STANDARD SAFETY FEATURESThe SJ Parts Washer uses electricity to operate. Thiscan be fatal if not handled properly. For this reason, theSJ has been designed with safety in mind. The followingare standard safety features you will find.
1. One Hour Wash Timer and Indicator LightThis switch insures that the parts washer will turnoff the pump at a specific elapsed time.
2. Low Water Float Switch and Indicator LightThis float switch insures that there is water coveringthe heating element. Before the water level dropsand begins to expose the heating element, the lowwater float switch turns off the heaters and washpump and turns on the low water indicator light.
3. 7-Day Programmable Heater TimerConserves energy by turning heating elements onand off at operator set times, when machine is not inuse. Allows 3 hours for the machine to come up totemperature.
4. Spray Arm StopWhen the wash timer turns off, a hinged stop willdrop down to prevent the spray arm from spinningwhen the door is opened.
5. Temperature ControlThe high temperature control monitors the internaltemperature of the parts washer and maintains wa-ter temperature at prescribed set point.
INSTALLATION 1. Location-Locate the SJ Parts Washer on a level con-
crete surface in a room that is well ventilated. Pro-tect from damaging environments such as wind, rain, sun and freezing temperatures.
2. Electrical-This parts washer is designed for indooroperation. Refer to the serial plate for proper voltageand amp requirements. All electrical lines must betested with a voltage meter for proper voltage beforeconnecting.NOTE: Correct Rotation of Pump Motor - After con-necting electrical power to parts washer check forproper rotation of pump motor. Correct rotation isclockwise looking from the fan end of the motor. Fail-ure to check rotation and having the motor operatein a counterclockwise rotation will damage the pump.Damage will consist of the impeller coming loosefrom the motor shaft damaging the impeller, shaftseals and pump housing.CAUTION: All electrical lines must be installedonly by qualified personnel. All installations mustbe electrically grounded and conform to all localand National Electrical codes. The electrical connection is located on the rear ofthe control panel using a 1" knock-out. 4. Obtain a detergent that is designed for parts washerapplications and that will be suitable for the partsbeing cleaned. The detergent must have anti-rustinhibitors added to keep the parts washer fromrusting.
5. Fill water tank just below the chip tray. Dissolve andmix the recommended detergent before pouring intowater tank.NOTE: The detergent must be thoroughly mixed be-fore adding to tank. To ensure detergent mixes prop-erly and does not foam, make sure machine is up tooperating temperature before adding any detergent.
6. Because of the amount of water/detergent vaporsemitted from this machine, an exhaust stack shouldbe attached to the top of the machine and ventedoutside. The stack is 6" flanged. A 6" vent, in a singlepiece design, should be installed in compliance withall local codes. If the stack has seams, the seamsmust be sealed with sealant to prevent moistureleaks.
PRE-START CHECKLISTFollow all pre-start procedures before attempting tostart the SJ-100A, B, C; SJ-150A, B, C; SJ-250B, Cand the SJ-350B, C. 1. Level the machine. Once level, elevate front of
machine 1/4". Anchor to floor. 2. Verify the voltage, then connect the electrical lines
to the machine. 3. Detergent and water have been added to water tank.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Voltage light should be illuminated if power supply is
connected. Low water light should be off when tankwater level is correct.
2. Push heater switch to timer position. The heaterswitch ON position will override the timer switch.Turn the heating element on by setting the 7-day pro-grammable heater timer. Set the timer by pulling outtrippers on dial to set desired heating element ON
times. Turn dial clockwise until the time of day is ad-jacent to time arrow. Heater light will illuminate whenheater element is ON. Allow about three hours forwater to reach operating temperature. In case ofpower failure, reset clock on timer.
3. Set adjustable thermostat (Optional) to the desiredtemperature. Suggested operating range is between130 to 170. The surface thermostat behind the con-trol panel is set at 170.NOTE: Most soaps work best between 140 to 165.
4. Push door latch down to open door and place theitems to be cleaned into the parts basket. Then closethe door and hook the latch to lock the door. To pre-vent lifting injuries, use caution when lifting parts inor out.
5. Rotate the wash timer dial to the desired time setpoint (numbers on the face of the timer are in minuteintervals). The wash cycle light will illuminate. Thissetting will vary with the degree and type of clean-ing.
6. To operate the optional skimmer, push the oil skim-mer switch to the timer position. Set timer on back ofcontrol panel by pulling out trippers on dial to setskimmer to come ON when heating elements areOFF. Oil will separate from water better as tem-perature cools.
7. The exhaust fan option is operated by turning theexhaust fan switch ON when the machine is oper-ating. This will prevent steam vapors from enteringthe room when the door is opened and increasingthe evaporation rate which requires fresh watermakeup that keeps wash water cleaner.

MAINTENANCECAUTION: Use protective gloves, goggles and anyother protective clothing required by law for chemi-cals mixed with the waste stream. This machine does not require a lot of maintenance, butit does require consistent maintenance. The frequencyof maintenance will vary depending on what is in thewater.General maintenance will consist of removal of sludgefrom the bottom of the wash tank and removal of anyfloating oil in the wash tank.WARNING: Shut down the parts washer and allow itto cool before performing any maintenance. Do notallow pump to run longer than 5 minutes withoutwater. Disconnect all hoses to allow water to drain.
Oil Removal:If you have floating oil in the wash tank that needs to beremoved, shut down the machine and let the oil float tothe top. Set oil skimmer timer to come on automaticallyor turn on oil skimmer manually. Let run for 30 minutes.
Sludge Removal:Remove the lower 3" pipe plug on the side of the ma-chine allowing all of the water to escape. Use a smallshovel to remove the residual sludge from the bottom ofthe tank. Removing the sludge and cleaning the floor ofthe SJ Parts Washer will greatly increase the life of theheating elements.CAUTION: Disposal of contaminated water mustcomply with local and federal EPA regulations.
Spray Arm:The spray nozzles should be checked regularly for ob-struction and cleaned by removing and inserting a probe. The spray arm nozzle angle on both spray arms shouldbe mounted in the same direction.
Filters:With the tank empty, clean the suction pump strainer. Ifyou have the strainer filter, turn off the parts washer andtwist the strainer basket off, remove the filter screen.Clean when pressure gauge shows a 10 PSI decreasefrom start up pressure.
OPTIONSAutomatic Water Fill #21-110The auto fill option consists of two float switches electri-cally connected to a solenoid valve, which is connectedto a fresh water supply line to add water automatically tomaintain the water level.
Polyester Bag Filtration System#21-249 (SJ-100) #21-232 (SJ-150)#21-233 (SJ-250) #21-225 (SJ-350)A 30 micron bag collects particles from recirculating washwater to keep wash water clean for a longer period oftime.
Small Parts Basket #21-140This basket is 12" x 6" x 5" and comes equipped with alid to accommodate small parts that would fall throughthe holes of the standard basket.
