On completion of the new Water

Police Headquarters building at

Jubilee Place, Balmain, it was

recognised that the adjacent sand-

stone rock cutting and excavated

batter would be unstable in the long

term. EarthTEC was approached

to review the site conditions and

present a proposal for stabilising

the excavated bank.

From the report prepared by DJ

Douglas Geotechnical, a series of

typical X-Sections were analysed

and a design and construct pro-

posal was prepared. Gabions were

selected as they complemented the

existing structures and the adjacent

exposed sandstone cuttings.

Space was limited at the site, so a

gravity wall was used with provision for

rock anchors if adverse ground

condtions were encountered when the

final excavated profile was exposed.

Due to the significance of the site,

a lengthy approval process followed

with the various stakeholders visiting

other EarthTEC sites to evaluate the

expected gabion finished aesthetics.

The NSW Department of Commerce

selected EarthTEC as the nominat-

ed specialist for the gabion wall de-

sign & construction, based on the

quality of similar walls built by

EarthTEC’s crews at Waverton Park

for North Sydney Council.

The project architect expressed

his satisfaction with EarthTEC’s

work and noted praise from local

residents confirming that the fin-

ished gabion walls are an attractive

addition to the works and an

enhancement to the landscaping

of the site in general.
