everyone I’ve talked to these days has mixed thoughts about these challenging times we are in. however, I believe the opportunities today are unique and the blessings that come from those opportunities are even sweeter.

here is a picture of my grandfather, dad, brother-in-law and me, taken about 10 years ago on the shores of Pelican Lake in Orr, Mn. We were on our annual deer hunting trip. In fact, it was our last trip taken all together. During this hunting trip, grandpa got lost going to his stand which marked the beginning of life changes. This was the last time we went deer hunting on this land because after that it was sold. My father recently purchased a great piece of hunting land with a small lake and beautiful woods, by the family cabin in Crosslake, Mn. We are making new memories hunting with our kids. grandpa, who is 96, is in very poor health and in his final days, but he is still strong in Spirit!

grandpa was my first cheerleader in life, well, besides my mom. She gets some credit for birthing me, sorry mom, but I think you will agree, grandpa empowered me. he did things for me, he gave to me, he rewarded me, he would challenge me beyond my abilities. he understood the secret of promotion; blessing. I would say to grandpa, “I don’t know if I can handle this.” and expect a hug but instead he would give me a, “Yes you can!” Not in any manner of duty but instead wanting me to explore unknown opportunities without holding my hand. I will always love you grandpa.

through this northern wonderland. Conveniently located near the trails, the Grand Ely Lodge provides comfortable accommodations for visitors as they experience the majesty of the north woods.

The North American Bear Center is a top attraction in the Ely area and visitors can see Ted, Honey and Lucky, as these resident bears go about their daily routines. Perhaps the most famous resident of the Ely area was Dorothy Molter, who was originally a nurse from Chicago. Years ago, after visiting a friend who operated a resort near Ely, Dorothy fell in love with the area

and took over the resort after her friend’s death. Later, Dorothy lived alone in her small cabin on Knife Lake for over 56 years and often welcomed guests with her famous home made root beer. She passed away in 1986 - a true example of a modern day pioneer. Her cabin has been restored and visitors can tour it now in it’s new location in Ely.

Brainerd Lakes Area A Winter Sports Capital

For those vacationers who really enjoy winter sports and ice fishing, the Brainerd Lakes Area with over

465 lakes will be the perfect destination. The area is composed of several different neighborhood communities, all interconnected and tied together by a large network of lakes. Many of the trails are groomed for snowmobilers and cross-country skiers who choose to enjoy the beauty of the winter landscape. There are 1200 miles of connected snowmobile trails and a color-coding system is used to guide snowmobliers traveling the various routes. In January of each year, many riders enjoy taking the Paul Bunyan Trail to Pequot Lakes for the Antique Snowmobile Rendezvous.

Ski Gull is the perfect place for those who enjoy downhill skiing. There are thirteen runs with chair lifts; rentals and refreshments are provided for the convenience of guests. Cross Country skiing is also very popular in the Brainerd Lakes area and there are 240 miles of groomed and ungroomed trails. The Brainerd Lakes Chamber of Commerce website features on on-line calendar of events so visitors can perfectly time their vacation to include the festivals or attractions that they would like to include on their vacation.

Lutsen The Destination for Unusual Winter fun

Lutsen, located on the north shore of Lake

Superior, is often considered to be the gateway to the Thunder Bay area and the great Canadian outdoors. This northern resort area offers some unusual activities for families, including the exciting Alpine Slide at Lutsen Mountain. A chair lift at the Alpine Slide elevates the visitors to the peak of Eagle Mountain and then each person rides down the mountain on a breathtaking ride of twists and turns. Each rider is able to control the speed of their descent, depending on their tolerance for sharp turns and acceleration. Two to four hour-long dog sled rides are available with an experienced “musher” driving the sled. Longer rides of five or six days in length can also be scheduled. For these longer sled dog rides, over night accommodations can be in cabins or even tents, if people wish to experience the reality of real life on the trail. For

those who want to be in control the dogs, a short instruction session from an experienced musher is required, but then they can actually become the “musher” for a team of fi ve to six sled dogs, even children can be instructed on how to control a sled of three to four dogs. What a great way to experience the life of an early fur trader!

