Grid and HDR Options Turned “On”

• The Grid setting is useful when applying the “Rule of Thirds” for composition.

• Think of the Rule of Thirds as a guideline, not an absolute rule.

• The HDR option takes two exposures, one light and one dark, and combines them into a single photo with better highlight detail. I leave it set to “On” or “Auto” all the time.

The Digital Zoom Feature – Avoid it!

• Aim the camera, then pinch outward with your fingers on the screen or slide the zoom bar to the right to zoom in and to the left to zoom out. • Note that the zoom feature is digital, and not optical, so the more you zoom the lower the image quality of the photo. Instead of using the digital zoom, zoom with your feet - get closer to the subject.

Shooting a Video with Your iPhone • Your iPhone lets you do three

kinds of video: time-lapse, slow-motion, and regular video

• Video mode records and plays at 30 frames-per-second (the 6/6 Plus can do 60 fps)

• Slo-Mo mode allows you to slow down selected parts of the video when it is played back

• Time-lapse mode compresses

your video to play in 20-40 seconds, regardless of the length of the original video

You can view a video and do basic editing to it. • For many more video editing features, download a copy of iMovie ($4.99,

free with a new iPhone) from the App Store. iMovie is big (600+ MB), so make sure you have enough space on your iPhone to store it.

Lighting Suggestions for Outdoor Photography with your iPhone

• Your iPhone camera has a limited dynamic range, compared to point-&-shoot & SLR cameras, which have bigger sensors.

• In general, avoid shooting directly into the light on bright sunny days, unless you are trying to shoot silhouettes or a backlit subject.

• Side-light emphasizes texture and form. • Frontal lighting, in which the sun is behind you,

minimizes contrast, texture and shadows. • On sunny days, shoot early or late. • Diffuse (cloudy) lighting is best for shooting close-ups

or portraits of people. • Misty lighting is moody, with low contrast.

Things to Consider When Composing (iPhone) Photos

• What is the main subject of the photo?

• Horizontal or vertical ? • Where should I position the iPhone? (leading lines, framing) • Where should I place the main subject in the picture frame? (e.g.

“rule” of thirds) • Maximize the use of diagonal lines to give visual energy to your

composition • What should I crop out of the photo? (e.g. white skies and other

distractions)
