The Land Rover 6 x 6 was originally developed to meet the requirements of the Australian Army for a 2 tonne payload cross country vehicle. Extensive performance, durability, climatic and user trials were conducted by the Australian Army against international competition , leading to the selection of Land Rover 4 x 4 and 6 x 6 vehicles for volume production.

The 6 x 6 vehicle is adaptable to a wide range of specialised civilian roles. Currently approved Australian Army derivatives comprise Cargo/Personnel Carrier, Air Defence Vehicles (Rapier and RBS 70), Ambulance, General Repair and Electronics Repair Vehicles and a Long Range Patrol Vehicle. Other variants are being considered or developed both for the Australian Army and for other cl ients , including a Command Post and Communications and Logistics vehicles.

The vehicles are available in right or left hand drive and with a variety of specifications to suit a customer's individual requirements. Land Rover's 3.5 litre VB petrol engine can be provided in lieu of the Isuzu diesel.

The modular rear bodies which are fitted to the Ambulance and Repair vehicles are manufactured for Land Rover by Jakab Pty. Ltd. , of Tamworth N.S.W. , who are specialised body builders with particular experience in the design of Ambulance rear bodies. The modular bodies share common mounting arrangements with the more basic Cargo/Personnel or Air Defence rear bodies, and can readily be interchanged for fleet rotation or removed for major repairs.

Accommodation is provided in the ambulance module for a medical attendant plus either eight seated patients , four seated and two stretcher, or four stretcher patients. Up to three persons can also be accommodated in the vehicle cab. Sufficient space and equipment is provided in the module, allowing the attendant to work freely on patients while the vehicle is moving, considerably enhancing patient survivability. This is assisted by the Land Rover 6 x 6 vehicle 's outstanding cross country ride and stability.

All Land Rover 6 x 6 derivatives are air transportable in a C130 Hercules - 2 per aircraft -without preparation. Rear body fitment to Land Rover 6 x 6 vehicles is assisted by their low chassis height and rigid chassis construction. A high level of corrosion resistance is provided -both the chassis frame and cab frame are hot dip galvanised, while extensive use is made of aluminium and galvanised panels.

The Land Rover 6 x 6 has been developed by Land Rover Australia (a division of JRA Limited) with full support from Land Rover Limited. It is available through Land Rover's worldwide distributor network with full sales and service support.
