The History of Land Rover Discovery 3
The Land Rover Discovery is the
mostly awarded 4x4 in history.
Dubbed Project Jay in its early
days, it is the only vehicle to be
awarded with 97 international
awards for just a single production
4x4. The multi-awarded 4-wheel
drive is arguably considered today
as a living legend in the world of
cars.
Introduction
Discovery 4 or LR 4
While there are lots of
Discovery models ranging from
the earliest 1994 models to
present Discovery 4 or LR4
model, we will focus on one of
the latest models which are the
Discovery 3.
The Land Rover Discovery was manufactured in the late 2000's between
2005 and 2009. It had the design of a 5-door SUV. It came with the
following engine options: the 2-liter AJD-V6, PSA DT-17, TDV6, the 4-liter
Ford Cologne V6 and the 4.4-liter Jaguar AJ-V8. The Jaguar engine took
road adventure to the extreme.
Brief History
The car had a transmission of 6
speeds with manual and automatic
options. The wheelbase had a curb
weight of 2,461 kg and is 113.6
inches.

It’s predecessor: the Series
Although its predecessor was the Series II, the Land Rover Discovery 3
shared little similarities in both design and components. It was
introduced as a new model while retaining the key design of the
features of the Discovery. Of its new features, one of the most exciting
was the Integrated Body Frame, better known as IBF.
It was developed to "upgrade" the series
from a traditional, strong ladder frame
chassis. In contrast to the old frame which
was still great for an off road experience,
the IBF is easier to handle and is less
heavy when on the road. The Monocoque
system which allowed higher speed
driving is an alternative to the strong
ladder frame system.
Integrated Body Frame or IBF
The all new IBF is said to merge these
systems, providing a Monocoque
system for the engine bay and
passenger compartment.
The ladder chassis is integrated under
the gearbox and suspension. The
outlooks about the car’s performance
of the IBF differ from person to person
many will say that this extra weight is
the reason why the Land Rover
Discovery 3 is the first to be produced
with a rear locking differential.
Another Feature of the
Land Rover Discovery 3 Another key feature in the Land Rover Discovery 3 is the FIS or the Full
Independent Suspension. By pumping or deflating the system, you are able to
modify the height of the vehicle with this air suspension system. This enabled the
vehicle to traverse across different landscapes whereby one can raise or lower it
for a safer and more comfortable handling. However, many say that this new
feature caused the car to bottom out when taking it off the road.

A solution presented was
installing a cross linked air
suspension system that works
like a beam axle.
Conclusions
All the new features were integrated to suit the newer model to
the ever-changing 4x4 market. Most of the time today, more
owners are using 4x4s exclusively on the road. Smooth,
comfortable rides became a priority over off road performance.
To accommodate this market
demand, the Land Rover Discovery
3 was designed. While befitting the
preferences of car owners who
demand comfortable rides,
Discovery 3 is still a real 4x4 with
an arguably good performance off
road.
