Why we choose “Lamb to the Slaughter”?

• Combination of irony, humour and real human psychology.

• Reveals the dark part of human being which never crossed in our sane minds.

• Eg: Soft and loyal wife had the gut to kill her own husband.

• It is a cunning way to kill someone and in the same time, it removes the alibi.

General View

Male and Female Roles

From this story, the writer portrays the image of a typical and stereotyping woman who was a happy

housewife who cooked the food, cleaned the house, while the husband worked to support the family.

This shows that the scenario of these both roles has been accepted by the society.

• Patrick Maloney played a role as the financial supporter of the family. He worked as a police officer meanwhile, Mary as a wife, she took care of the house and did all the house work while waiting for her husband to come back from work.

• Mary tried to be the best for her husband. For example, gave him her attention, care and tried to provide everything for her husband.

General View

Evidence from text “Now and again she glanced at the clock, but without anxiety, merely to please herself with the thought that each minute gone by made it nearer the time when he would come. There was a slow smiling air about her, and about everything she did. The drop of a head as she bent over her sewing was curiously tranquil her skin for this was her six month with child-had acquired a wonderful translucent, the mouth of soft and the eye with their were placid look, same larger and darker than before. When the clock said ten minutes to five, she began to listen and a few moment later punctually as always, she heard the tires on the gravel outside, and the car door slamming, the foot steps passing the window, the key turning in the lock. She laid aside her sewing, stood up, and went forward to kiss him as he came in.” (pg 15, para 3)

“She laid aside her sewing, ….. took his coat and hung it in the closet” (pg 15, para 3-6)

• In this text, we can see the differences of role of both genders which are men go to work while women stay at home and do housework.

• This scenario is socially accepted by the society. • It is known that each gender has its own duty in making a

balance and harmony marriage.

Society has accepted that man has the power to control any situation of the family. He is the person who

makes all the decision in the family while woman is the person who follows and agrees with it.

In the story, we can see that Patrick made it clear that he was going to leave her and there was no space for

discussion. In the other hand, Mary , being a loyal wife, did not say anything, in fact she just went back

doing her own work.

Evidence from Text“So there it is”, he added. “And I know it is kind of a bad time to be telling you, but there simply wasn’t any other way. Of course I’ll give you money and see you’re looked after. But there needn’t really be any fuss. I hope not anyway. It would not be very good for my job.”

“I’ll get the supper,” she managed to whisper, and this time he didn’t stop her.

It is socially accepted that men are the ones who make decision in a marriage while women are the ones who obey their husbands.

Feminism Cheris Kramarae,

“Feminism is the radical notion that women are human.”

In feminism, women are being oppressed in the patriarchal world. Women’s voice are not heard.

This leads to the existence of feminist movement.

“So there it is”, he added. “And I know it is kind of a bad time to be telling you, but there simply wasn’t any other way. Of course I’ll give you money and see you’re looked after. But there needn’t really be any fuss. I hope not anyway. It would not be very good for my job.”

In this story, the writer stressed the dominancy of male where they can make a decision without women’s interruption in marriage. The

reason is women are portrayed as having no value and have to obey their husbands no matter what happens.

From here, we can see that Patrick did not respect Mary and abused her verbally. He yelled at her despite that Mary was being nice and

polite towards him. Plus, he expected no reply from her.

In the feminism world, women are viewed as nothing, been treated without any respect and

verbal violence. They are considered as the weak and submissive ones.

• “Sit down”. (pg 16,para 17)• “For God’s sake!” (pg 17,para 12)

I think I can fit this pant just

fine..I know I’m not THAAAT BIG, am I?

I definitely look like

David Beckham’s

little brother.

In this story, we can see that the wife, Mary, was experiencing rejection which leaded her

to be in a denial state. This is because she loved her husband wholeheartedly but her

husband did not return the favour. When her husband decided to leave her, she became

extremely devastated.

Evidence from text“Her first instinct was not to believe any of it, to reject it all. It occurred to her that perhaps he hadn’t even spoken that she herself had imagined the whole thing. Maybe, if she went about her business and acted as though she hadn’t been listening, then later, when she sort of woke up again, she might find none of it had ever happened.” (page 17,para 7)

In this text, we can see that she was too shocked until she became numb (unconscious). That leaded her to distract herself by continuing doing her work which shows that she denied or cannot accept what Patrick said to her before.

“The violence of the crash, the noise, the small table overturning, helped to bring her out of the shock. She came out slowly, feeling cold and surprised and she stood for a few minutes, looking at the body, still holding the piece of meat tightly with both hands.”

(pg 18, para 1)

• In this text, it proves that her previous state (in an extreme shock) deviated her sanity and urged her to revenge. After she had her sanity back, she realised that what she did was wrong. Which leads her to do the well-planned scene to cover herself up.

• Her unconscious state leaded her to being in denial.
