Dear Parents,

We have had a busy week this week; prep children have been preparing for their exams and to their

great credit, they have done so with good spirit. We started the week on Monday with an anti-

bullying assembly led by Mr Richards. He spoke about the importance of recognising that we are all

unique individuals with different opinions and different needs and the importance of kindness and

consideration in all our actions. He made the mistake of saying he had never baked a cake so his

challenge for the week ahead is to bake a cake and bring it into school!

On Wednesday evening we had our first musical soirée of the year and what a joy it was! The

children delighted us with exceptional performances and everyone left at the end of the evening

with a spring in their step! On Thursday senior pupils went to Lancing College to watch the musical

production of Guys and Dolls. This was a truly wonderful piece of live theatre and they returned to

school very excited and inspired. Today (Friday), we had our second visit from Portals to the Past

who captivated Year 4 with an ancient Greek workshop. The children learnt so much by engaging

practically in a range of exciting activities.

We have had many prospective parents touring the school in recent weeks and our Reception class

for next year is filling up quickly which is exciting!

Warm congratulations to Sophia B who took part in the Swimming Club Championships recently

and won the 50m backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle for the under nine category. We were very

pleased to present her with three large trophies in our celebration assembly this morning.

Congratulations also to Amelia G who has won four rosettes for riding.

Next week prep school children will complete this term’s exams and LPW clubs for pupils in years

6, 7 and 8 are cancelled, with the exception of senior art club, where the children have requested that

it runs. Outside clubs and homework room will run as usual. Please ensure that your son or

daughter has plenty of time for rest and fresh air at the weekend as well as revision. Their welfare is

important and some children can become very anxious in exam week. This will not enable them to

work to their full potential and can make the experience a miserable one. It is our aim that all our

children are able to feel a sense of achievement and accomplishment as a result of school exams and

learn for themselves where they can make improvements and where they have done well.

We are delighted to welcome Glendale Dance School in the evenings for an acrobatic dance class in

the gym which should be very exciting. It does mean however that we are locking the car park in

the evenings now to ensure that the space remains safe. I understand that some Wraparound Club

parents have been parking in the car park when they collect children at the end of the day and I am

sorry that this will no longer be possible.

Preparatory School at Worthing

Butterfly Conservation

Sussex Branch and the South Downs National Park Authority have applied for a grant with the

Tesco's Bags of Help Scheme as partners in a project which would see 550 Dutch elm disease-

resistant elm trees planted within the grounds of Lancing College. The pro-

ject’s primary target is to secure and increase the local population of White-

letter Hairstreak which relies exclusively on elm; also to benefit would be the

Comma and various moth species. It will be possible to vote for the project

and towards its funding via the Tesco’s token scheme which is running from

now until the end of December 2017 at Tesco’s Holmbush or the Tesco ex-

press next to Buckingham Park. If you shop in Tesco, please help us to help

conserve these beautiful creatures.

Lost Property

We now have a lost property bin where all lost property will be placed from now on. This bin sits

under the arches opposite the water fountain. We are happy for parents looking for their child’s

missing uniform to access this bin from the waiting area in the playground when delivering or col-

lecting children. For safeguarding reasons we ask that parents do not go beyond the lost property

bin under the arches.

Letter from Sir Roger Bannister:

Dear Ms Bridges

Saturday's morning's post is usually rather dull... so what a surprise to me to read your lively,

interesting letters from your pupils. Perhaps one day your history teacher might show them a film

called "The Everest of the track" by a young film maker. It shows you how many people in Britain

were still rationed, food and other things that had been unavailable during the war. The climbing of

Everest by a New Zealander, news of which came on the day of the Queen's Coronation and the

four minute mile a year later, helped to cheer people up. I only ran two more races after the four

minute mile, one against John Landy, who by then had broken my record ( I won!) and the other

was the European 1500 metre championship ( which I also won).

I just loved history at school and all these years later, I still do.

You can learn how many people can overcome huge difficulties and still fashion an honourable and

decent life for themselves. My family ran with me every weekend and all of them love sports,

para-motoring, bicycling, sailing and many others. The best thing is to join clubs and make many

friends and enjoy keeping fit.

School Exams

Years 7 and 8

Year 7 and Year 8 will sit exams in the gym.

Year 7 will sit school exams which will test what your child has been taught in school.

Year 8 will sit mock CE/CAS exams

Year 7 and 8CE will largely follow the Common Entrance timetable of exams:

8SC will largely follow the Common Academic Scholarship timetable of exams:

Mental Maths tests and French speaking exams will take place during normal lessons before the

written exams. All dates for these exams will be on revision lists and/or written in homework dia-

ries. Teachers have prepared Revision Lists to help children to prepare and we would ask that you

encourage your child to use their homework time to revise following the guidelines given by their

teachers.

