03: BIO
Candis Shiflett is completing her under-
graduate studies in landscape architecture
at North Carolina State University and will
graduate in May 2013. Her passion in land-
scape architecture is focused in community
and urban design to improve people’s lives
and to rebuild lost or weakened connections
to the land. Her current research interests
lie in the use of eco-revelatory techniques,
primarily storm water, in urban settings. In
addition to the Bachelors of Landscape
Architecture degree, Candis will graduate
with a minor degree in Art & Design. She
hopes that her passion for and skills in
drawing will enhance her professional
landscape architecture career.
04 PRIMROSE CONNECTION:
NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY
This project was developed in the “Design Development” Studio where I learned
to take the design through not only the conceptual and schematic design phase
but to also complete a full set of construction documents.
The site is located on the east side of North Carolina State University. It is current-
ly a parking lot for the adjacent buildings. We were able to work with the Campus
Architect’s office to develop designs that were directed toward the possibility of a
future redesign of the site. The campus identified the site as a transitional space
and wanted to program to convey such. The campus is planning to transform the
parking lot in the near future.

07SCHEMATIC DESIGN:
MAkING THE CONNECTION
In my design, my main goal was to
connect the “hollowed” and “iconic” places that
were currently separated by an unattractive
parking lot. Conceptually I wanted to create
framed views to important places through path
direction and vegetative framing.
I designed places for new “hearths” and a warm
comfortable transition space which directs the
users view to important campus icons through
the use of plant and hardscape materials, and
form.
Plan and Perspective sketches are colored
pencil & ink on vellum, Sections are Ink on Vellum.
08 CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENT CLIPPINGS
After completing the Schematic Design
phase, my proposal began a series of
studies translating ideas into buildable
elements. In this studio I was able to go
through the process of producing Exist-
ing Conditions, Erosion Control and Tree
Protection, Demolition, Grading, Planting,
Layout and Materials Plans, and Custom
Details. These allowed me to review and
refine your design ideas,
as well as make new discoveries
enabled by the rigor of the process.

11URBAN DESIGN- GREENING HARGETT STREET:
DOWNTOWN RALEIGH NORTH CAROLINA
The focus of my urban design studio in downtown Raleigh was in the
retrofit of existing urban infrastructure by exploring the transforma-
tion of Hargett Street in downtown Raleigh from it’s current condition
into an urban greenway. The goals of the project include maximizing
non-motorized movement and comfort, as well as stimulating com-
munity development, across its length. Hargett Street was chosen
for to it’s connections to many significant downtown Raleigh assets
including Moore Square, and the future Union Station. Hargett street
stretches from historic and traditional neighborhoods in the east, to
the urban center of Raleigh, to the emerging warehouse district to
the west. In this sense, it represents an urban transect; a descriptive
line reflecting the wide range of urban conditions present in down-
town Raleigh. This context offered a unique opportunity to explore
the transformation of a consistent landscape (Hargett street) moving
through diverse conditions.
Each student was asked to choose an area along the corridor for a more specific intervention. I
chose to focus my study in the residential area of Hargett Street which currently feels very discon-
nected from the dense urban center of downtown which is just blocks away. The city plans to
expand the density up to the edge of the neighborhood district. My design offers a solution for
transition as well as connection while respecting the city’s wish to increase density. I had three
goals I was addressing: 1. Create healthier food access to an area which is considered a food des-
ert, 2. create healthy mobility whether it be pedestrian or vehicular, 3. create cleaner air/water
through material choices.

Community Gardens serve as a transitional ele-
ment in density in my design. The design in-
cludes: shade and water collection tarps, cargo
bike rental spaces, storage and compost areas,
children’s play area, an educational room, as
well as a wildflower collection garden.
This “Baseline” design offers minimal change
with big impact. It includes new features to
the site boundary such as: walkway lighting,
2020 linear ft. of sharrow signage, painted
crosswalks, pervious pavers, curb bumpouts
and 85 new trees.
This “Past Peak Oil” design offers maximum
change with maximum impact. It includes
new features to my site boundary such as:
planter lighting along widened walkways (5
ft. or more), 2020 linear ft. of sharrow signage,
permeable parking , raised pervious paved
crosswalks with curb bumpouts and 90 addi-
tional trees.13

