• The season is soon to be Christmas a national toy retail outlet has asked you to help them make a festive lamp/light for sale in their stores.
• They would like the light to be eye-catching and it’s design is to be in tune with the time of year.
• The product must be small and competitively priced.
• It must be recyclable (at least 80%)
Task 2: Lamp WHS Technology Department 4
BRIEF
• I will design and make a novelty lamp/light to meet the requirements of my client and his/her customers.
• The product will be eye catching and appeal to all ages.
• The product will reflect a Christmas theme.• The product will be made mostly from Acrylic.

INFORMATION SHEET
on PLASTICSThis Information can be found
By following the link below. You will have to scroll through the document but there is an index.
This document is very useful for the whole of the Design and Manufacture course.

Plastic Methods of Manufacture/Processes
• Below are two shortcuts to read!• Shortcut 1 is about processes used to
manufacture plastic items.• Shortcut 2 is more information on plastics and
their uses in industry.

Function/Performance: Electrical Components and Circuits
Task 2: Lamp WHS Technology Department 10
Activity 1 Design Outcome 2.1 (T2A1D2.1)
This is the First activity for this you need to produce:
– a range of ideas for components or parts of the lampALSO– You must consider what components will be required– You can produce your ideas on more than one sheet
SHOW ON THE LAST INITIAL IDEAS SHEET YOUR ‘FINAL IDEA’IMPORTANT
The Lamp must be made of no less than two parts (one must be made in plastic) and include the battery LED circuit and some way
to hold it in place.
The sheet following gives some examples of an Initial Ideas Sheet (not for the ‘Lamp’!)Success Guide – Craft and Design ‘Image Boards and Initial Ideas’ Pages 18-19

Activity 2 Design Outcome 2.1 Materials and Manufacture 1.2,1.5 (T2A2D2.1MM1.2,1.5)
• This is the Second activity for this product.• In this activity you must:
– Illustrate your sketches to show details, including how the lamp will be assembled (put together)
– Think about the information that has to be communicated and the best way to show it
IMPORTANTThis task will require you to communicate information on the materials that you are using such as sizes, properties, cost, manufacturing colours and anything else you think is relevant.

Activity 3 Design Outcome 2.1 Materials and Manufacture 4.2 (T2A3D2.1MM3.1,4.2)
• This is the Third activity. In this activity you will:– Create a model to support your design thinking and decisions– Think about what materials are best suited to manufacture
the model so that it will closely resemble your design– Write an Evaluation of the model to say how well the model
works (see sheet after Model Making)
In this activity make your model full size, remember you are trying to evaluate your design by modelling a physical representation of it.
Task 2: Lamp WHS Technology Department 18
MODEL MAKINGhttp://www.technologystudent.com/prddes1/model1.html
TO MAKE A MODEL YOU CAN USE ALL SORTS OF MATERIALS. THE MATERIALS CHOSEN SHOULD BE SIMILAR TO THE PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIAL YOU WILL MAKE THE PROTOTYPE FROM. THE DIMENSIONS OF THE MODEL SHOULD NOT BE ‘MADE TO SCALE’ UNLESS THE FINAL PROTOTYPE IS VERY LARGE. IN THESE EXAMPLES THE CHAIR IS MADE TO SCALE BUT THE SHAVER IS FULL SIZE.

Activity 4 Materials and Manufacture 3.3,3.4,3.5 (T2A4MM3.1,3.3,3.4,3.5)
• This is the Fourth activity. In this activity you will:– Produce manufacturing plans which incorporate requirements for tools, equipment,
materials and fixings, as well as manufacturing techniques and processes. Using what you have learnt and thought about while making your prototype produce a
‘Method of Manufacture’ sheet for the making of the final prototype - look here for information
– http://www.technologystudent.com/designpro/quality1.htm– Success Guide – ‘Craft and Design’ Planning for Manufacture pages 22-23
– THEN: Produce the Prototype– Manufacture your lamp prototype using your chosen materials and methods– Consider the most appropriate materials and the processes you will use to cut,
shape, form and join them

Activity 5 Materials and Manufacture Outcome 4.2,4.3,4.4 (T2A5MMO4.2,4.3,4.4)
This is the Fifth activity. In this activity you will:
– Evaluate your lamp prototype by:– Consider the aspects of your manufacturing which have been successful or could be
improved upon in terms of Craftship and Finish– Recommend changes in your design to show how the prototype could be commercially
manufactured – consider economy, efficiency and sustainability– You must also show that you have thought of the environmental issues in the production of
your product and how this is considered in a commercial setting– go to this web page for a way to write an evaluation http://www.technologystudent.com/designpro/eval1.htm
You will need to produce at least one sheet of work
