Life stresses are no excuse for Bailey's racist outburst There has been universal condemnation of the racial outbwst by 55-year-old Karen Bailey on a tIain bound for Newcastle last week and rightly so.

Like many other similar incidents that outrage the public, you'd have trouble believing the sustained magnitude of the attack.

She said that personal problems had led to her disgraceful comments and that she had been returning from visiting her husband in a nursing home and was angry at an Asian nurse .

She probably should just shut up now and try to let the incident die down a bit instead of attempting to explain it further. It was good to see that fellow passengers stood

up to intervene. Perhaps the fact it was a 55-yearold woman doing the shouting made it easier for them to step in. Ms Bailey has some difficult days and weeks ahead of her as people in her community recognise here.

But she has brought it all upon herself. I thought we, as a country, were well passed

this type of ridiculous and downright criminal behaviour.

The video of the incident has already gone viral and it paints Australia in a very poor light overseas.

A similar incident in Melbourne came to light last week with a train guard sacked after confronting three passengers who were racially abusing Asian students in April.

The guard moved the troublemakers to another

"

carriage and was met with a stream of profanities when asked them to produce a valid ticket for travel.

When the three left the train at a station a short time later, the guard advised railway protection officers who were on the platform.

Two of the racists ran away with the guard putting his arm on the shoulder of the third to restrain him.

The antagonist threw several punches at the guard who returned serve. The guard said none of his punches had connected.

The guard was later sacked for breaching protocol by leaving the train and throwing the man up against a wall.

He denies throwing the man against the wall and claims the CCTV proves this.

He has, quite rightly I feel, lodged an unfair dismissal claim with Fair Work Australia.

I realise we can't have guards acting like vigilantes, but this is a ridiculous situation.

What was he supposed to do? Just let them escape any form of punishment?

He did not instigate the punching and a lot of people would have responded in exactly the same way if someone was swinging at them.

Full credit to him for intervening in the first place. That takes guts. He wasn't to know if the three racists had knives or guns in their possession.

N AIDOC Week celebrations kicked off with a splash of colour last week, with the region's children getting into the artistic spirit.

New Lambton and Wallsend libraries both held banner making workshops, where participants made NAIDOCthemed banners, using traditional painting techniques while learning about the symbolism of the design.

Newcastle City Council's Aboriginal youth arts officer, Ray Kelly, said the workshops were a good way to engage young people with NAIDOC Week.

"It's a great way to bring young people into the library, as well as providing easy access to Aboriginal culture," Mr Kelly said.

Berejiklian sets the date Minister for Transport says heavy rail line into Newcastle will be cut on Boxing Day

• MELISSAH COMBER W @melcomber

The heavy rail line into Newcastle will be cut on Boxing Day, December 26.

Minister for Transport and the Hunter, Gladys Berejiklian made the announcement last week, saying the line will be truncated past Wickham for work to begin on the construction of a new transport interchange.

"The closure of the heavy rail line will allow work to begin on revitalising Newcastle, with the rail line no longer forming a barrier and dividing the city from one its greatest assets - the waterfront," Ms Berejiklian said.

"Truncation also means existing railway level crossings between Wickham and the beach will effectively be permanently open from Boxing Day onwards."

Labor, the Greens and the Rail, Tram and Bus Union have all slammed the truncation date, saying it will leave commuters stranded by the end of the year.

"The Christmas present is that we're closing the rail service, but we don't really know how commuters in the Hunter will be affected and how they'll be transported around the Hunter area," Wallsend MP

and Shadow Minister for the Hunter, Sonia Hornery told the Post.

"I'm particularly fearful for the Maitland folk and those people living in the Upper Hunter because we don't really know how their rail line will be affected."

Labor candidate for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp said that date would particularly affect tourist destinations.

"Cutting directly on Boxing Day will create chaos, particularly around Camp Shortland, Nobbys, the whole inner city that gets gridlocked already in summer, particularly on weekends all the way round the foreshore - this will cause chaos," he said.

Greens Transport spokesperson, Dr Mehreen Faruqi said the Government timed the event with the holiday season to minimise public outcry.

Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen said that work simply had to be started.

"You've got to start the work sometime," Mr Owen said.

"There'll be a high frequency bus service running, and Novocastrians know it will be great for the city.

"The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages."

