Executive Meeting Report — May 2015

Carol Darou thanked Marie Amyot for hosting this meeting. President (Carol Darou) - year end reports will be placed in a binder for members to read at the June meeting. After discussion it was agreed that the sign-in book at meetings will be made available at break for anyone who missed signing in and wishes to do so. Vice President (Marilyn Robinson) - advised who is hosting June’s Executive meeting. She also advised that she went to the Guelph Quilt Show which had over 200 quilts shows; however, there were only five vendors attending. Treasurer (Janice Spitz) - the Treasurer’s Report was reviewed and approved. Block of the Month (Cathy Price) - this year’s Block of the Month is finished. Library (Marie Amyot) - showed the books for the library this month. Membership (Muriel Hopper) - in Muriel’s absence, Carol advised that Rosemarie Alarie is handling the Membership table this month; the membership forms are in members’ folders or will be emailed with their May newsletter. Janice Spitz advised that she has the 10 year pins that Muriel ordered for Carol to distribute. Newsletter (Lynne Green) - there are 96 members now receiving their newsletter by email; this is 49 more than last year and more than half of this year’s membership. Outreach (Anna Cornel) - mentioned that the Hospital Foundation will have the raffle quilt at QOTT.

Program (Alexis Mongeau) - advised that everything is ready for the Challenge. Alexis gave an overview of what trunk shows and workshops are being arranged for next year. Publicity (Arlene Pellett) - Carol advised that the poster for our AGM has been done and the information also given to the radio station. Social (Barb Dodds) - advised that all is going well.

April 2015 Meeting Review

There were 102 members and 5 visitors attending our April meeting, for a total of 107 people. One door prize was donated anonymously, and won by Joy Price. As usual, our Show and Tell included inspiring work, including several from Anna Cornel’s class High Tech Tucks. Our Vice President, Marilyn Robinson, chaired the meeting in Carol Darou’s absence due to illness. Marilyn announced that it is difficult getting help with the Show and Tell items, so in future when Barb Dodds phones people each month for treats for our meetings, she will also be asking for volunteers to help with Show and Tell. Jean Sherwin showed the finished 200th Anniversary Quilt. The label on the back includes all the names of people who did blocks for the quilt, as well as noting that it was hand quilted by the Needlepushers from MERA. The quilt will be on show at QOTT in August. Heather Buchan advised that there are four or five kits still available for the Lombardy Fair Quilt Block competition. Berkeley Butler went over the Registration procedure for entering quilts in QOTT (which was also included in April’s newsletter). She encouraged members to enter their finished items even if they are new quilters. Alexis Mongeau advised that the last workshop for this year is Al Côté’s Quilted Rugs on May 6. Our 25th Anniversary Challenge is being held at our May meeting. All Doorway entries need an artist statement, but do not

include your name. Drop off your entry between 3:00-5:00 pm on May 26 at the Lions Hall.

Library

The Quilt Block Bible, 200+ traditionally inspired blocks from Rosemary Youngs has a CD with patterns for 6” x 6” blocks that are divided into eight groups: stars, pinwheels and windmills, four-patch blocks, nine-patch blocks, blocks with curves, blocks on point, square-in-a-square blocks, and X blocks. Combine the blocks of your choice to make a range of quilt projects.

Learn to Quilt with Panels by Carolyn S. Vagst, editor of Quilter's World, offers many possibilities for designing unique quilts using either whole panels or panels cut into smaller units. There is also a chapter on using cheater fabrics as panels.

Classic Four-Block Applique Quilts by Gwen Marston is her

eighteenth book. The book includes the history of four-block quilts, full-size patterns for five projects, and a gallery of four-block quilts made by Gwen and her friends and students, as well as quilts from her collection and from museums.

More Elm Creek Quilts by Jennifer Chiaverini has patterns for eleven traditional quilts inspired by her best-selling novels. Excerpts and character sketches are included for The Sugar

Camp Quilt, The Christmas Quilt, Circle of Quilters, The Quilter's Homecoming, and The New Year's Quilt.

The Sugar Camp Quilt by Jennifer Chiaverini is now in the new Quilt Fiction library bin. ~ Marie ~

Newsletter Deadline

The deadline for June newsletter articles is June 11. ~ Lynne ~

Did you know?

This month’s “F” word ideas for completing your UFOs (by Pamela J. Durant in QNM September 2006):

Size it down. Allow yourself to stop where you are. Add wide borders, or instead of making a queen-sized quilt, make it lap- or even crib-size.

Trade projects with a friend. The thing that was stopping you - such as ripping out that long border you’ve sewn on wrong 3 times - might not bother someone else as much

as it does you.

Your tips, hints or general news are needed for this section or elsewhere in the newsletter, so please email or give them to Lynne Green. Thanks.