Snowboarding and alpine skiing are very popular in the Lutsen area since there are 90 runs on 1000 acres of undisturbed and

pristine wilderness. Gondolas transport skiers to the top of the mountains and rental equipment is available for those who prefer to travel light. For those who choose to take the path less traveled, try snow shoeing to get a good work out and experience the quiet beauty of the great

undisturbed north woods. Horse drawn sleigh rides are a popular attraction for families as they are transported through the woods near the Cascade River State Park, where visitors often stop to enjoy the hiking trails, cross country skiing, snowmobling trails and year round camping areas.

Lake of the Woods An Island Destination

If you would like to see “The Top of the Nation”, it’s closer than you think. Lake of the Woods County is

the state’s youngest county and was organized in 1922 when local residents voted to be separated from Beltrami County. The area is offi cially a part of Minnesota, but is only connected to it only by water or by traveling on a scenic road, which will take visitors 45 miles across Manitoba. When traveling along this remote route, tourists often see timber wolves, bob cats, lynx and cougars in the distance. A magnifi cent lake, also appropriately named the Lake of the Woods, occupies parts of Ontario, Manitoba and Minnesota, and separates this small area of land from the rest of Minnesota. There are over 14,522 islands on the Lake of the Woods. The clearer the water, the more it is “interpreted” as being good, clean healthy water (not necessarily true). When it comes to size, there are people that want a small lake for the quiet, peaceful surroundings and can often get more for their money. Others tend to like the larger lakes for a number of reasons, including:

The ability for motorized water sports without • having to do the figure eight or a circle, which helps assure visitation to the cottage/home by their kids or grandkids as they grow older.

If one enjoys cruising or sightseeing on a boat, • there is less tendency to outgrow the lake.

Increased opportunity for fishing if the lake has a • number of bays, etc.

The number of people looking for a larger lake; • increases ease of resale.

What do you like most about being the host of “Minnesota Bound”? Raven’s really the star of the show, but I like the variety and story telling about interesting people, places, and experiences; from Lyme disease to eating fried dandelions.

Which shows or topics are you most proud of? There have been so many great shows, but one of my most memorable was a fishing trip. I watched a man bait a hook with a minnow, get his bobber ready, cast out, and catch a fish only to release it. He was born without arms and did all of this with his feet. It was absolutely amazing and inspiring.

I also enjoy brightening people’s days by sharing about things that are around us; dragon flies, purple martens, sumac in the fall, wrens, blue jays, critters, fish, wood ticks, and Highway 38 (which I wrote an original song about)…

In all of your travels, what do you feel is a must see? Lac qui Parle (known as the “lake that speaks”), located in western Minnesota by the Minnesota River, specifically in October when tens of thousands of geese are migrating.

What would you recommend for a unique adventure? Hire a fishing guide with a drift boat to explore the Upper St. Croix or Mississippi River by St. Cloud or Elk River. Drift, sight see, and enjoy great smallmouth and fly fishing.

What is your favorite lake getaway or lake destination? Lake of the Woods, on the Canada side, and Rainy Lake are my first choices, followed by Lake Vermillion.

Who has inspired you? I’m grateful that my parents raised me in the outdoors and for my grandpa’s great storytelling. Jim Schwartz, now 90+ years old, inspired me to try journalism while studying fishing and wildlife biology and pursing music. I will always be grateful to Jim for that direction.

What destinations or drives do you feel are worth seeing? The Red Wing area, Itasca State Park, the North Shore, and Voyageurs National Park in International Falls, MN. Visit the Kettle Falls

Hotel while you are there. It has a rich history spanning several hundred years and many presidents have stayed there.

Where would you recommend for a family getaway? Whitewater State Park and Itasca State Park, or really any State Park! It’s also fun to take the family on a summer evening launch fishing trip on Mille Lacs (a fishing boat that accommodates large groups).

Where would you recommend for a romantic vacation? Grand Marais is known for the sea harbor, great shops, and it’s full of artistic people.