Ms Berejiklian said that details about bus arrangements would be released in the coming months.

Dripping with history Historic underground water reservoir to open to the public in 2015

• MELISSAH COMBER _ @melcomber

It's one of Newcastle's historic engineering marvels, but it's never seen the light of the day.

The Res, or Newcastle #1 Reservoir, as it is referred to in Hunter Water archives, is a 132-year-old disused underground water reservoir, and by next year it will be open to the public for tours.

In a bid to reduce water-borne diseases ravaging Novocastrians, The Res was built in 1882 with a storage capacity of two million litres that could be delivered directly to people's homes. It was closed almost 50 years ago, bury

ing a stone archway and 32 four-metre brick columns on prime real estate near Christ Church Cathedral.

State Minister for Natural Resources, Lands and Water, Kevin Humphries visited the site last week, and said the opening would unlock a part of Newcastle's history.

"The reservoir is the first underground reservoir of its age to be opened to the public," he said. Newcastle MP, Tim Owen, Minister Kevin Humphries and Hunter Water managing director, Kim Wood at The Res in Newcastle

"Being inside the reservoir is an extraordinary experience and I am delighted Hunter Water has decided to share it with the community."

The first tour is expected to take place early next year after stairs and lighting are installed, and ventilation is improved.

STATE GOVERNMENT Close to home

Reform disagreements Member for Cessnock, Clayton Barr knows the cycle of domestic violence better than most.

Labor MPs vocal on changes to homelessness services "I come from a domestic violence family situation and we were stuck because of resources and finances," Mr Barr said. "The only way I was able to get out of that with Mum was my older brother had a job and he essentially funded a rental property for us, but for the four or five years prior to that we were in a terrible situation."

• MELISSAH COMBER _ @melcomber

T he State Government has defended its 'Going Home, Staying Home' program, after a vocal Labor backlash to the homelessness reforms.

Local Labor MP's and candidates gathered last week to voice their opposition to the program, after learning that the number of service providers in the state will be cut from 336 to 149, including refuges for victims of domestic violence.

The streamlining of services could also see those who are homeless and those who are seeking refuge housed under the one roof.

Labor Candidate for Newcastle, Tim Crakanthorp said he was especially concerned about cuts to the Newcastle Youth Accommodation Service.

"There is nothing more important than ensuring vulnerable children in Newcastle have a safe place to sleep at night," he said.

"With the very high rates of youth unemployment in Newcastle and particularly with the closing of so much manufacturing in Newcastle, there is a great deal of risk to young people at the moment and a great deal of stress put on them and their families."

Member for Newcastle, Tim Owen said

Shadow Minister for the Hunter. Sonia Hornery. and Deputy Opposition Leader. Linda Burney lead the charge of MP's and candidates

the reforms will be of benefit to the city. "We've introduced a $S15-million pack

age over three years to tackle homelessness," Mr Owen said.

"We've actually had a nine per cent increase in money to Newcastle.

"Some providers have not made the grade, but no Government transitional

services will close. "The bottom line is that we're not cutting

money." A spokesperson from the Family and

Community Services Minister's office stood by the program, saying that, between 2006 and 2011, homelessness in NSW increased by 27 per cent. "The

Mr Barr said that the decision-makers need to listen to those who have been in that situation.

"These are people who don't have the power to defend themselves, so these people aren't going to be able to get organised, to rally, to protest, because they're just trying to survive," he said.

"These people can't defend their ground because they're just trying to find ground to stand up on."

Labor Party are defending a homelessness system that was simply not delivering for the most vulnerable in the community," the spokesperson said.

"Labor are making claims which are not only deceptive and misleading, but prey on the fears of the very people they claim to be supporting.

"While service providers may change under the reform, the services they delivered will continue. There will still be specialist services including for women and children escaping domestic and family violence in the new system."

Walking the walk for improved access • MELISSAH COMBER }I @melcomber

It has been the long-time bane of Newcastle sports fans, but with the Asian Cup around the corner, the walking path between the Broad

meadow train station and Hunter Stadium could be in for an upgrade.

Newcastle City Council is already working in conjunction with the Cup's Local Organising Committee to give the city a spruce before tens of thousands of local and international soccer fans descend in January, and now opposition MPs Sharon Claydon and Sonia Hornery are adding their resources to the mix.

