Nigeria’s plastics industry is fast growing
The EUROMAP Plastics Resin Production and Consumption Country Cluster of February 2019 confirms significant growth for Nigeria:
• The per capita consumption of plastics in Nigeria has grown by about 3.6% annually over the past ten years, from 4.0 kg in 2007 to 5.9 kg in 2018 and is estimated to be 6.8 kg in 2022.
• Nigeria’s plastics consumption has grown by 6.5% annually over the past ten years, from 578 kt in 2007 to 1.148 kt in 2017 and is estimated to be 1.478 kt in 2022.
• Nigeria‘s plastics production has grown by 10.3% annually over the past years, from 120 kt in 2007 to 436 kt in 2018 and is estimated to be 523 kt in 2022.
• Nigeria’s plastics consumption by application in 2018: 55% of consumption is accounted for by packaging, 16% by construction, 6% for automotive and the remainder by various industries.
• Nigeria’s plastics consumption by processing method in 2018: In plastics processing, extrusion is in the lead with 51%, followed by injection molding with 23%, blow molding with 8% and PET preform & stretch blow molding with 11%.

Nigeria is Africa’s third largest importer of plastics in primary formsWith 72% of raw materials imported (mainly from the Middle East, Europe and Asia) and only 28% produced locally, the Nigerian market has great potential for exporters of plastics in primary forms. In the years 2008 to 2017, for example, imports of plastic raw materials increased annually by 5.2% from 464 kt to 729 kt, +57%! This makes Nigeria, after Egypt and Algeria, Africa‘s third largest importer of plastics in primary forms!

Why exhibit?
Nigeria soon to become the largest importer of plastics technology in Africa
• With 115 million euros in 2018 (+21% compared to 2017), Nigeria is the second largest importer of plastics technology in Sub-Sahara Africa and the fourth largest in Africa, just behind Algeria (153 million euros), Egypt (148 million euros) and South Africa (125 million euros).
• But while South Africa‘s imports not only failed to grow between 2014 and 2018, but even dropped from 132 to 125 million euros, Nigeria‘s imports increased by an average of 7.2% per year over the same period. (Source for all figures: VDMA)
• So Nigeria will soon overtake South Africa. And due to its high and sustained investments in its plastics industry and its immense population of 201 million, which according to the United Nations will increase to 411 million by 2050, it is all too likely that Nigeria will become the number one in Africa within the next five years. A position the country is likely to take in the long term.

• But while South Africa‘s imports failed to grow, Nigeria‘s imports increased by an average of 10.2% per year between 2015 and 2018. So Nigeria will soon be passing South Africa by.
• Nigeria’s immense population of currently 200 million, which according to the United Nations will rise to 400 million by 2050, requires strong sustainable growth. This is why Nigeria invests heavily in its packaging industry
About plastprintpack Nigeria
Voices of the exhibitors 2019
Girolamo DagostinoAMAPLAST Italian Plastics and Rubber Processing Machinery and Moulds Manufacturers‘ Association
Nigeria is a very promising country for plastics and rubber machinery producers. As our exports increase year by year we are highly interested in this region.
For us plastprintpack & agrofood is an important way to explore this upcoming market. The exhibition joins together the aspects of the plastic chain. This is very important.
Julian BanseRegional Manager Technical Sales - W&H Windmoeller & Hoelscher
The size of the Nigerian market increasing, the quality demands are also rising. Thus our customers have to move from low-cost machines to high-end solutions and we’re glad to assist and to participate in this growth.
plastprintpack Nigeria provides a perfect platform for us to get in touch with potential new customers and to welcome all our existing clients in order to exchange on their situation and projects.
The German Pavilion is a great platform as “Made in Germany” has still got a very high recognition in the industry. Meeting both, our customers and the other regular exhibitors, provides a great atmosphere for everyone.