Year 7 parents will receive an Exam Report containing the results at the end of this term.

Year 8 exam results will be discussed at Year 8 Parents’ Evenings on either Monday 11th or

Wednesday 13th December. A letter giving details of how to book appointments for these evenings

will be in your child’s bag today. If you do not receive a copy, please ask the School Office. Pupils

will need at least two permanent navy blue pens, at least two pencils, a pencil sharpener, a rubber

and a ruler in a clear container and a reading book. They may need a calculator for Maths and

Science.

PREP INFORMATION

Years 5 and 6

Years 5 and 6 will be doing school exams during the week beginning 20th November. These will all

take place in normal lessons on the following days:

Mental Maths tests will take place during normal lessons before the written exams. Year 6 French

speaking tests will be next week and year 5 French speaking tests will be the week after exams. All

dates for these exams will be on revision lists and/or written in homework diaries.

School exams in Years 5 and 6 test what has been taught in school and teachers write revision lists to

help children to prepare. We would ask that you encourage your child to use their homework time

to revise following the guidelines given by their teachers. At the end of this term parents will re-

ceive an Exam Report containing the results.

Year 3 and year 4 School Assessments

Year 3 and Year 4 will have assessments in English and Maths during the week beginning 20th No-

vember as part of their normal lessons. We will prepare for these in class and will share the results

of them with you at the end of term via the Year 3/Year 4 Autumn Term Assessment Report. We

will reassure the children that the assessments are nothing to worry about, they are to help us to

plan their ‘next steps’.

Please note, pupils who are absent for exams/assessments will not be able to take them at a later

date.

Year 4 Greek Day with Portals To The Past

Portals to The Past came to spend the day with Year 4 to run a Ancient Greek workshop. The chil-

dren had a fantastic time trying Ancient Greek games, a quiz, trying on Greek armour and taking

part in a mini Olympics. The children were truly inspired about the topic with a hands on approach.

Thank you to the LPWA for subsidising this fantastic opportunity.

First Team v Shoreham College Won 8-2

The First Team bounced back from their first and only defeat last week with an emphatic display of

football to overpower a good Shoreham team. The boys played some excellent football on the floor,

and lead 6-1 at half time. A swap in players and positions allowed others to experience top First

team football; however, they were again too strong. Another superb display of football, with goals

coming from the captain Ozzy R as well as Charlie J, George C, Henry S and Joseph C. Player of

the match: Whole team

Under 9 v Pennthorpe School Red Team Lost 0-4

Under 9 v Pennthorpe School Blue Team Drew 1-1

The Year 3 and 4 boys started the first game very slowly, and hence conceded early goals.

However, they played with greater effort and were much more effective on the field of play.

This improvement continued in their second game, and took the lead through a well worked goal

form Seb G after a cross from Oliver S. However, Pennthorpe scored a well taken goal in the last

minute of the game to draw level. A much improved performance a deserved result. Well done to

all those boys who played. Player of the match: Thomas S

Under 4 team v Shoreham College Won 2-1

The Year 4 played some fantastic football on Thursday afternoon, and deserved the hard fought

win. Two super goals from player of the match Oliver S ensured victory. I was really pleased with

what they had learnt from their defeat on Tuesday against Pennthorpe School—they made huge

improvements in all aspects of their game. Really well done boys!

Under 3 Team v Shoreham College Won 2-1

The Year 3 team worked very hard throughout the game, which could have gone either way.

Player of the match Joshua made some fine saves, and with Seb G scoring two goals, the Year 3

boys ran out winners. A fantastic team performance. Well done!

The Colts teams v Shoreham College at home on Wednesday

Both teams played extremely well. The red team won 4-2 with two goals from Riley T, one from

Dom F and another from Marley R. It was a great performance with lots of attacking at both ends.

The boys weren’t distracted by lots of substitutions being made throughout the game. Louis R-B

was picked out as player of the match for his amazing goalkeeping performance. The opposing PE

teacher called him “Manuel Neuer” (possibly the best goalkeeper in the world right now!)

SPORT INFORMATION

As for the blue team, they drew 1-1. There were some really encouraging performances. The boys

have clearly learnt from their past experiences and had great unity as a team. Brandon L played in

goal in the first half and made some good saves, despite this not being his usual position. Isaac R,

Eddie B and Harry R played very well in defence. Lewis B played well on the left wing and in goal

in the second half. Oliver S led the team well as captain and put in a good midfield display. Jack S

put in the best performance I have seen from him since joining LPW. He was a constant threat down

the right-hand side with the runs that he made with the ball and the crosses he made into the

penalty area. Albert M scored LPW’s goal with a great finish into the bottom corner. LPW’s player

of the match was Jack S for his excellent performance.