Ms Claydon (Newcastle Federal) and Ms Hornery (Wallsend State) have put their focus on the walking route between the station and the stadium, saying there are some places where improvements need to be made.

"It's a great walk, but there are some bits where pedestrians are forced onto road space," Ms Claydon said.

"The lighting isn't great, and there could be some improved signage for out-oftowners as well."

Ms Hornery said that the path isn't wheelchair-friendly, but improvements would have a lasting benefit.

Asian Cup, but for the Jets, the Knights and future events," she said.

Newcastle Lord Mayor, Councillor Jeff McCloy said that the city is working closely with Asian Cup organiser to ensure Newcastle shines.

"Council is one of the many agencies committed to ensuring Newcastle is ready for the spotlight," Cr McCloy said.

"We are scoping a range of projects and initiatives to help achieve this but it is too early to comment on these.

"Ensuring the city as a whole is looking its best is our priority."

Ms Claydon and Ms Hornery said they will write to Ministers to try and obtain funds to assist Council.

Hunter Stadium will host four Asian Cup matches starting with Japan's match against Palestine on January 12.

Oman will take on Kuwait on January 17, with a semi-final to be played on January 27 and the playoff for third and fourth on January 30. Each of the matches will be played at night.

The appearance of the talented Japanese team is expected to draw many thousands of visitors to the region.

Council taking it to the streets Outdoor trading policy up for public exhibition as shop owner slams fee increase

• MELISSAH COMBER _ @melcomber

Newcastle City Council has estimated it will make $125,000 per year if an outdoor trading policy is adopted.

Under the proposal, inner-city retailers would be charged $108 per square metre of space used for racks and stands on public footpaths and other public places, while retailers outside of the inner-city will be charged $57.

Currently, although there are fees to be paid for outdoor dining, there is no Council policy that recognises or allows outdoor trading, despite the Local Government Act 1993 making it illegal for articles to be placed in public spaces without prior approval.

Mat Rundle, owner of a Hunter Street Mall clothing store, MR3, has slammed the fee, saying it's only another reason for retailers to stay away from the CBD.

"What's the point of making it dearer here?" Mr Rundle said. ''We rely on that to get people into the shop.

"It's going to drive more businesses away, and you're going to put people off shopping in the CBD."

Mr Rundle said that retail racks were nothing like outdoor dining.

Hunter Street Mall retailer, Mat Rundle

"You can't compare our racks to the coffee shops," he said. "People actually sit down for a while when they have coffee, but our racks are two metres off the front of the

shop and people stop at them for a minute and move on." Under Council's 2014/15 Delivery Plan, outdoor dining fees are set to increase by 2.8 per cent. The Outdoor

Trading Policy will go on exhibition for 28 days, and will be automatically endorsed if no opposition is received during the public consultation period.

Hunter getting Water Wise Minister Kevin Humphries visits to spread the word on new usage rules

• PAUL MONFORTE

The Hunter region's water use policy has fallen into line with those in Sydney and the Central Coast after the commencement

of new rules on July 1. Minister for Natural Resources, Lands

and Water, Kevin Humphries launched the Water Wise Rules at Parklane Villas, Warners Bay last week in conjunction with Charlestown MP, Andrew Cornwell.

Mr Humphries said the new rules would playa vital role in drought-proofing the region in the face of a 20 per cent increase in population over the next two decades.

"While Hunter Water isn't considering restrictions at this time, Water Wise Rules and being efficient when we use water outdoors is especially important," he said.

The three key Water Wise Rules state: all hand-held hoses must have a trigger nozzle, watering outdoors is permitted before loam and after 4pm and there is to be no hosing of hard surfaces such as paths and driveways except when cleaning with water in necessary for reasons of safety, health, emergency, construction activity or surface discolouration.

Use of water is allowed at any time for

Parklane resident, Bob Dobson putting his new trigger nozzle to use watched by Minister for Natural Resources, Lands and Water, Kevin Humphries and Charlestown MP, Andrew Cornwell

the purpose of cooling people or animals and filling or topping up of pools using a hose from Hunter Water's water supply is permitted. Washing of building struc-

tures, including windows, walls, gutters and roofing using a hose fitted with a trigger nozzle or high pressure cleaning equipment is permitted.

