His Holiness ChadralRinpoche is one of thevery few realized masters(with both attainments andrealizations) still remainingwith us today, and thereare many great Rinpocheswho are either his juniors orhis disciples. It is, indeed, peerless to nd someone

who can be compared withHis Holiness boundlesswisdom, as well as thebreadth and depth of his realizations. It is even muchrarer to nd someone who has the noble character of hisgreat humility of heart. As for the many past propheciesthat have been left behind to predict the appearance ofsuch a great master, it is indeed hard to nd nowadays. It is in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition that the highnessor lowness of ones throne distinguishes the rank orposition of a lama. In the case of His Holiness ChadralRinpoche, he will always let the guest Rinpoches to siton the highest thrones, while he himself will always sit on

    the modest one!

His Holiness Elegant Wanderlust Styleof a Hidden YogiA Regent in Tibet named Redring Jampal Yeshe TenpeGyaltsap, also known as Hutukatu Nolmenhan (anofcial title in Mongolian), had requested for teachingsfrom the Great Khenpo Ngagi Wangpo Rinpoche, whowas then the Abbot of Kathok Monastery. The GreatKhenpo then said to him: I am too old now for transmittingthe teachings to you. I have a disciple whose mind and

realization is the same as mine, and he is called ChadralSangye Dorje. You can go and ask for the teachingsfrom him.

When the Regent was nally able to nd HisHoliness Chadral Rinpoche in the mountain caves, hegot the reply that I am sorry, there is nothing specialabout me, and I have nothing to teach you. Please gosomewhere else for teachings! Then, the Regent hadto show His Holiness the letter that was written, signedand stamped by the Great Khenpo himself. With this, HisHoliness was nally invited to Lhasa and became theRegents Principle Master. Moreover, His Holiness wasempowered as the Spiritual Master of the entire land of

Amdo, central Tibet, and Kham. Such persons as major and minor outstandingmasters who have reincarnated in a series of lifetimes;holy persons rich in qualities of both learning andrealization; great leaders elevated due to authority andresponsibility; important ofcials proud due to their clan, family, inuence, power, or wealth; and men and womenbenefactors adorned with faith, riches, generosity, and the wealth of noble beings all came to honour HisHoliness and bowed their heads at his Golden LotusFeet, marked with auspicious wheels. For all these, HisHoliness saw it as a distraction from the path.

prepares for the future of Yangsi Rinpoches propagationof the Holy Dharma. In order to make ways for thesepreparations, His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche has tochange his previous style of doing things in a very low-keymanner. For such a great realized master - one whosestrong and perseverant will-power will not be moved fora single inch even when thousand troops of armies comeagainst him, nor will tons of fortune change his mind foreven a second - because of his Great Compassionatesincere wish, love and respect for His Holiness Dudjom

Rinpoche, His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche willfullychanges his previous style in order to help YangsiRinpoche, who is now in a comparatively weak position. When His Holiness sees the photo of Yangsi Rinpoche,he will respectfully put it on top of his head for reverence. As the Root Guru of Yangsi Rinpoche, His Holinessimpeccable deeds have shown us that his humility ofheart is like a great valley, deep, unfathomable andbeyond description! Indeed, his seless sacrices aretremendous!Every time when we think of this, we areso moved by His Holiness seless deeds that we havetears in our eyes, and our internal organs just run wild!

There is another story about His Holiness when he

was still quite unknown by others in Tibet. At one time, the Great Khenpo Ngagi Wangpo Rinpoche was givingsome teachings at a very large ceremonial gathering ofmore than a few hundred people, with some high lamassitting on the high thrones, while His Holiness ChadralRinpoche was sitting at the back unnoticed. Then, atthe end of the gathering, the Great Khenpo announced:Among all of you here today, there are less thanve of you who have one-tenth of my realization; andthere is only one person here whose realization is nodifferent from mine, and he is Sangye Dorje. He can nowrepresent me to transmit the teachings and his meritsare the same as mine.

With this announcement, there was an uproar, and everybodys attention was focused upon HisHoliness. Many people came up to His Holiness andcongratulated him. Afterwards, they were preparing fora huge celebration for the next day, in order to showtheir respects to His Holiness. During the middle ofthat night, His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche quietly tookaway his tent and left, so that those people could notnd him anywhere early next morning. Not being trappedby fame and glory, and not to be stained by wealthand offerings,His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche suddenlydisappeared in the middle of the night and continuedon with his rm, solid and steadfast practice of the Holy

Dharma, far away from this world in the wilderness!

