A B S T R A C T

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY that employs electronically linkedblocks of words and images requires rhetorical and stylistic rulesdifferent from those for one employing physically isolated pages set

in a fixed sequence. After discussing the reader's need for arrival,departure, and navigation information in hypermedia, the essay ex-

amines various system solutions to these needs and then proposes rulesof hypermedia rhetoric concerning the creation of overview or directoryfiles, placement and labeling of link markers, and relation of visual toverbal information.

I N T R O D U C T I O N

H YPERTEXT CHANGES the way texts exist and the way weread them. Hypermedia, the amplification of hypertext that alsoincorporates sound and visual material, links nonverbal as well

problems that face hypermedia readers and authors. Although othersystems do not have to use precisely these solutions, they should havesome analogous means of assisting readers. The Intermedia folder

system permits readers to begin their search for information by present-ing a hierarchical organization. Although readers use links as theirprimary means of moving throughout the system, they begin each ses-sion by confronting a desktop on which appear subject folders rangingfrom Anthropology and Biology to Visual Arts. After opening a webthat generates a selection of links readers wanting (to retrieve) informa-tion about Tennyson's poem In Memoriam begin by opening theEnglish folder, after which they open that labeled "Tennyson." Once

inside the Tennyson folder, they chose either the Tennyson overview(See Figure 1 ) or the In Memoriam overview. At this point, readers uselinks to navigate through the materials. The folder system, which pro-

Furthermore, by conveying information aboutthe documents linked to the documents one has activated, the web viewalso shows readers their present position in relation to other materialsand also furnishes an efficient means of traveling to them. Both the webview and folder system thus permit readers to orient themselves comfort-ably in a welter of information.

Link markers and block descriptors (See Figure 3.), the labels In-termedia authors attach to linked blocks, emphasize the presence of in-dividual points of departure and multiple points of arrival rather than

navigation of the entire system. Link markers and block descriptors, inother words, assist readers in orienting themselves in relation to in-dividual links and groups of links, whereas the web view and folder

George P. Landow , Professor o f English and Art, Brown University, holds theAB, MA, and PhD from Princeton University and an MA from BrandeisUniversity. Landow, who has written on nineteenth-century literature, art,and religion as well as on educational computing, has taught at Columbia, theUniversity of Chicago, Brasenose College, Oxford, and Brown Universities~

He has been a Fulbright Scholar (1963-4), twice a Guggenheim Fellow (1973,1978), and a Fellow of the Society for the Humanities at Cornell University(1968-9), and he has received numerous grants and awards from National En-dowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Art.