Some businesses that heavily rely on water can use hand-held hoses fitted with a trigger nozzle, sprinklers or other watering systems at any time. This includes commercial nurseries, market gardeners, commercial growers, landscapers, mobile garden contractors and persons responsible for the maintenance of community gardens, bowling greens, cricket wickets, golf tees and greens and tennis courts.

Mr Humphries said that while there were potential fines of $220 for individuals and $550 for businesses who breach the rules, Hunter Water would adopt an educational approach to enforcement and focus only on repeat offenders.

"As a result of the lack of rain this year, dam levels in the Hunter have dropped from 96 per cent this time last year to 81 per cent today, while the Hunter's original water storage, Chichester Dam is at 58 per cent which is the lowest level it has been for 20 years," Mr Humphries said.

Mr Humphries andMr Cornwell provided residents at Parklane Villas with trigger nozzles. Hunter Water will hand out free trigger nozzles at: Bunnings Kotara (Saturday, July 12, 10.30am), Eatons Mitre 10 Cessnock (Saturday, July 26, 10.30am), Bunnings Belmont (Saturday, August 2, 10.30am).

Liles Oval scores new playing surface

DUDLEY REDHEAD UNITED

FOOTBALL CLUB

Lake Macquarie City Council has accepted a tender to upgrade the playing surface at Liles Oval in Redhead

• AMELIA PARROTT _ @amelia_parrott

Local cricketers and soccer players will be among those to benefit from a planned upgrade of Liles Oval at Redhead.

The $286,000 project will see the playing surface upgraded in an attempt to eliminate the drainage issues that have plagued the ground in the past.

Initially built on a filled area, the oval's poor soil structure has lead to water pooling on the site for extended periods, reducing usage and attracting vermin.

As part of the project, better quality soil will be added to the site, which according to Lake Macquarie City Council, will improve drainage and help save on irrigation costs.

Lake Macquarie councillors voted unanimously to accept the tender from the Green Horticultural Group at last month's ordinary meeting.

Labor councillor Kay Fraser said the project was a positive outcome for those who use the facility.

"It's pretty low and muddy in that area," she said.

"Saving in water will be a good outcome for that oval."

NEWCASTLE MATTERS

Embracing the spirit of the Games

From July 6-10, Newcastle will host the 2014 Eastern University Games (EUG), a celebration of camaraderie and sportsmanship showcasing Australia's talented university athletes.

Organised by Australian University Sport (AUS), the event will draw over 3,000 students from universities and TAFE institutes across NSW and the ACT. Bringing the EUG to our city is testament to the quality of sporting facilities and community support that Newcastle has to offer.

The Games have built up a reputation as an event not to be missed. 17 sports will be played throughout the city, providing opportunities for athletes and visitors alike to experience all that Newcastle has to offer and for our local community to get involved.

Sports on offer are expected to include AFL 9S, basketball, football, futsal, golf - singles, hockey, indoor cricket, lawn bowls, netball, oztag, squash - singles, surfing, tennis - singles, tenpin bowling, touch, ultimate and volleyball. Come out and enjoy the competition!

The Games will bring significant economic benefits as well, through the use of sporting venues, accommodation providers, restaurants, transport, and tourist attractions, bringing an estimated $1.7 million to our economy.

Newcastle's ability to host major events, such as the EUG and AFC Asian Cup 2015, has increased with recent and planned investment in transport and infrastructure and the development of the city as a desirable destination with restaurants, shopping, entertainment and night life. The city attracts over 3.6 million visitors annually with 24 per cent coming for meetings and conferences and around 10 per cent attending specific events, such as sports or cultural festivals.

Council is pleased to partner with organisations such as AUS and our own world-class University of Newcastle to support and enrich the lives of young people. The Eastern University Games will be run concurrently with the Northern and Southern Games as lead in events to the Australian University Games in Sydney from September 28 to October 3,2014.

LAKE MACQUARIE MATTERS

Transport Interchange plans move forward

The Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange is one step closer to realisation with the project's environmental documentation on public exhibition from this week.

The Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange is one of the key regional infrastructure projects for the Hunter Region. It will allow for significant jobs and economic growth in the Glendale and Cardiff area. However, it's critical that we balance this growth with any impacts to the local environment, which is why environmental documents have been developed and are being exhibited. The documents include detailed information relating to all potential environmental, economic and social impacts associated with the interchange and recommended measures to minimise any potential negative impacts identified.

