Lightning safety tips: Take precautions after hearing thunderWith the large number of pop-up

storms in the summer months, knowingabout safety around lightning can saveyour life. In the United States an averageof 67 people are killed each year bylightning, but even with the unpre-dictable way that lightning strikes, usingsome precautions can help save lives.

Summer is the peak season for light-ning strikes and many urban myths sur-round this natural occurrence. Accordingto the National Weather Service, there isan average of 25 million flashes of light-ning from cloud to ground every year.

Warning signsThunderstorms can form quickly

without much warning. Start looking forlightning as soon as you hear the firstclap of thunder or when you notice a no-tice changes in cloud and wind patterns, indicating that a storm is building. Bycounting the seconds (one Mississippi, two Mississippi, etc.) from the time yousee the flash and hear the thunder youcan determine how far away the storm is.For every five seconds you count, thelightning is one mile away.

It is possible to be struck by lightningthat may seem far off. The National

Weather Service recommends that ifthunder is heard less than 30 secondsafter you see a lightning strike, you needto take cover. Certain types of lightningare created from very high clouds andcan strike with virtually no warning.

The sound of thunder is the best warn-ing signal that you need to take shelter.

Take shelterIf you’re boating or swimming, get

out of the water immediately and moveto a safe shelter away from the water. Ifyou’re outdoors, go to a safe shelter, suchas inside a sturdy building. Do NOTstand under a tree or in an open pavilion, but head to a safe, enclosed location, such as a bathhouse or restroom.

Getting into an enclosed car can pro-vide good protection. Avoid isolated trees

or other tall objects, bodies of water, sheds, fences, convertible automobiles, tractors and motorcycles. Lightning’selectrical charge can travel through theground after it strikes a tree or un-grounded structure.

If you feel your hair stand on end, squat with your head between yourknees. Do not lie flat. The objective is tominimize your body’s amount of groundcontact and to reduce your height. If yousee lightning and immediately hear thethunder, you need to seek shelter rightaway. This means that the thunderstormand lightning are directly overhead.

Safety firstThe safest place during lightning ac-

tivity is a large enclosed building, not apicnic shelter or shed. The second safestlocation is an enclosed metal vehicle, car, truck, van, etc., but NOT a convertible, bike or other topless or soft-top vehicle.

Each spark of lightning can reach overfive miles in length, soar to temperaturesof approximately 50,000 degrees Fahren-

Storms really are the same strengthSevere thunderstorm warnings for 60

mph winds, large hail, and intense light-ning have been the rule this spring andsummer. I cannot tell you how manyemails I receive daily asking why thestorms are getting so bad. The fact is, thestorms are the same intensity as they al-ways have been. It’s just that we have somany more people now living in northGeorgia to be affected by them.

There have been many days where wehave had more than 40 severe thunder-storm warnings. In Texas, that mightequate to three or four. In Dallas for ex-ample, the meteorologists are responsiblefor one or two counties. My forecast areacovers 89 counties, most of which are thesize of major U.S. cities. So, for a singlestorm moving across the north Georgiaarea, it may move over 10 counties, therefore we have 10 severe thunder-storm warnings. As I said, the storms arenot stronger or more numerous, they justaffect more people.

When I began forecasting for WSB in1982, we would maybe have one or twolightning fires a year. That was whengoing out from Atlanta to the suburbs, was going to Buckhead. Now our sub-

urbs reach all the way to Lake Lanier! Ihave not seen a day where we have an af-ternoon thunderstorm where we have notat least one lightning fire.

Large trees and tree limbs going downis another major concern. There are sev-eral factors to consider. We had five yearsof extreme drought. Many of our oldertrees could not handle that stress and areslowly rotting away.

In addition, the huge constructionboom of years gone by has also con-tributed to this problem. All the concretepromotes an immense amount of runoff, which has removed and loosened soilaround trees. Also, this time of year, treesare loaded with heavy vegetation, water, and sap, making them extremely top

About Allatoona: Lake Allatoona is the oldest multi-purpose project in the Corps'South Atlantic Division. Preliminary site work began in 1941 but was discontinuedby the outbreak of World War II. The dam was completed and placed into operationin January, 1950, at a cost of about $31.5 million. The lake is located on the EtowahRiver, a tributary of the Coosa River, about 30 miles north of Atlanta. The damimpounds run-off water from 1,110 square miles into a large, irregular lake. Duringperiods of heavy rainfall, excess runoff is stored to alleviate floods in the lowerEtowah Valley and to reduce flood heights at Rome, GA. During dry periods, storedwater is released to supplement runoff for power production and to produce streamflow. Because the lake serves a large drainage area and is relatively small, the levelof the lake may fluctuate greatly. Daily increases of three to four feet are not uncom-mon following heavy rains with an increase of 20 feet recorded in one week's timeseveral years ago.

Rules, Regulations and MoreGuidelines are not intended as restraints to the enjoyment of park visitors, but as

aids for orderly operation, visitor safety and for the protection of the environment andpublic property. Complete rules and regulations are posted at the entrances to allcampgrounds and copies are available at entry stations.

heavy. A wind gust of 40 mph, com-mon in an afternoon thunderstorm, isall it takes to topple the huge trees ortear off limbs.

As we move into the month of July,we can expect more ferocious after-noon thunderstorms. On a hot July day, rising air inside a storm can make itgrow to 50,000 feet. Up there, there ishail and rain mixing it up, create hugeamounts of static electricity. Air beingcooled by the rain and hail can movestraight down from the core of thestorm and slam into the ground at morethan 80 miles per hour. This is called amicroburst or downburst. It will be

very common for a July storm to pro-duce 60-70 mile per hour winds, golfball size hail, and intense cloud toground lightning. It is one of ourstormiest months of the year. The onegood thing is, these “pulse type” after-noon storms rarely last for more than anhour.

So please, be weather aware beforeyou cast off. Have a weather alert radioor a weather app on your smart phoneto keep you informed of dangerousweather. If you can hear thunder, youcan be hit by lightning.
