While reflecting on one of my favorite movies, Men of Honor, which features Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Robert De Niro, I thought about the actor who played Cuba’s Dad in the movie. On the surface, it appeared that all he had to give his son when he left for the Navy was an old, broken-down radio that, perhaps, played two decent channels. Nonetheless, my inspiration became more enriched once the radio was broken, for inscribed on it was the acronym ASNF: A Son Never Forgets.

Truly, this resonates with the Young Men of Excellence program! Cuba depicted the heroic life of Carl Brashear, who was the Navy’s first African-American deep-sea salvage retrieval diver. Well – David, Phoenix, and Daniel can also co-sign that a son never forgets. David, far left, had to slay his Goliath of challenges, amid the catastrophic storms, as he arrived from Puerto Rico just two years ago. Phoenix had to overcome his suffocating ashes of grief from his father’s recent demise from cancer by the rebirthing and renewing of his mind while his twin brother Daniel had to face his inward lions that threatened to tear him apart as he tossed and turned on his pillow. The Crawford Twins’ father was a Navy Man, and Daniel desires to follow in his Father’s footsteps. These optimistic young men have an average GPA above 3.0. Their fathers poured the concepts of hard work, perseverance, and determination into the very fabric of their being, and the Young Men of Excellence program continues to nurture and cultivate their gifts and talents so that the world to come will be better than we inherited!

In addition, the Chief Architect, Mr. Robert Guy, the District Coordinator and Visionary in the middle, along with the Seminole State College Trio Group (Marsha McBryde/Summer Bernini) have partnered to take our future leaders to the state’s capital – Tallahassee, on December 1, 2017. They will tour Florida State University, FAMU, and TCC. It is one thing to dream and another to see it! This tour allows them to taste what’s to come. Indeed, this experience is something they will never forget!