The environmental documentation will be on public exhibition until August 8, 2014 and written submissions are invited until then. Public exhibition allows for community input, which may result in modifications and improvements to the project. You can be assured that Council will consider and respond to all written submissions received.

Once built, the interchange will be a major connection between Glendale and Cardiff, providing an important transit interchange to meet the future transport needs of the Lower Hunter Region. The project will see the installation of approximately 2km of new road, with improved intersections, and pedestrian, cycling and bus facilities. To complete this major project, an upgrade of Main Road and Glendale Drive will also be undertaken.

For more information on the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange, visitwww.lakemac.com.au/lake-macquarie-transportinterchange.

While I'm on the topic of jobs and economic growth, I am looking forward to attending the Lake Macquarie Business Excellence Awards this Saturday night. The awards are a fantastic showcase of the creativity and innovation of the businesses in our city. In advance, I congratulate all the category nominees and of course, the winners.

HEALTH

Why would an elghtyear-old feel fat?

Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The number of overweight children in Australia has doubled in recent years, with a quarter of children considered overweight or obese; and alarmingly it seems like some children are stressing themselves out about it and taking matters into their own hands.

A study shows kids as young as eight are dissatisfied with their bodies. And the majority of 10- and ll-year-olds are trying to control their weight. The report by the Australian Institute of Family Studies examined more than 4,000 children around the country. It found more than half of all the children they spoke to wanted a body size a bit thinner than the average.

A large number of eight to nine-year-old boys and girls were dissatisfied with their body size with many children wanting to be thinner than the average body size.

Why would an eight-year-old feel fat? It makes me wonder about the external influences our kids are subjected to from things like media ads, movies, tiny waisted Barbie dolls or the hugely muscled action figures.

Kids are sadly being guided on what is a 'normal' body type. Interestingly another study from the University of Oregon showed the more your kids know about fast food brands the more likely they are to be overweight. The relationship between brand knowledge and body mass index (BMI) is "quite robust" says the report.

Researchers tested children aged three to five on their knowledge of various brands, including their ability to identify fast food logos and found that those who could identify them the most tended to have higher BMIs.

Kids take in information constantly and can have difficulty separating fact from fiction. If you're not influencing the decisions and information your child learns and acts upon, there are plenty of companies too happy to help them make their mind up, and profit beats health on their priority list.

Some people, ncluding children can be exposed to the virus without developing symptoms

• MEDICAL

The facts on Hand, foot and mouth disease

In the last few weeks we have seen a number of children presenting with Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD).

HFMD is generally a fairly mild illness but one which is highly contagious. It is commonly caused by a virus and can result in blistery sores on the child's hands, feet and inside the mouth (on the cheeks, gums and tongue).

Although the virus can affect people of any age, it is most common for symptoms to appear in children under 10 years of age.

This may be because most older children and adults have already been exposed to the virus at some point in their lives and have built up some immunity to it.

Some people, including children, can be exposed to the virus without developing symptoms.

When symptoms do occur they generally begin as small red spots on the skin around the hands, feet and inside the mouth, that later develop into blistery ulcers.

Some children may also develop a fever, headache and sore throat, become tired and irritable, and may go off their food.

Generally symptoms last for about 7-10 days. There is usually no specific treatment for HFMD, however symptomatic treatment, such as paracetamol for fever, headache and sore throat, can be useful.

Like chicken pox, the liquid inside the blisters is highly contagious, as is the child's saliva, nasal secretions and faeces.

Because of this, the virus is very easily spread from child to child, and this is why outbreaks can occur in child care settings.

To help stop the spread, it is advisable for any child with HFMD to stay away from other children until the blisters have completely dried up.

It is also advisable to let your child's school or child-care centre know that your child has HFMD so that they can advise other parents to be on the look-out for symptoms and help reduce the spread of the illness to other children. If you suspect that your child may have HFMD you should speak

to your local doctor for advice, especially if fever or headache persists or if the symptoms are severe.

Savouring our city's gems

Tourists see a city differently to the people who live there every day.

Last week I got to see our city through a tourist's eyes as I accompanied friends from New Zealand around the local tourists spots and showed off some of my favourite parts of the city.

We have a beautiful city. A city full of natura 1 splendour and history, with plenty of special hidden gems if you know where to look.