Incomparable, now and in the past, for his humility asvast as a valley,Humble, yet rm for his principles, extremely hard to ndin this world,Fameand fortune could not lock up the heart and mindof this wise man,Lostin the dark night, he continues on with his Dharmapractice.

So, at one time, after the transmissions of importantDzogchen teachings, His Holiness told the Regent thathe would want to go to some remote holy places forpilgrimage. In accompanying His Holiness, the Regenthad sent a troop of servants and soldiers for protection. After arriving at the destination, His Holiness ChadralRinpoche asked the troop to go back, saying that hewould stay there for his quiet practice. After the Regentknew of this, he immediately sent more troops to go andsearch for His Holiness, but nowhere did they nd him.

Finally, they found a beggar who had earlier exchangedhis beggars clothes for the clothes of beautiful brocadesthat His Holiness had worn before.

Every Dharma practitioner will boast and feelcondent that he/she will be able to go over the hurdlesof fame, glory, wealth and power. But if the time comeswhen this real situation occurs, one will usually makeup a lot of excuses for self-deception (as well as forcheating others), such that one will feel comfortable inaccepting these pleasant feelings of being honoured. All those thoughts of Dharma practice in solitude, andall those promises of meditational stabilization, will soonbe carried away by the eight worldly concerns. When all

Dharma practitioners are put to the test of whether theirwords, views and conducts are in congruent witheach other, it is most likely that most of them would failthis important test! Not even to bring away half a pieceof colourful cloud (meaning glory), but only bringinga beggars cloth to wander in the mountain caves for hisDharma practice, there is none other in this world whocan do so except His Holiness Chadral Rinpoche!

His Holiness elegant wanderlust style of a vagabondrecluse and of a hidden yogi, to be evident at anymoment, erects an excellent paradigm and example forall future Dharma practitioners which are incomparableand unsurpassed in this world. At the same time, his pure

and clean style of Dharma practice has shattered thefalse masks of many a so-called Dharma practitionerswho would pretend themselves to be high in charactersoutwardly, but are, in fact, full of lusts and other poisonsdeep down inside their hearts and minds.

When asked about his trip from Tibet to Bhutan, HisHoliness smiled and said: Very light and happy, withfreeness. The real meaning of this being that: he did notbring anything except himself, and so he was very light;he even did not have a single penny with him, and so heneeded not worry about being robbed, and so he washappy; his only clothes were the beggars clothes, andso there was a freenessof heart.

Naturallyabiding, there were no worries in his mind.Likethe wind in the sky, it freely blows,Toomany happenings in this worldly context,Not to be stained for even a bit of love and hate!

His Holiness reactions to fame and fortuneis like this, then how about His Holiness reactions

toward adversec o n d i t i o n s ?W e h a d t h eopportuni ty toask His Holinessabout this, andhis answer wasv e r y s i m p l e :Since I was veryyoung, I had thegood opportunityto learn the HolyDharma. I am afortunate person, and there haven e v e r b e e na n y a d v e r s econdi t ions forme. It is just soordinary! Do nottake these fewwords lightly, for these words can only come from themouth of the very wise! As far as we know, there weremany adverse conditions duringHis Holiness whole life.Yetthese did not do him any harm, nor did they leaveany traces upon his life, for His Holiness had taken themall up upon himself on his Path of Dharma practice!

With perseverance in his tough activities, His Holinessbody can bear the most unbearable acts; his speechnever speaks anything about himself; and his mind isdwelling in the natural state of resting as it is or non-action- only attending to things as they come withoutany attachments! This is denitely the merging of theview, meditation and action of the Great Perfection(Dzogchen) with His Holiness body, speech and mind,in order that everything is so spontaneously arising! Thisis, indeed, not a simple matter. Thus, the saying in theMountain Retreat (by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche)of When realization becomes as vast as space, alladverse conditions arise as friends is the exact reectionof His Holiness stage of realization!

A lot of Dharma practitioners, when great impacts ofadverse conditions arise, will be crushed by them, andthey might end up becoming powerless and collapsed.Their body will be weakened; their speech will onlyspeak of unwholesome things; and their mind will beentangled like strings. Adverse conditions have mademany Dharma practitioners knelt and bowed down infront of the cruel reality. It is, indeed, not an easy matter

to practice the Holy Dharma in times of difculties and ofadverse conditions!

Windsof prosperity come and go,Like smoke and mist they will naturally disperse anddisappear,Adverse conditions come suddenly like gust and frost,Naturally resting in his mind, just let it be!
