What is Landscape Lighting?

Landscape lighting is used to illuminate aspects of a building’s exterior and the surrounding landscape. Lighting is typically low voltage, which is safer and less costly to install. Correct installations will highlight the architecture and draw attention to the landscaping around your home or business.

Low-voltage lighting systems require the use of a transformer. Most transformers plug into a regular outdoor electrical outlet. A transformer reduces or "steps down" the 120-volt household current to 12 volts. You will find most transformers are rated to handle a load of 100 to 300 watts. The more lights in a desired project, the larger the transformer. Some installations may require multiple transformers.

Consider what materials will hold up better in the elements. Your investment should not be overlooked. Aluminum and Brass are the most common metals used in landscape lighting.

BrassBrass performs well in all environments and will last many years. Brass will not corrode, however expect it to “patina” or turn darker with age. Brass is a must for coastal environments. Therefore, Brass carries a lifetime warranty.

AluminumAluminum is the more affordable option, however it will oxidize, corrode, and the paint will fade. Aluminum is not recommended for coastal applications. Powder coated aluminum fixtures have a longer life expectancy.

GlossaryLandscape Lighting Definitions

Color Temp Kelvin(K) is the unit of measure used to describe the color temperature of the light source. The most common temperatures in landscape lighting are 2700K (typically used to highlight surroundings with warmer colors; think red, orange and yellow) & 3000K (typically used to highlight darker materials; think blue or purple)

CREE LED CREE is the leading manufacturer of LED lights in the world. Lumien utilizes CREE LED lights with all of their fixtures unless otherwise noted.

Damp Rated Damp rated light fixtures may be installed both indoors and outdoors. Damp rated light fixtures withstand moisture, but not direct contact with rain. Install damp rated lighting fixtures in protected outdoor areas or install fixtures that protect the light source with a cap or shroud.

Integrated A complete outdoor light fixture assembly, which includes a built-in LED lamp.

Kelvin (K) A measure used to describe the color temperature of the light source. (Lumien offers fixtures in 2700K & 3000K)

Lens The cover or filter in a light fixture that provides the desired viewing effect. Color lens filters give the ability to change the light color.

Light Source Lumien uses CREE LED lights for their Integrated fixtures. MR11 and MR16 bulbs are used for the Non-Integrated fixtures.

Low Voltage Safe, no risk of electrical shock, easy to install, no hard-wiring required. All Lumien fixtures are 10-15V

Lumens Measurement of total light output or brightness of the light source. Lumens are directly affected by the wattage input. A higher wattage will also yield a brighter output.

Non-Integrated A light fixture with the light source sold separately.

Spot Area The coverage range of a light, often referred to as beam spread. Most of the Lumien fixtures have an adjustable shroud that allows you to change the beam spread with a few turns, rather than having to swap out lenses.

Tap The spot on a transformer where you feed or “tap” the low voltage wire into the transformer. Many transformers are multi-tap, meaning there is a 12V input and a 15V input.

Transformer A device that changes electrical energy from one voltage (120V) to another voltage (10V-15V).

Voltage Drop The amount of voltage lost due to resistance in the wire. Voltage drop is directly related to the total wattage on the wire (number of fixtures) times the length of wire being used divided by the “constant” rate of the wire type you are using.

Wattage A measurement of power consumption.

Wet-Rated In a wet rated fixture the light source can be exposed to direct precipitation. Only IP 68 rated products can be submerged in water.

Wire Gauge For most installations we are referring to 12/2 gauge wire. Depending on the length of your wire run, you may need to refer to our voltage drop chart to see if a heavier gauge is required.


Types of Lights

Path Lights Path lights are intended to illuminate walkways and landscape areas. Since these areas are on the ground, we project light downward. Path lights normally include a decorative shade. This shade is to eliminate light from filtering upward keeping the lighted area clean and preventing a “washed out look.” Other lighting fixtures such as “L” Shaped, Bollards, and Puck lights can be used in pathway lighting. “L” Shaped fixtures throw light across a path, Bollard’s are used as a softer pathway marker, and a puck light will give you an unfiltered spotlight look. There are many aesthetic choices when choosing a path light.

Down Lights Placement of down lights are often high off the ground. Tree trunks and branches can be some of the most common areas. Aim these fixtures at lawns, paths, or the tree’s own foliage to create a moonlit effect. Longer shrouds will focus the light eliminating side glare.

Wall Lights Beautify and brighten your property with outdoor wall lighting. Applications include; front porches, entryways, decks, paver patios, pergolas, or any other high-traffic outdoor area. Let your imagination take over when implementing wall lights in your lighting scheme.

Spot Lights Used to highlight specific features or provide security for your property and home. Spot lights are widely used to show off the flag on your flag pole, a tree, or the architecture of your home. With different color lenses you can light your home up with the theme of the season.

Step Lights Safety is the first thought when considering step lights. There are more uses such as brightening up high foot-traffic areas or highlighting the craftsmanship of a unique staircase. Extra light will provide a warmer more inviting atmosphere in your outdoor space.

