pm
More information will be sent home closer to the date.

Double Parking on Cullen St
Double parking has become a huge issue again this term and we are only back one and a half weeks. A
reminder to parents, not only is it illegal to double park, but it is also extremely dangerous for students
and is sending a very wrong message to students of our school. Under no circumstances should any child
be encouraged to walk out onto a road between moving cars to get into a vehicle. Please consider the
safety of your children over convenience.

Zone Cross Country Carnival 2019
Last Thursday we had some very excited children attending the Zone Cross Country Carnival which was
held at Blackman Park. Although the weather was sunny, it quite chilly, but the children soon warmed up
when they ran their race. Everyone ran so well, and all the children should be proud of their efforts. Jett
N. was the only one who made it through to the next round. We wish Jett the very best of luck for the
next carnival. Many thanks must go to all our lovely parents who helped supervise our team, with special
mention to Mark (Lachlan’s dad) and Stefan (Vanessa’s dad) who were our parent Team Managers. They
did a fantastic job making sure all our wonderful runners got to their race on time.
Congratulations everyone!

Crazy Hair Day
Last Wednesday's Crazy Hair Day raised a total of $783.20 for the Sydney
Children's Hospital Network! Thank you for all of your generous donations.
This is a fantastic result! Thank you to the 3-6 SRC who helped run the lolly
guessing competition. The correct number was 444 and the winning guess
was Augi 2C. The runners up were Marius 5C and Samuel 4C.
Ryde District Debating Competition
On Tuesday, 28 May our first debating team made up of Luke B, Elizabeth C, Jackson S and Giuliana R
participated in their first Ryde District Debating Competition. These amazing debaters gave up their time at
home and during school to prepare their speeches against the first opposition team from Eastwood Heights
Public School. They did exceptionally well on the topic: "We should ban reality TV shows involving kids". It
comes as no surprise that the winner for this round was Lane Cove West Public School. Congratulations to
this wonderful team and good luck to our next debating team held in week 7.

K-2 Enrichment Workshop
Last Saturday, 84 students K-2 participated in the K-2 Enrichment Workshops. Students thoroughly
enjoyed their workshops in the areas of engineering, biology, physics, chemistry, technology, music,
soccer, writing and illustrating. These workshops would not have been possible without our parents
volunteering their expertise and time on Saturday – thank you Tim, Belinda, Josh, Caroline, Leo,
Catherine, Rocky, Isabella and Aura, we appreciate the opportunities that you provided to our students.
Additionally, many staff members volunteered their time on Saturday afternoon to ensure supervision
and duty of care obligations were met and these workshops would not have been possible without their
support so on behalf of the community I would like to thank Miss Kennedy, Mrs Gee, Mrs Carlson, Ms
Sullivan, Mr Clifford, Miss Akhan, Miss Szeto, Mrs Stepcich, Ms Saul and Mrs Stephens. I would like to
acknowledge all the organisation that goes into making these workshops the success it was, so a special
thank you to Mrs Saul for taking the lead in all the organisation, planning and delivery of the day.
We will be organising the 3-6 Enrichment Workshop for Term 3, so if you are a parent with expertise and
talent in any field and would like to be involved, please contact either Ms Saul or Miss Kennedy who will
be organising the workshop.

Tutoring:
A reminder for students who attend music tutoring at school. Parents are responsible for supervising
their students whilst attending music lessons. Students should not be waiting alone at school prior to
lessons starting. Students may enter the classroom 5 minutes prior to their lesson in order to prepare. It
is unfair to the person having a lesson to have other students in the classroom prior to this time.
Want to play percussion?
We have a new percussion tutor who is interested in providing lessons at school provided there are
sufficient students interested. Please contact Jane for further details if you are interested.

Become a volunteer ethics teacher
Do something life-changing this year
For around an hour a week, you can teach an ethics class at your local school and help children develop skills for life.
Ethics classes support children to develop the skills they need to voice their opinions, consider the ideas of others and to make decisions based on evidence and reasoning rather than habit or peer pressure.
In ethics classes, children discuss ethical issues using an approved curriculum designed for each age group and include topics such as Laziness, Voting, How can we work out what’s true? and Imagining how others feel.
Volunteers are needed now to teach ethics classes at a school near you. Training and support is provided.

Primary Ethics seeks volunteers to deliver weekly ethics classes to children across NSW. While close to 40,000 children in government primary schools currently benefit from ethics education, with more volunteers it could be made available to many more.
Primary Ethics is the not-for-profit organisation that is authorised to develop and deliver special education in ethics to children in NSW.
We rely on parents, grandparents and community-minded people to become volunteer ethics teachers in their local primary school. It is a rewarding way to be involved in your local community, learn new things and help children develop skills for life.
Comprehensive training, access to lesson materials and classroom support are all provided. Previous teaching experience is not required.
Opportunities are also available for behind-the scenes roles including coordinators and regional managers.
– Dr Simon Longstaff The Ethics Centre
““In time, not very much time at all, it will be the decisions of the children we teach today that will shape the world.