Where are your favorite destinations and places to visit, and why? My boyhood stomping grounds in southeastern Minnesota, including the hardwood forest, is always a favorite. In the fall, southwestern Minnesota has pheasants, prairies, and prairie flowers and northwestern Minnesota has flat, vast landscape and waterfowl migration. Crookston has the largest native prairie with 30,000+ acres. The Arboreal Forest on the North Shore and the prairie along the MN, ND and SD borders are enjoyable places to visit. Grand Rapids, Park Rapids, and Detroit Lakes, the sunfish capital of the world, are also fun areas to visit.

What or where do you believe are undiscovered gems? The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, located in Bloomington, is a hidden gem.

What do you like most about living in the Midwest? I have always liked living here and can’t imagine living anywhere else. I enjoy the people, culture, lakes, variety of things to do, forest, prairies, Vikings, and Twins!

Tell us about your infamous tagline, “Remember, introduce a kid to the great outdoors.” It’s important to pass on the tradition of fishing. After fishing with my 6 year old grandson, Jake, the other day, we were cleaning a fish and he said something that touched my heart. He said “Grandpa, I really enjoy fishing with you.” It’s all about quality time, talking, and spending time together. Sports are important, but very few activities provide more quality time and conversation like fishing.

Fall in the upper Midwest is often seen as a time to pack away the summer toys and take in the

delights that come with the change of seasons. Taking the kids apple picking or a romantic fall colors getaway takes the place of time spent on the water. However, one of the most over looked opportunities is fall fishing.

As the lakes cool down in October they begin to turn over, bringing many of the monster fish out of their deep summer holes.

I know for a lot of people the term fall fishing conjures up images of sitting in a boat, wrapped up in all the rain gear and old sweaters you own, freezing spray blasting you in the face while you pound across the bitter waves and dream with a longing ache for a cup of hot cocoa. Believe me I’ve had many a long Saturday picking frost out of my beard where I lived that exact experience.

However, you might be comforted to know that some of the best bites of fall fishing can be found on those rogue days of Indian summer. The slight warming in the water turns up a fish’s metabolism, as they look for a good meal to help them through the lean days of winter to come. For our purposes here we’ll put away the frost bite warnings and turn instead to tips on how to make the most of that last Indian summer fishing outing.

The days this time of year are short but your best chance for success is after the peak of the mid day sun. I tend to plan an early lunch then head straight to the launch.

When you get to the lake take a moment to walk down and look the access over. In the fall water levels can be low. After a summer of people power loading their boats at the ramp there can be a gravel pile in the shallows. Make sure your motor is trimmed well out of the water when you launch your boat. I always bring spare batteries. Keeping their extra weight in the bow will help hold the stern of the boat level.

Anytime we travel on the open lake I always make sure everyone has a rain coat on. Even though it might be a warm day, you could still catch a little cold spray cutting across a wave.

When it comes to choosing your spot you will find warmer water on the north side of the lake and by current areas, like the mouth of a creek. Reefs and rock bars that border on deep water drop-offs tend to hold more of the bait fish that draw in big pike or walleye.

If you’re looking for a fun afternoon of pan fishing with the kids, shallow

structures near shore tend to hold them this time of year. The last of the green weed beds and fallen timber on near shore flats are a good bet for blue gills while vertical structures like old stumps and bridge pylons will attract crappies.

Bait selection can also be a key factor. If the water is in the low 50’s or below a stick bait will do better than a shad body. This is a time of year when bigger and louder is better. That flashy fire tiger bait the size of your fist with a dozen rattles chattering around inside is a prime offering.

Pan fishing can call for a little trial and error. Small minnows, if you can find them, are a hot ticket for crappies. If minnows can be a little hard to come by, I’ll fall back on wax worms as a pan fishing staple.

As the day gets later be mindful of the long shadows cast by the low angle of the sun. Predators will try to use these shade lines in the shallows to ambush the forage fish hanging near cover. Working areas shallow to deep as the sun creeps low will help you dial in a good depth. Sometimes fish can be found incredibly shallow so you need to be willing to be surprised.

While some of the tactics might depart from the comfort zone of summer, a fall fishing trip can be a great way to scratch the angler’s itch before ice up.
