    TheLamppost

As the year winds down, there are several things I want to bring to yourattention:

Earthquake Preparedness : To supplement the earthquake preparation ourschool has undertaken, I recommend that each LeConte family keep the followingitems in your childs backpack: your own contact information, emergency contactinformation (friends or relatives both in California and out of state), a familyphotograph, and perhaps a personal note to your child. You could also considerkeeping a light sweater in the backpack at all times. Please note that each classroomhas a first aid kit and supplies and we have a large container fully stocked withemergency equipment that is located at the rear of our playground area. All staff members know how to access the emergency supplies. Please let us know if your

phone number changes; this information must remain current should your childneed you in an emergency situation.

Next Years Kindergartens: Our projected enrollment for next year is317 students. For Kindergarten, we expect to have one Two Way Immersion classand two English classes. We are still seeking more Spanish speaking students forthe kindergarten Two Way Immersion. If you know of any families who would beinterested and live in our district, please ask them to contact me as soon as possible.

Health & Nutrition: One of the main reasons our school offers Farm,Garden, and Cooking classes is to help students learn to make healthy food choicesthat are low in sugar, fat, salt, and calories. We encourage them to make choicesthat limit their chances of getting diabetes and gaining excess weight. Therefore, wedo not allow students to bring candy, chips, or sodas to school. Please support ourefforts and do not pack these items for lunch or after school snacks.

Positive Behavior Support (PBS): Along with at least seven other BUSDschools, LeConte is implementing PBS, a program that helps teachers and studentslearn better strategies to address discipline concerns. This is our first year of implementation. PBS developers also recommend a supplemental curriculum,Second Step , which teaches students empathy, impulse control, problem solving, and anger management. We plan to purchase Second Step this year so that we canreview the program and develop a plan for implementation to begin in all classroomin September 2010.

School Site Plan : Every year schools are required to develop a School SitePlan for the upcoming year. Our School Governance Council (SGC) is responsible

for helping to develop and approve the plan. I will be submitting a first draft of theplan at the SGC meeting on Wednesday, April 7, 6:30PM in the library. I wouldlike to hear your ideas and suggestions about how we might improve achievementwhile meeting the needs of all students. The final draft is due Friday, April 30 th.You can offer your feedback during the meeting on April 7 or send me an email atcheryl_wilson@ Berkeley.k12.ca.us.

    LECONTE LEADERSHIP COMMITTEES

English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC)The committee is currently planning events to celebrate our third annual Da de los Nios (Day of theChild). Activities may include a day of making crafts, a performance by members of our ELACcommittee and a finale on Friday, April 30 th. The group is still finalizing arrangements and will contactother committee members and family to provide assistance. The next ELAC meeting will be Thursday,April 22, 5:00PM in Room 101 (childcare and dinner provided).

PTA General MeetingThe next PTA meeting will be Wednesday, April 20, in our cafeteria. Dinner will be served at 5:45PMfollowed by the meeting at 6:00PM. The focus of this months meeting will be discussing ways you canhelp your child prepare for the California standards test (CST).

School Governance Council (SGC)The next meeting will be Wednesday, April 7, LeConte library, at 6:30PM. Most of last monthsmeeting was devoted to discussing results from the LeConte Survey, the 2010-11 budget, and alternativesto helping students develop social skills to diminish concerns about inappropriate behavior. At least 59%of our families completed the survey. Some of the major areas identified by parents as needingimprovement are discipline, restroom/school cleanliness, safety and security, not enough time to eat

lunch, and bullying. Our schools 2010-2011 preliminary budget, as outlined by our district office, isabout $8900 less than last year. Therefore, PTAs funds will definitely be needed to subsidize the cost of noon supervisors, tutors, and field trips. Suggested budget allocations will be finalized by the end of thismonth. Our fifth grade teachers, Ms. Blanchard and Mr. Argueta, are supporting a grant proposal thatwould fund a full-time case manager who would support, monitor, and provide resources for students whoneed mental health and/or social skills development to achieve in school. The committee is consideringdiscontinuing the fifth grade Mosaic field trip in order to support other school needs. The Mosaic Projectis a five-day outdoor camp designed to help students understand and develop conflict resolution skills.

Although it is an excellent program, the long-term value of the program for our students is unclear. Giventhe budget shortages, the committee may choose to redirect those funds to other needs. There was no finaldecision about continuing Mosaic; this will be discussed with other stakeholders and committees.

Steps to Improve AchievementPrincipal Wilson met with all teachers to discuss the progress of their focus students (students who arestruggling with meeting grade-level standards and/or need more challenging work). Teachers reportedthat most of these students have shown improvement, though some may still be working below gradelevel. Several teachers felt progress was hindered because so many students arrive late. They need

families to get their children to school on time. Some students are missing 20 to 30 minutes of readingand language arts instruction every day. This not only affects their ability to learn the expected materialbut also negatively impacts their feelings of success in the classroom setting. As a result of the meetings, teachers are now going to explicitly help students develop, discuss, and monitor their own learning byhaving students record specific academic goals, e.g., writing a level 4 paragraph, complete sentences, etc.Principal Wilson strongly believes that students should be taught how and what it takes to achieve agoal/success and that all students have the ability to get smarter through effort. If students know and areheld accountable for improving specific areas then they have a greater chance of understanding that they

have control over their progress. You can help by asking your child about her/his goal. In addition, allstudents should be able to tell you one or two things learned during the day. Making learning standardsexplicit and clear to students is required of teachers to promote student engagement and accountability.

Lost & Found Clean Out on May 1If you think your child may be missing a sweatshirt, jacket, or other item, please check the Lost & Foundsoon. Items in Lost & Found are scheduled to be donated to a shelter on May 1. Please remember tolabel your childs coats and sweatshirts using laundry-safe markers or iron-on name labels (availableonline).

LeConte Students Are Enhancing Learning With Free Educational SoftwareWe encourage you to have your child support their learning after school or on weekends through theCompass Learning educational software, provided free by the District. It is easy to access from home orschool. We are very pleased by the number of students who are already utilizing this program to makethemselves smarter, as Principal Wilson says. This software is aligned with state and national standardsand provides a stimulating (and fun!), customized learning environment for each child. CompassLearning is at www.childu.com. To get your child started, you will need your childs user name andpassword. Most user names and passwords follow the following standard format: User Name :LeCFirstNameLastInitial. Password : FirstInitialLastInitial School : BUSD For example, John Smith hasa user name of LeCJohnS and a password of js. Contact August Fern at [email protected] if you arehaving difficulties logging in or would like to set up a parent account to monitor your student's progress.
