SCHOOL BOARD PARENT MEMBERS 2018

Congratulations to Ms Lucy Hopkins, one year member and Ms Alexia Caraes, two year member for their successful nomination to the school board. Mr Kael Driscoll will continue as a parent member in 2018. The minutes of the school board meeting held on Wednesday 8 November will be available on the school website as soon as possible. A ‘hard’ copy will also be available to parents in the school board file kept in the front office. If you have any queries about the school board, please see one of the school board members.

PARENT/VOLUNTEER THANK YOU

Thank you to Mr Kael Driscoll for volunteering his time to be the DJ at the recently held P&C disco. Everyone that attended had a fabulous time.

Thank you very much to Mrs Pamela Van der Meulen for all her wonderful organisation of the recently held school disco.

ATTENDANCE

It is very important that children attend school every day that school is on unless they are sick. In this instance we ask that parents phone or email the school to advise that their child is away. School commences at 8:40 am and thank you to parents for ensuring that your child/ren are at school for the start of the day. If for any reason your child arrives after the siren we ask they come via the office to receive a late note. The parents of children in Kindergarten and Pre Primary can collect the late note from the office. Thank you to parents for your support.

CROSSING STREETS

Due to the number of busy streets that surround our school it is advisable when possible to cross the road with the cross walk attendant, the overhead bridge crossing or use the traffic lights making sure to look both ways and especially looking out for cars turning corners.

Sleep

School-aged children need 10 -11 hours sleep a night. Getting a good night’s sleep will help your child to be more settled, happy and ready for school, and will strengthen his/her immune system. Here are some sleep tips:

Have a bedtime routine – this will help your child wind

down from the day.

Keep the bedroom dark, cool and quiet - this will help

your child drift off easily. If anxieties or worries are keeping your child from relaxing, acknowledge the feelings and deal with it straight away or plan to sort the issue out in the morning after a good night’s sleep. Remember, medication is not the answer to children’s sleep problems.

Contact your local Community Health Nurse or Community Health Centre, Deb Aggett on 0417 851 497 for more information.

BICYCLE THIEVES Wembley Police Station would like to bring to your attention a recent increase in bicycle thefts from schools during normal school

attendance hours. Security footage has been received that shows a group of juveniles entering school grounds, in one instance jumping over a relatively high fence and utilising bolt cutters to cut the chain/steel cable locks securing the bicycle to the rack before lifting the bicycle over the fence and subsequently removing bicycles from the grounds. Security footage assists us in identifying who the offenders are however prevention is better than cure and any assistance to minimise further thefts is greatly appreciated. Students and parents could also be encouraged to utilise a Bicycle D-lock style padlock similar to the one pictured below as these appear to be more cut resistant than the steel chain or steel cable style of bicycle lock.

COMMUNITY NEWS

We need children aged 4- 7 years Can you help?

Asthma is the most common chronic illness in children. It results in wheezing and is often associated with cough and/or shortness of breath during or after exercise. In young children, the diagnosis of exercise-induced asthma is difficult as the tests we normally use for adults are harder for young children to perform. Princess Margaret Hospital is a world leader in paediatric care and our researchers have explored newer tests that can be easily performed by children as young as 3 years. These new tests will assist doctors to diagnose and manage young children with suspected asthma. Our ability to continue our research and to help improve our understanding of asthma in young children relies on the generous assistance of Perth families. For this study, we are looking for families with children aged between 4 and 7 years old with a history of exercise-induced asthma symptoms (wheeze, cough and/or shortness of breath) in the past year to participate. This study, including all recruitment documents, has been approved by the Princess Margaret Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee and is completely voluntary.