Over the course of a few days I watched as our overseas visitors were impressed by our stunning coastline (both the ocean and the lake), as they enjoyed the vibe on Darby St and as they fell in love with the animals at Blackbutt Reserve.

As we travelled around the region I pointed out places and recalled the history I knew or the funny thing that once happened there.

As we journeyed up the Valley to the vineyards we talked about the subtle colour changes in the hills and the beauty of the rows ofleafless vines in winter.

Before they left we sat beside the harbour and ate a pie with mushy peas and watched an enormous ship go past. They gazed at something I barely notice and others call an eyesore.

Seeing how outsiders saw our city reminded me of the need to take time and appreciate the beauty we are so lucky to be surrounded by each day.

As our city continues to grow and change we must preserve the gems that make Newcastle what it is.

Newcastle Financial Planning

Time to review your insurance

It saddens me to share this story with you, but in doing so I hope some good will come out of it. Recently one of my colleague's friends, aged in his early 50'S had an accident which has resulted in him being diagnosed as a quadriplegic.

This person is married with two teenage children, self-employed, extremely fit, outgoing and loves the outdoors. But what really increases the severity and the sadness of this story is, that it appears he had next to no insurance or superannuation in place.

What's even more alarming is that as a nation we have the attitude 'that it won't happen to me', which makes Australia one of the most underinsured nations in the developed world. Only 31% of Australians have income protection, yet findings show that one in three working Australians are likely to become disabled and unable to work for up to three months before turning 65.

So, I am asking you to review your current insurance and ask yourself: Do you have enough accessible savings to cover your expenses for three months if you or your partner are unable to work? If something happened to the main income earner in your family, do you have enough life, income protection, total and permanent disability and trauma insurance cover to pay your mortgage in full and look after your family?

Disclaimer: This editorial provides general information only. Before making any financial decisions, consult a financial planner to take into account your individual needs.

Pharmacist of Piggott's pharmacies

Don't Ignore eye problems

A distressing, and to some degree avoidable, health statistic in Australia that every 65 minutes an Australian loses part or all of their vision.

Having a family history of eye disease puts you at greater risk of developing eye disease so it's imperative to ask relatives about your family's eye health history and have an eye check

The Eye Foundation advises that good eye health begins with regular testing from birth.

The first eight years of a child's life are critical for eye development because if problems are not picked up during this time, damage and vision loss can be permanent. One eye disease which older people become very aware of is glaucoma - the name given to a group of eye diseases where the optic nerve at the back of the eye is damaged. It is estimated that some 300,000 Australians are

affected by glaucoma but because there is usually no pain, and loss of sight is gradual, many people - perhaps as many as 50% - are just not aware that they have a very serious problem. Unfortunately, glaucoma can't be cured. Once there is damage to the nerve cells in the eye, it is irreversible. However, some of the serious consequences of glaucoma may be prevented if the condition is discovered early. Your pharmacist can also help you to select the right treatment for minor eye conditions like conjunctivitis and red eye. Your pharmacist will always refer you to a doctor if they feel the condition requires more attention.

Taldng a different approach to medication

R Oy Budaraju, pharmacist at Jon Dickson Pharmacy, Mayfield has a strong customer focus and a

special interest in natural anti-ageing and disease state management.

Roy is also a compounding pharmacist with the belief that each and every individual is different and that everybody's composition is different as well.

The dietary absorption from body to body is different. It depends on what gut-related issues they have. So there are different factors affecting different people with the same medical condition or nutritional deficiencies. Compounding pharmacies such as ours, work closely with doctors in identifying the deficiencies and help replace what is actually needed in conjunction with a standard treatment.

Menopause - from the age of 40 to 45 a woman's production of progestogen reduces and from around 50-55 oestrogen levels also reduce. But each and every individual is different.

Even 18 to 20 year olds can be deficient in these hormones, which causes a lot of problems, such as increased weight or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (pcaS).

There are a lot of creams and troches available, where the required hormones or nutrients can be replaced.

eompounded pain management - we can put together compounded tailor-made creams which can be applied in certain areas to block the pain, rather than taking standard tablets which can expose the liver and gut, which can cause codeine dependency. But again every case is different and we will work with a customer's doctor to ensure what is best for the management of their pain.

