how to apply tuff-cut Vinyl decals:

1. Lay the decal flat, with the pre-mask surface down. Slowly remove the liner from the pre-mask and vinyl, pulling straight back and flat (not at an angle).

2. Place the adhesive surface of the decal in the desired location, then press or rub the pre-mask surface using overlapping strokes.

3. Once the vinyl is completely adhered in position, slowly pull away the pre-mask at an angle.

44 | Stocks and adhesives

available Stock typesplease request a sample for testing in any application not specifically recommended.

White Gloss: For a lustrous appearance. Used when it is not necessary to write or type on the label.

White Matte: Excellent for labels to be written on or typed on. Correctability may be limited on some typewriters.

White Edp Gloss: Gives the same lustrous appearance as White Gloss, but is designed for use with typewriters and non-laser computer printers. Correctability may be limited on some typewriters.

White Edp Smudgeproof: A porous, absorbent stock designed for excellent printability and the smudge resistance necessary in non-laser electronic data processing and high-speed imprinting. Not recommended for screens or fine-detailed graphics.

Fluorescent: A bright Dayglo™ matte paper available in red, orange, chartreuse, pink, green, blue and purple. Printing in black ink is recommended.

Foil: Provides a metallic appearance. Available shiny and dull in gold and silver.

White Vinyl: Durable, weather-resistant and can be used indoors or outdoors as well as in some harsh environments.

clear Vinyl: A durable and weather-resistant material that appears nearly clear when applied. We recommend printing white ink behind the image area for greater readability. Adhesive is available on either the front (face) or the back, depending on the viewing direction.

clear polypropylene: A 2-mil clear film stock.

Static cling Vinyl: This Clear or White Vinyl has a static charge that allows it to stick without adhesive to most smooth, clean surfaces such as glass, plastic or baked-enamel finishes. Leaves the surface clean when removed or repositioned. Clear Static Cling stock is available with static on the front (face) or back. White Static Cling stock is available with static on the back.

polyester: A highly durable synthetic film used primarily for outdoor applications involving high levels of abrasion or abuse. Polyester will stand up longer in a moist environment and is resistant to most oils and solvents. For added durability we laminate some polyester decals at no additional charge. Available in white, silver and gold.

thermal: Thermal Transfer and Direct Thermal stocks are guaranteed to be compatible with leading printers and scales. Stock activates at 185°F. The ultra-smooth surface and special adhesives allow excellent scanning and instant adherence to corrugated boxes and shrink-wrap film.

piggyback: These labels are on two liners so the top label can be removed and re-applied to another surface. Piggyback labels are available in blanks for peel-off address labels or custom-printed. Ask for details and prices.Alsoavailableinthepopular“IRSsize”.

laser and inkjet: For laser and inkjet printers. A wide variety of stocks are available. See pages 30-31.

tag: Non-pressure-sensitive in a variety of stocks from polystyrene and thermal transfer to paper and HDPE.

Environment MattersIf your label or decal needs to perform where it is damp, cold, hot, abrasive or exposed to chemicals and solvents, please let us know.

adhesives at WorkSome surfaces such as wood, silk and suede may be damaged by any adhesive. request a sample label to test before applying.

permanent adhesive is supplied unless you request otherwise. This is a general purpose adhesive appropriate for most applications.

removable adhesive will allow the label to be taken off once it is applied without leaving pieces of the label behind. Note, however, that a label will become permanent over time or with exposure to weather.

ultra-removable adhesive is an excellent alternative to static cling. It adheres better than static and removes just as easily. Available in both white and clear polypropylene.

removable and repositionable adhesive (pressabels) allows the label to be removed and reapplied with no residue on a wide variety of surfaces. This adhesive will remain temporary throughout its product life. This product is not recommended for use on fabrics.

Wide-temperature adhesive is designed to stick in very cold (to -65°F) and very hot (to 150°F) temperatures. This adhesive becomes permanent after 24 hours and will adhere to vinyl surfaces.

opaque adhesive obscures the application surface so itdoesn’t“showthrough”thelabelstock.Thisisusefulif you are using a label to cover erroneous or outdated information, or if the surface color could affect the appearance of the label. The opaque adhesive might slightly affect the appearance of ink color and requested color matches.


White ink Backup If your labels will be printed on clear stock, we recommend printing a white backup ink to increase readability. We offer this free of charge. There are three ways we can print the backup ink:

1. Halo around the image area — white will show slightly.

2. Full background on the entire label.

3. Partial background behind the image area only so the white will not show (not available for small type, behind white printing, or detailed artwork).

protective coatingsa protective coating is recommended if your labels will be exposed to chemicals, abrasion, moisture, freezing temperatures, or frequent handling.

Protective coatings do not provide protection from color fading caused by prolonged exposure to the sun, and will not make a paper or foil stock more durable if it is used outdoors.

Specialty inksScented inks help create an unforgettable image using encapsulatedfragrancesto“scratch‘nsniff.”Standardscents include rose, lemon, lavender, strawberry and vanilla. Many other scents are available.

Glitter inks add sparkle to enhance the label design. Several glitter effects are available.

uV inks provide strong, vibrant colors, superior print quality and consistency, particularly on films. Also holds very small and reverse type.

Scratch-off inks can be added to label stocks, tag and postcards.

Extended-life Fade-resistant inks are ideal for decals designed for prolonged outdoor use.

types of protective coatingsVarnish is an inexpensive coating that is applied during the printing process. Varnish provides limited protection from cracking, peeling and flaking that can occur with frequently handled labels. Also provides protection in refrigerator and freezer environments.

uV clear coat is a coating that is applied after the labels are printed and before they are die-cut. This coating gives labels a hard, semi-gloss finish which resists fingerprinting, abrasion, light surface moisture and

exposure to chemicals and solvents. UV Coating will not prevent fading, and will not make a paper or foil label more durable in outdoor or harsh conditions.

lamination is a premium protective coating where a poly film is fused to the labels after they are printed and the ink is dry. Lamination offers the best resistance to handling, chemicals and scratches or abrasion. Lamination will not prevent fading.

There are four ways copy can be oriented on a roll. If you are using the labels with an automatic label applicator, the way the label is oriented on the roll is very important.

You can specify how you want your copy or art to be positioned on the label relative to the loose end of the roll or to the sides of the roll.