In-Ground Lights Use in-ground lights to illuminate the underside of plants, bushes, or foliage. Another common use is grazing the base of a facade or wall with a soft illumination. The integrated bulb is nested within a waterproof housing and submerged in the ground.

Adjustable Wattage Feature Until recently you would need to install non-integrated lights and change the wattage on your bulbs. The manufacturers that do offer an adjustable feature on integrated bulbs have unique tools or hard to reach adjustments. Lumien is leading the way with easy to adjust wattages.

• Brass Spotlight SP-IP-AB: This series is adjustable with a simple external dial that gives you a wattage adjustment from 1 Watt to 10 Watts.

• Brass Path light PM-SM-AB: This series is adjustable from 2 watts to 8 watts. Simply remove the cap and there is a dial on the integrated light.

Adjustable Beam SpreadIf you look under the cap of most path lights you will see a white undercoating. This undercoating is necessary in order to reflect the light toward the ground. The size of the cap determines your beam spread. Lumien is leading the way with an easy adjust beam spread.

• Aluminum Path Lights PA Series: The cap is the same color below as it is above. Lumien uses an integrated 4 watt down light with an adjustable shroud. With just a few turns you can adjust your spot area from 1.6’ to 6.6’.

• Brass Path Lights PA-SM-AB Series: The cap is the same color below as it is above. Lumien uses their adjustable integrated down light with an adjustable shroud. With just a few turns you can adjust your spot area from 2’ to 7’.

L-Shape LightsThese types of lights are normally installed on a walkway. The light shines down next to the walkway and uses ambient light to light your path.

• Lumien L-Shaped light: Uniquely the dual CREE LED’s are installed on a 30-degree angle. This provides a longer throw, up to 15’ across. This will provide a better lighted walkway utilizing less fixtures.

Micro-LightsThe most innovative light to hit the market in recent years. These lights are fully integrated with CREE LED’s are completely modular and made of solid brass construction. There are more than a dozen accessory add-ons to make this fixture into a recessed light or down light. Only available from Lumien.

Where to beginOrganizing Your Project

• What do you want to gain in illuminating your space? • What is the function of the space you want to illuminate?• Brass fixtures or Aluminum fixtures?

Sketch a PlanSketch a plan of your vision. Break it out into separate areas or zones. For example: The front Porch, Walkway, Driveway, Swimming pool, Kitchen Island, Fire Pit, or Paver Patio. You may want your entire backyard illuminated, it all depends on what you want.

• Illuminating specific areas will help you create your own personal look.• Safety will be your first thought when lighting pathways and stairs.• If you want to draw attention to a feature Choose some type directional

lighting.• Pick lighting with the right types of adjustments to create the ambiance

you are looking for.

Don’t be afraid to mix your types of fixtures. A lighting plan should include layers. Unique fixtures will work together in creating a functional and eye-catching result.

Voltage DropWhat is the Concern?

Voltage drop in low-voltage 12 Volt landscape lighting is a challenge that lighting installers must consider on every job. Too many watts or not enough watts will significantly reduce the life of the light source. Worse, it could negatively affect the transformers themselves.

How do we eliminate this concern?

• Install a transformer that has higher voltage taps and/or multiple taps available.• Utilizing a higher voltage tap will help eliminate the chance for the voltage to drop below 12 volts.• Voltage drops occur as power travels through your wire over distance. The longer the distance the more the voltage drops. Most

landscape lighting fixtures need between 12 volts and 15 volts to function properly and maintain a long life. • Every installer should have and know how to read a digital voltmeter. This will tell you your voltage at each fixture. This is a sim-

ple, inexpensive, and easy tool to use. • Don’t be afraid to use more than one transformer on an install. This could make an install easier. Shorter wire runs will also help

prevent large voltage drops.

There is a calculation used called the “voltage drop calculation.” This will allow you to calculate the voltage drop prior to the install. This can help you plan what size transformer and/or how many transformers to use. This will also determine what size wire you should use, so you are not undersized thus compromising the install.

Example: Total Wire Run of 100’ x (10) 5-Watt Lights or 50 Watts / 7500 = .67 Voltage drop

In this example I am running 100’ of 12-2 wire. Over that 100’ I am losing .67 volts. I need to use a tap that is 13 Volts or higher.

This chart displays the maximum amount of feet per single run on 12 gauge or 10 gauge power cable with about 0.3 voltage drop.

12v Tap at 14, 16 or 18 g wire is charted at 8.5v - common minimal voltage for LED light fixtures.

Check your LED fixture voltage requirements. This chart is for use as a guide only to help you begin your lighting project. We strongly recommend checking the actual voltage at each fixture with a volt meter before finalizing your project.

Chart Example: If you are running 12g cable on a 14v Tap with a 230W load, the maximum length of your run should be 43’. Any longer, you will experience a noticeable voltage drop.