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (beG) weight loss clinic - this is a prescriptiononly weight loss program, where it actually targets the body fat by helping to melt it to produce energy while on a calorierestricted intake.

The fertility cliff: experts share the facts on conceiving after 35

find their soulmate until their 30S, so we encourage women to understand their fertility to make decisions that suit their situation?'

Other interesting findings included: • One in five women (20 per cent) incor

rectly believed it only became difficult for a woman to fall pregnant naturally in her late40s. N ewcastle's fertility experts are

encouraging women to get the facts on fertility, after a national

survey revealed more than half of respondents had surprising misconceptions about the impact of age ona woman's fertility and chance ofNF success.

The study of 1,000 Australian women of reproductive age, commissioned by HunterNF, NFAustralia, Melbourne NF and Queensland Fertility Group, part of the country's largest NF group Virtus Health, found 64 per cent of respondents didn't know their fertility rapidly declines from the age of36.

Of the respondents, 60 per cent also believed infertility in their 40S would be easily resolved if they underwent NF.

Dr Sue Winspear, a fertility specialist with HunterNF, said the results showed there was a critical information gap amongst women of reproductive age about how a womarrs age and her egg quality directly affected her fertility and chance ofNF success.

"It's a common misconception that women can delay motherhood until their late 30S and rely on NF to conceive in their 40S, and these survey results suggest that is exactly what many women may do;' Dr Winspear explained.

Freecall 1800 111 483 hunterivf.com.au

• While 80 per cent knew a pregnant woman in her late 30S and early 40s had an increased risk of having a baby with chromosomal abnormalities, 42 per cent did not know this age group also has an increased risk of miscarriage.

• 92 per cent of women knew that being overweight could affect their fertility, and 74 per cent knew that excessive alcohol consumption could also affect fertility.

Dr Winspear said for many, high school was the last time they received any education about their fertility.

Dr Sue Winspear, fertility specialist at HunterlVF

HunterlVF's New Lambton Heights-based fertility clinic

"These survey results demonstrate that some messages specifically around lifestyle factors such as weight and alcohol have hit home, however the increase in media stories of celebrities having babies in their mid-40s seems to have given people a false sense of security about their chances of falling pregnant later in life.

"The fact is we carrt improve the quality of a woman's eggs, and as a woman ages so do her eggs, and this impacts her chance of conceiving both spontaneously and with NF.

"We still have a long way to go to get the message through that 35 is a turning point in a woman's fertility.

"Delay can make things more difficult later on?'

''A woman has a 15-20 per cent chance of falling pregnant spontaneously per month at age 30, compared to less than five per

cent chance per month when she is in her 40S.

"Although NF is very effective and may markedly improve a woman's chances of having a baby - it is no guarantee.

"As someone who sees every day the challenges faced by women trying to conceive in their late 30S and early 40s, I am very aware of how important it is to support women in their quest to have a baby.

"The other complicating factor is that in today's society many women don't

"While we carrt do anything about the impact age has on a woman's fertility, we can provide women with the facts about how their age and health affects fertility, so that even if they're not ready to start their family now, they make informed decisions about their future?'

Bay plays well away • SAM BERRY

Nelson Bay recorded only their second away victory of the season with a 43-19 victory at cellar dwellers Lake

Macquarie. The result leaves Nelson Bay in equal 5th spot with Merewether.

The Greens were impressive in racking up a second consecutive away victory and all but ended Maitland's semi final chances. Inspired by returning fly half Blake Creighton, Merewether scored a 30-27 victory at Marcellin Park. In a tight game, Maitland were unable to celebrate captain Dan Runchell's well deserved 150th first grade cap in style.

Hamilton were too good for an understrength University at Passmore Oval. Missing six regulars due to holidays, the Students were no match for a rampant Hawks team who were dominant in their 50-24 win.

Unbeaten Wanderers were forced to work overtime when they defeated third-placed Southern Beaches at Allen Davis Oval. Trailling by three at the main break, Wanderers found the required spark through replacement Dillon Rowney who scored a brace in a second half barrage to run out 32-18 victors.

The Waratahs finally got their premiership defence back on track with a 57-31

win over local rivals Easts. Round 13 sees some intriguing match ups. Wanderers host University at No. 2 Sportsground. Nelson Bay will be looking to continue their imposing home record when they play third-placed Southern Beaches. Lake Macquarie face a daunting challenge away to The Waratahs. Maitland will have to upset Hamilton away at Passmore Oval if they harbor any ambitions of semi final football and Merewether Carlton face the always challenging and physical match up when they travel to Dangar Park to tackle Easts.

