BACKGROUND INFORMATIONBACKGROUND INFORMATION

Sedikong sa Lerato is a community based organisation, established in 2005 due to escalating number of orphans and vulnerable children, and the scourge of HIV/AIDS in the local community of Tooseng.

Contact making process was applied, with the members of the community and conducted a needs analysis within Tooseng village,

Which led to the establishment of the drop-in centreFeeding scheme was developed to alleviate poverty in the village and assure that orphans

and vulnerable children are cared for and protected.

• The project officially launched in January 2006, and within a month there were over 300 supported children within the feeding programme.

• By the end of 2006, Sedikong had a full-blown organic vegetable garden producing vegetables to supplement the kitchen.

• In 2007, however, Sedikong secured a year’s funding from the Limpopo Department of Social Development,

• this offered Sedikong the opportunity to devise new ways of intervening in the lives of its children and in the community

Page 6: Lammangata Moringa -- the Seed of Community Wellness

• In 2008, Sedikong began planning and initiated the development of a project to cultivate the Moringa tree, the leaves of which can be considered as “super food” because of their astounding nutritious elements.

• Planning continued into 2009 until Sedikong launched the Lammangata Moringa project in March 2009, planting thousands of Moringa trees,

PROJECT INTRODUCTIONPROJECT INTRODUCTION

Lammangata Moringa is a community wellness and food security project, cultivating and utilizing Moringa Oleifera, The “Miracle Tree”, and a plant possessing remarkable nutritional properties. We cultivate and distribute Moringa seedlings to the most economically disadvantaged households in rural Limpopo communities, We produce and sell edible Moringa Leaf powder, and provide the community education in health and nutrition.Moringa Oleifera is indigenous to India but has naturalized in Southern Africa and is non-invasive. Moringa leaves are being utilized by countries all over Africa to stem malnutrition and hungerMoringa leaves are astoundingly nutritious and are easily added fresh or dried to traditional dishes.

•Lammangata Moringa is born out of the idea—endorsed by the World Health Organization—that personal nutrition is the foundational building block of development. • It is also responding to the global food crisis and the serious problem of food insecurity in southern Africa and aims to utilize locally available resources to meet the challenge. •Acknowledging that the problems of malnutrition and low diet diversity are linked to poverty and lack of education,•Lammangata offers Moringa Oleifera seedlings and nutritional education at no cost to rural communities in Limpopo province. • Being a subsidiary project of Sedikong sa Lerato Drop-in Centre, our Moringa leaves are added to the daily meals of the nearly 400 orphans and vulnerable children who benefit from our food and nutrition programme. •The immediate social impact of people consuming Moringa leaves is, naturally, the improvement of their health and a drastic increase in their ability to ward off illness, disease and infection.

Page 15: Lammangata Moringa -- the Seed of Community Wellness

For vulnerable children, it also means a more normal physical and mental development process. For pregnant and breast-feeding mothers, it means a healthier mother and baby.

For economically disadvantaged families, it means less money spent on expensive fruits and vegetables, and thus a financial burden lifted.

In this sense, Lammangata Moringa is addressing a fundamental aspect of poverty alleviation and development in both the short and long term,

with particular focus on assuring that vulnerable children get the nutrients they need to be healthy and develop properly.

Page 16: Lammangata Moringa -- the Seed of Community Wellness

1/27/2011 16

The dissemination of Moringa means a widespread improvement in the health of the community and a long-term investment in local food security,

all of which positively affects not only the mental and spiritual well-being of the people

their ability to work, earn an income, and improve their standard of living

Project AimsProject Aims

To serve as an income-generating project for Sedikong sa Lerato, for Sedikong to become self-sufficientTo make the highly-nutritious Moringa plant available to the residents of Tooseng and Ga-Mphahlele at an affordable cost, thereby alleviating hunger, illness, and malnutritionTo bring jobs and development to the community of ToosengTo provide South Africa with a substantive, local source of moringa (presently moringa can only be purchased from foreign sellers), and to offer an example to the general public of what can be done with the tree (currently there are no large-scale moringa projects, only small-scale growth on homesteads)

THE PROBLEM THE PROBLEM The Problems are poverty,

malnutrition and low diet diversity Most village families rarely consume

protein-rich meats and vitamin-rich vegetables.

Most children aren’t enjoying a diverse diet that provides the necessary vitamins, minerals, proteins and amino acids necessary for healthy physical and mental development.

Statistics show that Limpopo residents suffer considerably more from Vitamin A deficiency than do residents of other provinces in South Africa.

The most obvious effects of malnutrition are hunger, stunted growth, low energy, diarrhea, respiratory infections (like TB), and poor vision.

Page 19: Lammangata Moringa -- the Seed of Community Wellness

1/27/2011 19

• As residents of the village, all these effects are clearly visisble in Tooseng village

Page 20: Lammangata Moringa -- the Seed of Community Wellness

HOW IS LAMMANGATA HOW IS LAMMANGATA ADDRESSING THE PROBLEMADDRESSING THE PROBLEM

Lammangata Moringa aims to stem hunger and malnutrition by offering remarkable nutritional benefits of moringa oleifera, the “ miracle tree”, at zero or very low cost to the poorest of the poor in Tooseng community, across Ga-Mphahlele, and eventually to communities across Limpopo and South Africa

The leaves and seeds of Moringa Oleifera, dubbed by some to be the “Miracle Tree”, offer an almost unbelievable array of nutritional benefits and are safely consumed by humans.

Moringa leaves possess more vitamin C than oranges, more vitamin A than carrots, more iron than roast beef, and more protein than milk.

The tree is easily cultivated in semi-arid climates, grows quickly, and is not invasive.

• The nutritional value of moringa leaves is almost unbelievable.

• In addition to these nutrients, moringa provides all the essential amino

METHODOLOGIESMETHODOLOGIES

Organic growing of moringa oleifera trees, implies a process of planting and growing that is entirely natural

Free from unnatural chemical applicants, fertilizers and other man-made substances

Fertilizers are drawn from a composting process utilizing the local animal dung and pest control is natural

Challenges, Opportunities & Challenges, Opportunities & Lesson Learned Lesson Learned

•Our community has embraced Moringa beyond our expectations. •There has been zero resistance to the introduction of the tree. • Our method of community education was helpful—events led and directed by community members, offered in the local language, and carried out in local village style.•For the project to grow as planned we are appealing for financial leverage and support from the government, parastatals and corporate social investments.
