This is an attractive deep-red Scoria stone from Taupo. Used as a ground cover on gardens or as pot toppers. Use under a BBQ grill to maintain an even charcoal heat that enhances flavours. Can also be used to improve garden drainage.

HydrangeasHydrangeas are a beautiful summer flowering plant that will add a pop of colour, texture and vibrancy to your garden.

They come in an array of different shapes and sizes; from heavenly and fluffy looking mopheads, to a more flat, simplistic lacecap variety, and the peculiar looking paniculata. However, regardless of the type, they can look stunning as long as you know what to do.

Plant Type:

Mopheads - These are the most popular hydrangeas whose leaves are relatively thick and crisp, somewhat shiny, and often heart-shaped. Many recognize these due to their globe shaped large puffy flower heads.

Lacecap - These are almost identical to mophead hydrangeas with the only difference existing in its flowers. They have tiny fertile flower buds in the center, with showy flowers that circle the edge of the flower head.

Paniculata - Panicle hydrangeas are known for their cone shaped flower heads. These are large blooms typically seen in shades of white, green, pink and red. These showy flowers are sterile, and their only purpose is to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies to the fertile buds in the center.

The importance of watering Your garden needs plenty of water to stay healthy – a bit like us really. Installing an irrigation system will save you the hassle of standing around with a hose in your hand.

An irrigation system will also ensure your garden gets just the right amount of water. Not too little, not too much. Installing your own system isn’t difficult. All it takes is a basic understanding of the plants in your garden and a bit of planning.

Planting Beds Choosing plants is one the most important steps in any new garden design or garden transformation. Which plants you choose for your garden will depend on many factors, from the orientation of your garden to its size and soil type, as well as your own preferences.

Shrubs You can use shrubs individually to anchor a house, or line them up to divide areas on your deck or in your garden. Greenery and shrubs are so versatile and a great way to bring in structure and colour into your home and garden. There are many different varieties of shrubs that all vary in different features and benefits.

Plant Type

Evergreen Shrubs – these can be very low maintenance plants, provided you pick the right ones. Most don’t need regular pruning, and many have attractive flowers that will add some variety to your garden.

Assorted Hebes – one of the most versatile native shrubs. Hebes are hardy and reliable, and are an ideal landscaping plant for gardens, banks or coastal areas.

Lavender – These are easy to grow and just as easy to care for. Plant in a position that gets a lot of sunshine, and you will be rewarded with a long flowering period. Lavender provides a beautiful aroma and adds vibrant colour to your garden. They are also a bee-friendly plant!

When choosing a hedge the options are wide and varied. But for best results, it pays to look around at what’s growing successfully in your locality.

Deciding exactly what (and where) to plant is not so easy. It depends on what you are trying to achieve with planting hedges – whether it be for shelter, privacy, fencing or as a decorative border around your home. Hedges can be divided up easily into three sections: Slow Growing, Tall, and Flowering Shrubs.

Handy hintsPlants generally benefit from a light pruning, reduce the leading shoots to a uniform height and cut back any side shoots to form a straight line. Once the hedge has received the desired height then trimming is usually only required once a year.

Design hints for your landscaping project• Sketch your existing outdoor area showing property lines, the house’s orientation, driveways and paths. Start at the front corner of the house. A scale of 2.5 centimetres per 3m works well, but pick whatever works for you and stay consistent through the drawing.• Do a site analysis. Note all significant features like sunny and shady spots, prevailing winds, drainage problems, existing vegetation, good and poor views and all utilities and easements.• Using a bubble diagram roughly indicating the shapes and locations of both existing and new features to plan your layout.