Gap opens at the top • PAUL MONFORTE

Another week of the Tooheys Cup saw Western Suburbs extend their competition lead to four points with a 28-20

victory over Lakes United at Cahill Oval on Sunday.

Mark Farrar, Lucas Miller, James Woolford, Callan Richardson and Simon Williams each scored a try for the Rosellas.

Second-placed South Newcastle's 25-18 loss to Central Newcastle at St John Oval on Sunday has created the extra gap at the top of the ladder.

Tom Morton, Jarrod Knott, Josh Neilson, Ryan Walker and Brett Jarrett all scored for the Butcher Boys with Steve Widders scoring two tries and kicking three goals for the Lions.

Cessnock bounced back from last week's loss to Kurri Kurri by thrashing Port Stephens 44-14 at Tomaree Sports Complex. The Brown brothers, Joel and Riley both scored twice for the Goannas.

Macquarie had a convincing 44-8 win over Kurri Kurri at Kurri Kurri Sportsground. Shane Beale crossed for a hat-trick for the Scorpions and Nathan Cantor notched a double.

o CRICKET Sheffield Shield cricket will return to New

castle next year with the announcement that the NSW Blues will play host to Western Australia at No 1 Sportsground from February25-28.

Council and Cricket NSW are in discussions around a longer term agreement which will see other major events and fixtures for Newcastle in future years, along with a plan to improve local cricket facilities. Newcastle Lord Mayor Cr Jeff McCloy said hosting a Sheffield Shield match is an exciting development for the city.

"This event will bring significant economic benefits to accommodation providers, restaurants, transport. and tourist attractions, as cricket fans journey to Newcastle to see this great match," said Cr Jeff McCloy.

"Hosting an NSW Blues match is a great opportunity to enhance the profile of cricket in Newcastle and to provide support to improve the infrastructure for grassroots cricket in the area. Council General Manager Ken Gouldthorp said Newcastle's ability to host major events, such as Shield Cricket. the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games last December, and the AFC Asian Cup 2015, has increased with recent and planned investment in transport and infrastructure and the development of the city as a desirable destination with restaurants, shopping, entertainment and night life.

Sims times two for Knights Powerful forward Tariq released by Cowboys to join brother Korbin at club from next year

• MATT LOGUE NEWCASTLEKNIGHTS.COM

Tariq Sims will join brother Korbin at the Knights next season after the Cowboys forward was released from his contract to sign a two-year deal

with Newcastle. Sims has played more than 60 games for North Queensland, represented Country against City, played for Fiji and selected as an Emerging Blue. "We are obviously really pleased to sign Tariq, a powerful and competitive forward;' CEO Matt Gidley said. "He comes to the club with plenty of football

ahead of him but also with a lot of experience. "Tariq will bolster our forward pack while also

playing a significant role in the development of our young forwards coming through the system:' The Knights also added to their playing roster

with the signing of Canberra Raiders forward Sam Mataora for the remainder of the 2014 season. Meanwhile, Newcastle five-eighth Jarrod Mullen says he is thoroughly enjoying life in the halves with skipper Kurt Gidley, admitting the new combination has given him the inde-

pendence to play his natural game. Mullen praised Gidley for helping him rediscover his best football in recent weeks.

"Kurt is definitely taking the pressure off me;' Mullen said. "He does a lot of talking out there and 1 can play my own natural game, so I'm loving playing alongside Gids at the moment:'

On the back of victories over North Queensland and Parramatta, the Knights have moved up to 14th position on the competition table after 16 rounds.

While a finals berth remains an unlikely reality, Mullen says the playing group hasn't given up hope of playing in September.

''We're starting to build a bit of confidence around the group after those wins;' he said.

"I thought it was a real tough performance against Parramatta and our defence really held strong.

"Our attack has still got a little bit of work to go, but as long as we keep competing like that we are going to be in most games.

''We know we can score points when we need to, but it's just a matter of holding onto the ball and defending our tryline.

The Knights are in action this Sundayafternoon against the Cronulla Sharks at Remondis Stadium. Kick-off is 3pm.
