Corps, America Chestnut Society partner for Allatoona Lake ProjectThe US Army Corps of Engineers at

Allatoona Lake is currently working inpartnership with the Georgia Chapter ofthe American Chestnut Society on theAllatoona Lake Chestnut RestorationProject. The project consists of theAmerican Chestnut Society providingboth blight-resistant seeds and back-crossed trees for planting.

The society will also offer expertanalysis and advice on the project, in-cluding soil testing, test orchards, and as-sistance with backcrossed orchards. TheUS Army Corps of Engineers at Alla-toona will provide areas suitable forplanting, such as a backcross orchard onthe north side of the lake. There will alsobe a demonstration site near the Alla-toona Operations Project ManagementOffice so that the public can find outmore about the tree.

This is the first large program inGeorgia committed to restoring theAmerican Chestnut to its previous glory.

The American Chestnut tree was anessential component of the entire easternU.S. ecosystem. A late-flowering, reli-able and productive tree, unaffected byseasonal frosts, it was the single most

important food source for a wide varietyof wildlife from bears to birds. In theearly 20th century, a disease known asthe Chestnut Blight was introduced to theNorth America Chestnut population. Theblight, imported to the US on AsianChestnut trees, is a fungus dispersed viaspores in the air, raindrops or animals. The blight successfully wiped out almostthe entire American Chestnut populationin the eastern US, a population once asnumerous as the oak.

While the American Chestnut treesdied, the root systems of chestnuts stilllived and provided new trees where theold ones once grew. These trees too aresusceptible to the blight and usually liveto an average age of five to 10 years.

It’s from these trees that the American

Dog Days of Summer are really barkingThe Dog Days of Summer in full

swing now. Through much of the sum-mer we have been under the massive areaof high pressure that seems to swingback and forth, east to west and west toeast, across the nation’s heartland. Thispattern has impacted our weather in sev-eral ways. First, it has contributed totemperatures that are running about fiveto seven degrees above average for northGeorgia. You know how hot it has beenand how great our favorite lake feels on ahot summer day. As the high drifts overour area of the country, it generally hasput a lid on the atmosphere, limiting ourafternoon storms. However, as the highdrifts back to our west, areas of thunder-storms move around the ridge and enternorth Georgia. This has been a blessingon those hot afternoons but has createdhavoc as well. I don’t think I have seen asingle day with widespread storms thissummer that we not had a lightning fireand dozens of trees falling.

The trend this month will be for fewerafternoon storms with temperatures re-maining above average. I know the lakehas been down for most of the summer. However, as you well know, it is much

better than it was a few years ago. Eventhough our afternoon showers and stormswill be less than July, we still have towatch for the potential tropical systemsthat tend to spin up this time of year.Hurricane season runs from June 1stthrough November 30th. However thecore of the season begins in the middle ofAugust and peaks in mid-September. Itwould not take a full blown hurricane oreven a tropical storm to cause mayhemhere.

A simple tropical depression thatstalls can drop incredible amounts ofrain. You may recall tropical storm Al-berto that became a tropical depressionand dropped more than 30 inches of rainin south and central Georgia. With all the

About Allatoona: Lake Allatoona is the oldest multi-purpose project in the Corps'South Atlantic Division. Preliminary site work began in 1941 but was discontinuedby the outbreak of World War II. The dam was completed and placed into operationin January, 1950, at a cost of about $31.5 million. The lake is located on the EtowahRiver, a tributary of the Coosa River, about 30 miles north of Atlanta. The damimpounds run-off water from 1,110 square miles into a large, irregular lake. Duringperiods of heavy rainfall, excess runoff is stored to alleviate floods in the lowerEtowah Valley and to reduce flood heights at Rome, GA. During dry periods, storedwater is released to supplement runoff for power production and to produce streamflow. Because the lake serves a large drainage area and is relatively small, the levelof the lake may fluctuate greatly. Daily increases of three to four feet are not uncom-mon following heavy rains with an increase of 20 feet recorded in one week's timeseveral years ago.