The under 9s blue team played against Pennthorpe at home in a triangular series of games on

Tuesday. In the first game, LPW put up a good fight but lost 1-0. Joshua H had a marvellous

performance in goal, making a great save with his right foot to stop Pennthorpe from getting a

second goal. LPW were unlucky not to score when the Pennthorpe keeper made a good save with

his feet from an Illyas M effort. Player of the match was Illyas M for his desire to get stuck-in and

determination to win the ball.

In the second game, LPW were defeated 3-0 by Pennthorpe. LPW were forced to do plenty of

defending in this game which they did extremely well. Logan T and Zen R showed the biggest

hunger to get the ball forwards out of the LPW half. Despite the scoreline, LPW showed an

improvement from the first game because they listened to Mr Payne and tried to get the ball wider

and spread out more so that they didn't gather around the ball. Zen R was player of the match for

sheer effort in the second game.

U11 training game at Farlington

U11 game turned into a training game due to some girls being absent. They mixed up with the

Farlington girls and played a match. The girls improved their skills; they thought about their

positioning and how to accurately pass the ball. They also had to think about using and creating

space—a great experience for the girls.

U10 v Farlington Lost 1-6

The U10 girls had a tough game against Farlington. During the first half, they did lots of defending

and struggled to attack. We had to dig deep and stick tight to our opponents. In the second half we

did much better. We used the space more and we were able to have a few chances on goal and

eventually scored a great goal right at the end. Thank you to the parents who came to support us.

Girls Hockey U13/12 v Handcross Park School - Lost 0 - 4

As we were down a player, Handcross Park kindly lent us a few players, which also

meant all girls from both schools played the whole match. It was a tiring but fast paced

game. After a shaky start the girls came back stronger in the second half after a positive

talk from Joe Naughtly, Head of Hockey at Lancing College. The girls are developing

their game by using the wings more with greater effect. Well done girls. Thank you to

those parents who were able to attend. Girl of the game: Barney.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Sophia B who took part in her swimming club championships a few

weeks ago and raced in 50m backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle. She won all three

in the under 9s category and was presented with her medals and trophies at the weekend.

night run so smoothly. Also, special thanks to Nikki from the Kitchen for her lovely Mulled

Wine and Pumpkin Soup.

Christmas Fair – Friday 1st December 5:30pm – 7:30pm (Sponsored by Howdens Joinery)

The Christmas Fair is just 2 weeks away and preparations are well underway.

Come and join us for which promises to be a fun and festive evening. Enjoy a mince pie with

some mulled wine, while the children visit our Santa’s Grotto and enjoy the fun and games on

offer with lots of chances to win a prize. Then why not take a walk around our ‘Christmas Mar-

ket’ which will be located in the gym, where local businesses will be selling a wide range of

Christmas Fayre.

We have three top prizes for the raffle this year as well as many others.

1st Prize – HP Laptop including Office 365

2nd Prize – Amazon Echo

3rd Prize – A Drone

Do you have a possible raffle prize you would like to donate? If so, please get in touch.

Raffle tickets will be sent home with the children shortly. Please return Counterfoils, monies

and any unused tickets to the office by 30th November.

We will be having our traditional Sweet Tombola but with bags this year instead of Jam Jars.

Sweet bags will be sent home for your child to fill and decorate. Please return them to the

office by Thursday 30th November.

DONATION REQUESTS - If anyone has any unused/unwanted children’s gifts to donate for

the children’s Christmas tombola stall, please could these be taken to the office.

We will also be having a “wrap a gift” stall, if anyone could donate a small box of chocolates

(unopened and in date) or any unused and unwanted small gifts for the children to purchase at

pocket money prices that would be wonderful.

Santa’s Grotto – Any help with the setup of the grotto on the afternoon of the 1st December

will be gratefully received.

HOLIDAY CLUB CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY

To assist with the planning and staffing of Holiday Club over the Christmas Holidays it would be

helpful if I could have an indication of the number of children who may be attending. Could par-

ents who may wish to utilise the Holiday Club over this period, please complete the form below

and return it to the School Office by Friday 24 November. If you are not sure of your plans, please

still return the slip stating this and indicating the days you may require. If there is insufficient de-

mand, we may not run some sessions. Please note this is not an actual booking – it is just to give me
