Welcome to Spot On’s Autumn 2017 tour

This season we’re really excited to bring a whole host of enticing stories to Lancashire. From the timeless and treasured fables of India to the remarkable women who served in the Great War. From a Wuthering classic to a comic take on Jane Austen, there’s even a trip to Cape Wrath in a minibus.

Weaving in amongst the storytellers are international musicians, home-grown poets, dancers, puppets and a Grande Lady… she’s 15 feet tall and 8 feet wide! So book your tickets now and be part of our story this Autumn.

All of our events are made possible by the fabulous volunteers and librarians across the county who work hard to make these activities happen. Our promoters work so hard because they love live arts events, and in turn they provide work for professional companies and support their local economy. This great art is possible due to government investment in the arts via the Arts Council England, and additional financial support from Lancashire County Council and five Local Authorities.

Please visit our website for more details about the shows, tourist information, directions and venue details. If you value the arts in your community and want to help keep them there, or you’re a fan of Spot On and often visit rural Lancashire, please tell us. Below there are six different ways to do this.

If your venue is not yet on our map, call Spot On 01254 660360 to find out how you can host a show. Call us too if you want future brochures sent direct to your door or want to join our mailing list.

Mashi TheatreTales of Birbal

Grannylocks / The Monstrous DucklingJoin performance poet Joseph Coelho, winner of the 2015 Centre for Literacy in Primary Poetry Award, as he unravels familiar fairytales to create fresh contemporary classics in an enchanting performance. A father returns home with a magical cloak. A cloak that hides a story... Did you know that the ugly duckling was never ugly? He was truly monstrous! Or that Goldilocks was never a tale about a little girl. It was always a tale about a granny - a mean, thieving granny who has plans for something quite nasty. Join our poetic storyteller as he unwinds the true stories behind the happily ever afters and discover they’re maybe not as charming as you remember!

‘Tomato / Tomato’ is not your garden variety duo. Clever quirky songs draw on folk and bluegrass. An old washboard; rigged up with tin cans and a cymbal rattles, while bass and snare drums are foot powered. Keira MartinHere Comes Trouble

Third AngelCape Wrath

‘Here Comes Trouble’ is a rigorous personal investigation into womanhood and Keira’s individual identity. Through a series of robust episodes drawing on social and cultural influences from Yorkshire, Ireland and Jamaica, Keira rhythmically weaves together traditional music, authentic song and gutsy dance. She shares hard hitting and heart-warming chapters of her life to courageously address stereotypes and challenge labels. Witness her build bridges and burn them again, each time revealing a deeper layer of herself and her heritage. This feisty yet vulnerable performance is entertaining and demonstrates the power and elegance of women in a very real and honest way.

“After he retired, my Grandad went on a trip from the Midlands up to Cape Wrath, the most northwesterly point of his native Scotland. He sat, looked at the sea, and thought about his life. Then he got up and went home. Over 20 years later, I got on a coach and followed in his footsteps. This is what I learned.” Third Angel presents a story of family, of fellow travellers, of whisky and chocolate, of the longest bus journey in Britain. Told to an audience of just 14 in a minibus. Heartfelt, moving, compellingly intimate, “Cape Wrath” takes you on a journey to the edge of the island.

She is fifteen feet tall and eight feet wide and has arrived to tell a magical story which emerges act by act from the little theatre that opens up within her skirts. The wondrous Christmas tale unfolds with the actors below performing acrobatic feats, globe walking on snowballs, china plate spinning, musical saw playing, hat juggling and more as the Grande Dame takes on the roles of a snow queen and Mother Christmas herself.

Spot On Libraries

In Spring our work in partnership with the county’s libraries resulted in 12 of our 16 events selling out!

We are so pleased to hear such great feedback from you about this project. Please bring your friends to our autumn shows, make every event a full house and don’t forget to tell us what you think. We do listen and the librarians we work with love to see everyone enjoying themselves.

We saw Elsa Jean McTaggart enchant audiences and in the process discovered a library with perfect acoustics for live music. The Churchfitters, over from France, were a delight, and the Fitzgerald Family Band, from Ontario went down a storm proving you can get 4 national stepdance champions into a library and not harm anyone on the front row. For families and children, Dommy B’s Wolf! was suitably scary, and the messy and joyful Dough! left its mark.

A chocolate/health bar prize for the first audience member to tell us what kingdom Elsa Jean McTaggart lives in.

Spot On Rural

We had a great spring season in rural Lancashire, with more than half our shows selling out. Can you help us get even more full houses this season?

Say hello if you are new to the network, we love to meet our audiences. Half our audiences were new to Spot On this season. 96% of our audiences also thought the show they had seen was excellent or very good. Three of our audience members wished they had stayed at home- sorry if it wasn’t to your taste but this gives us room for improvement. We began and ended our rural season with shows about

food. Ragged Edge Productions sold out 5 shows in a row with Chef Show- and Halton Mill topped out the season with a single serving of Reckless Sleepers’ Last Supper. Our international partnership across the Atlantic continued with the excellent Montreal Guitar Trio and Les Bordeliques. No food, but plenty of good art to digest.

Free chocolate/health bar in the post to the first audience member who knows in which show the character “fishchipsandpeas” appeared. Get in touch via facebook or email [email protected]