Rules, Regulations and MoreGuidelines are not intended as restraints to the enjoyment of park visitors, but as

aids for orderly operation, visitor safety and for the protection of the environment andpublic property. Complete rules and regulations are posted at the entrances to allcampgrounds and copies are available at entry stations.

I have done some surveys on topog-raphy, especially at the headwaters ofLake Lanier in the northern part of HallCounty.

Over the past several years, we haveseen this area build and grow. If a trop-ical system pulls into north Georgiafrom the Gulf of Mexico, the topogra-phy of the land will play a very impor-tant role in flood potential. With

Key officials tour Allatoona Lake, courtesy LAABy Pamela A. Keene

A boatload of elected officials fromall levels of government toured Alla-toona Lake in early July, hosted by theLake Allatoona Association. Boardinga 100-foot houseboat at 10 a.m. on theTuesday after the Fourth of July holi-day weekend, they took a two-and-a-half-hour cruise to various points ofinterest around the lake.

“The purpose was to get our electedofficials out on the lake and tell ourstory,” said Lake Allatoona AssociationPresident Sean Nicholl. “They areelected by us and we wanted to makesure they knew all about the lake andhow important it is in this area and forthe state.”

Attendees included Congressman

Phil Gingrey and staff members JohnO’Keefe and Andrew Johnson, astaffer from Congressman Tom Price’soffice, State Representative CharliceByrd, State Senator Lindsey Tippins,Cobb County Commission ChairmanTim Lee, Cartersville Mayor Matt San-tini, and Cobb Commissioner HelenGoreham. The Lake Allatoona Board ofDirectors and several members, also at-tended, along with Robert Morrisonfrom the Lake Allatoona PreservationAuthority.

“The tour included looking at areasof shoreline erosion and discussing is-sues around water quality, water supplyand lake levels,” Nicholls said. Thegroup plans another such event forelected officials later in the year.

elevations getting higher and higher aswe move up through northeast Georgia, rain can become even more extreme, aswell as run-off from that rain.

So, my main concern would be ex-treme flooding for the areas around thenorthern reaches of Lake Lanier. With anabove average hurricane season still pre-dicted and the peak yet to come, we’ll bewatching the skies.

Lake cleanup becomes community partnershipBy Pamela A. Keene

The Lake Allatoona Preservation Au-thority and the Lake Allatoona Associa-tion have partnered for the 2011 GreatLake Allatoona Cleanup, a lake-widecleanup that involves thousands of volun-teers each year. Last year, volunteers re-moved more than 40 tons of waste fromin and around the lake. This year’s eventtakes place on Saturday, September 17.The program is conducted annually incoordination with the US Army Corps ofEngineers.

“This is a transition year for the GreatLake Allatoona Cleanup,” said SeanNicholl, president of the Lake AllatoonaAssociation. “The two organizations areworking in partnership for 2011, and theevent will migrate to the Lake AllatoonaAssociation for future years.”

Each year, more than 4,000 volunteerscollect many tons of trash, debris andtires from the more than 250 miles ofshoreline. Volunteers include boy scouts, girl scouts, lease holders around the lake, private clubs, marinas, boaters, fisher-men, environmentalists, and families thatare vigilant in wanting to improve thewater quality and protect Lake Allatoona.

The association is a 501(c) 3 and its

members are all volunteers. The associa-tion developed a volunteer-led organiza-tional structure for the cleanup, with fivesub-committees sharing the work. “Wehave wonderful folks who love the lakewho have stepped up to lead thecleanup,” Nicholl said. “The cleanup hasalways been a big community initiativeand we are inviting even more people tojoin us this year.” Overall leadership willbe provided by the 2011 GLAC Commit-tee with two co-chairs, Aaron Feldt, rep-resenting the Lake Allatoona Associationand a 25-year veteran of the event, andWayne Biasetti, representing the LakeAllatoona Preservation Authority andalso a long-time participant in thecleanup. After the cleanup there will be apicnic for the volunteers at RiversidePark below the dam with food, gamesand music. “I’m excited about this year’sevent,” Feldt said. “With the volunteer-driven organizational structure that weare developing, we believe we can aimfor a more successful cleanup while in-volving a lot more people.”
