LAKE TAHOEGEOLOGY

Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada (Lake Tahoe, n.d.)

Elevation is 6,225 ft (1,897)(Lake Tahoe, n.d.)

Location is between California and Nevada(Lake Tahoe, n.d.)

The lake is about 2 million years old (Lake Tahoe, n.d.)

Part of the Lake Tahoe Basin(Lake Tahoe, n.d.)

The lake shaped during the ice age (Lake Tahoe, n.d.)

Pine trees have been around since the beginning of time(Patrick Malcolm, 2007)

When cave men discovered fire, pine cones were collected to keep the fire burning(Patrick Malcolm, 2007)

Pine trees became the leading source of products such as papers and building materials(Patrick Malcolm, 2007)

Pine trees is known as a survival plant. Its sub-bark is moist and almost sweet. Also, it’s rich in vitamins A and C (Patrick Malcolm, 2007)

Four o’clock, also known as marvel of peru(The D. Landreth Seed Company, 2009)

Four o’clock is native to the tropical Amerca(The D. Landreth Seed Company, 2009)

In the 1500’s, four o’clock was introduced to Spain and England from Peru(The D. Landreth Seed Company, 2009)

The four o’clock produce magenta, yellow, rose, and white color(The D. Landreth Seed Company, 2009)

Four o’clock is usually grown from seed, however, they produce tubers that can be dug out after the plant dies back in the fall(The D. Landreth Seed Company, 2009) Four O’Clock

Ant can form supercolonies, which has several queens and nests(Kristian Sjogren, 2012)

The queen lay eggs that would become worker ants(Kristian Sjogren, 2012)

More than 100 years ago, ant species were form and spread through out other continents(Kristian Sjogren, 2012)

The dominance of ants can affect the ecosystem since they eliminate other ant species and insects(Kristian Sjogren, 2012)

Scientists believed for a while that bees are 120 million years old. However, their fossil records were dated back to about 65 million years (Cornell University, 2006)

According to the fossil records, bees obtain some of wasp traits which mean an evolutionary link between the two (Cornell University, 2006)

Bees are considered to be part of plant evolution because of their capability to spread pollen (Cornell University, 2006)

ANDESITE (IGNEOUS ROCK) Andesite, an extrusive rock,

compose of basalt and rhyolite(The University of Auckland, 2005)

Andesite lava forms thick lava flow and domes(The University of Auckland, 2005)

It is a volcanic equivalent of diorite(The University of Auckland, 2005)

It is typically bluish-grey or grey(The University of Auckland, 2005)

Because of its high silica content, andesite is use as aggregate(The University of Auckland, 2005)

NOVACULITE (METAMORPHIC ROCK) Novaculite rock is dense,

hard, fine-grained, siliceous rock(Hobart King, n.d.)

Novaculite forms from sediments deposited in marine environments (Hobart King, n.d.)

European settlers used novaculite to sharpen metal tools and weapons(Hobart King, n.d.)

It is also sometimes use as a reservoir for oil and natural gas(Hobart King, n.d.)

SILTSTONE (SEDIMENTARY ROCK) Siltstone is a hardened

sedimentary rock that is not laminated (Siltstone, n.d.)

Composed with angular silt-sized particles (0.0039 to 0.063 mm [0.00015 to 0.0025 inch] in diameter) (Siltstone, n.d.)

It is an intermediate between sandstones and shales (Siltstone, n.d.)