17LINkING LIFE AND WATERFRONT:
PRAGUE, CzECH REPUBLIC:
HOLEŠOVICE DISTRICT
While studying in Prague, I was able to take an
urban design studio which had significant focus
on the perception and behaviors of cultures as
well as the urban structure of cities throughout
Europe. I worked in a team to develop a design
for the revitalization of an area along the Vltalva
river that connected to the Holešovice neigh-
borhood. The current conditions were unsafe
and created little access or no desire to visit the
waterfront.
18 HOLESOVICE REVITALIzATION
19LINkING LIFE AND WATERFRONT:
PRAGUE, CzECH REPUBLIC: HOLEŠOVICE DISTRICT
Holešovice Is located just north, across the Vltava river from central Prague. It is
a residential neighborhood with many different businesses throughout. While it’s
proximity to the riverfront is optimal, the current “connection” to the river front is
not strong, and the area is seen negatively. The riverfront is in need of attention
and help in order to serve the community and others properly.
My team’s main goal through our design was to improve the quality of life along
the river front as well as create an enjoyable and leisurely experience for the user.
We hoped our design would create appreciation for the riverfront and develop
and identity for the area that would aid in economic and community growth.
We spent a great deal of time researching native perceptions and other projects
throughout Europe to determine what would be a positively perceived plan.
20LINkING LIFE AND WATER-
FRONT: GIVING COLOR TO THE
HOLEŠOVICE DISTRICT
My main contributions to the team were field
studies, contribution of case studies and
defining relevance, as well as organizing the
final presentation and presentation graph-
ics. I particularly enjoying depicting the area
illustratively , I felt I was giving true visualiza-
tion to the possibility of transformation into a
beautiful waterfront community.
Illustrative plan done by myself (ink, water color,
digital). Sections drawn by teammate M. Domanski,
colored by myself (color pencil).
21 LINkING LIFE AND WATERFRONT
Please note: sections are only arranged in this format for this portfolio and do no depict relation to one another.
My part in the team included everything from developing questionnaires, to meeting with citizens during the charette to gather their opinions, ideas, and needs to developing renderings and plans that described possibilities for how their needs could be better met. Some of the techniques I used to convey ideas included connectivity plans as well as Photoshop visualizations.
Met with citizens to gather their ideas and opinions to better address their needs and desires for the town.
I used Photoshop renderings to show how an area could look. In this school zone I proposed additional safety measures such as crosswalks.
Depicting a community art idea some citizens were interested in: wall murals are an inexpensive way to improve build-ing appearance and town image.
22 COMMUNITY DESIGN: WENDELL NC
Through a community design course, I was
given the opportunity to participate as a
member of a team in a community design
workshop. The town of Wendell is facing
future growth and was looking for advice
for future planning and changes for commu-
nity improvement. We divided into teams:
Community Identity, Regional Planning.
Streetscape & Public Spaces, and Buildings
and Structural Elements. As co-leader of the
streetscapes and public spaces committee,
our main goal was to assess the concerns
of the citizens of Wendell regarding their
streetscapes and public spaces. Our method
for collecting this data was a questionnaire as
well as a group discussion. During the group
discussion we recorded the main concerns of
the citizens, which they then voted on. We
then developed design ideas and proposals
and presented them at a later town meeting.
23 COMMUNITY DESIGN:
WENDELL, NC
Many citizens of the town had concerns with particular intersections. I aided in visualizing options for improvement as well as provided plans for these options.
A clip of the Bicycle & Pedestrian Connectivity plan my team and I
developed.
24CONSTRUCTION :
BUS SHELTER DESIGN
During a construction materials course I
worked in a team to design a bus shel-
ter. We developed renderings as well as
a mock up of a section of the shelter. The
bus shelter design with would be posi-
tioned near the North Carolina AIA build-
ing and nearby Seaboard Station, a shop-
ping center. As a team member I aided
in site & material analysis, organizing the
final boards, and the final rendering of the
bus shelter. We also worked together to
build the mock up.
