Lab a Fabulous Plan

As you may already know, Muskegon Community College is renovating the former Muskegon Chronicle buildings into an Applied Technology Center, helping develop a workforce with 21st Century skills. Existing manufacturing programs to be expanded are Machining, Welding, Materials/ Foundry, Electronics, CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and more. New programs housed in the facility will include Mechatronics/ Automation/ Robotics and Plastic Technologies. In addition, we heard from Dave Stradal, below, MCC Business Department chair and active member of Rotary’s ReWine Satellite Club, the Center will house a Fab

Lab, “a

place where students, businesses, and community members learn about entrepreneurship, take ideas from napkins to prototypes, engage in S.T.E.M. related activities, and learn from each other and experts along the way.” The following link contains more of Dave’s thoughts:

Salvation Army

SEASON PASS PIN Dear Rotarians, It’s that time of year again! The Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign is right around the corner! Our campaign is synonymous with the Holiday Season. The sound of those bells ringing acts as a proclamation that the Holiday Season is coming! With more and more people carrying credit and debit cards instead of cash, The Salvation Army of Muskegon County is introducing an easy, guilt-free way to bypass red kettles and still boost donations at Christmas. >>>

>>> The Season Pass Pin is a great alternative to digging for change every time you pass by a Salvation Army Red Kettle – offering a convenient, no-hassle way to support The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. The Season Pass Pins come in three denominations $20.00, $50.00 and $100.00. This is a wonderful and convenient way to give to The Salvation Army and show your support for your Muskegon Community! If you are interested in a Season Pass Pin, please contact Robin Henshaw at 231-773-3284 ext.107.

Blessings, Robin Henshaw Development Director Salvation Army of Muskegon

Last Rose of Summer

Always effervescent and never Photo: C Zahrt without her patented spirit of adventure, Chris Zahrt recently wanted one more plunge into Muskegon’s chilly lake water. In doing her dip, and after her shivering calmed down moments later, she told friends Summer 2016 was over; relegated to happy memories, cell phone pictures, and sundry summer souvenirs. Even so, various plans are already under way for next summer’s frivolities in Muskegon, some of which may just involve Chris in one way or another.

Farm to School:

Healthier Food

Choices

SPEAKERS: Colleen Johnson,

Poppy Hernandez and Dan

Gorman

by RIM Reporter

Robin Henshaw Dan Gorman, Food Service Director for the Whitehall District Schools and Montague Area Public Schools, and Colleen Johnson, Food Service Coordinator for the Muskegon Heights Public School Academy and Muskegon High School (supported by her associate Poppy Hernandez), spoke last meeting about the Farm to School program and how it is impacting the health of Muskegon County children. The program has been funded by grants on the federal, state and local level. The program is different at each school site, but the goal remains the same: Educate our children about healthy foods, and making healthy food choices. The Farm to School program relies on a “plethora” of community and business partners to accomplish the task of helping kids make healthier food choices. Community EnCompass McGrows Imitative, Community Foundation-Healthy Muskegon, Coalition for Community Development Healthy Heights, Muskegon Intermediate School District and the Career Tech Center are just a few. The goal is to collaborate with as many agencies, businesses, farmers, and individuals within the community to sustain this innovative approach to feeding our children. And the results show that it is working! Montague and Whitehall

Schools enjoy a thriving Farm to School program where the children have learned to plant, nurture, prepare and compost homegrown produce. The children take the fresh produce and create and prepare recipes for breakfast foods, which every child in the school enjoys. This is done every day of the week and all children participate. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and this program addresses hunger with a creative and healthy approach. School lunches have evolved as well, and are far healthier than the lunches we remember. Colleen Johnson states that, “Muskegon and Muskegon Heights Schools are facilitating basic introductions to healthy food.” Local farmers bring apples, rainbow carrots, pears and other fruits and vegetables to the school farmers’ market, where kids explore, taste and enjoy the experience of learning about locally grown produce. In fact, last week 3800 students participated in the Big Crunch, enjoying locally grown apples. The program has shown to increase awareness, attitude and attachment to healthy food among our children. And there is only one rule in the Farm to School program concerning children eating their lunches… the NO CRYING RULE. As long as there is no crying about

the food, then they coach the child to eat. As Johnson said, “We want healthy children, not healthy trash cans!” At our meeting’s conclusion, Colleen invited interested Rotarians for school breakfast,

lunch, snack, or early supper. Contact information for Colleen Johnson: 231-720-2807 or [email protected] t. If anyone would like to join students to eat, they may contact Colleen between 7am and 5pm on week days. She is at Muskegon Heights Academy and Muskegon High School.
