Joey Read’s 39-yard touchdown run three plays into the contest set tone for the Broncos, as they were able to hold the Tigers out of the end zone. Lake took home a 33-0 win over South. Zavier Wells’ 14-yard run set up Read’s 39-yard sprint to the end zone. Noah Day’s two-point kick was good to give Lake an 8-0 lead with 6:13 to play in the first quarter. Errant shot gun snaps and two fumbles halted South’s opening drive. A 25-yard punt set Lake up on a short field. Wells took care of busi- ness with the help of his offensive linemen, as his 12-yard carry set up his five-yard touchdown run. Day’s two-point kick gave the Broncos a 16-0 lead with 2:20 lead in the first quarter. Patrick Hart’s inter- ception on a third down and 20 at the South 17 at the end of the first quar- ter started Lake on their next drive at the Tigers’ 29-yard line, as the sec- ond quarter began. Jivan Phillips got the bulk of the work on the Broncos’ scoring drive, as he carried three times for 13 yards. It set up a 28-yard field goal by Day with 3:12 left in the first half to give Lake a 19-0 lead. John Moehlenbrock held onto a pass from his quarterback over the middle and took a shot for the Tigers, as they crossed into Broncos’ ter- ritory. However, Kaliyan Martin’s interception with 13 seconds remaining in the first half gave Lake a last shot at a score. Cypress Gutierrez intercepted Wells’ pass and returned the ball 60 yards but was knocked out of bounds short of the end zone to keep the score at 19-0 at the half. Read recovered a pooch kick at the South 42 to start the second half. However, the Broncos were not able to take advantage of the field position. Day’s 40-yard punt pinned the Tigers at their own five-yard line to start the next drive. On third down and three at the South 12, Zarious McGinnis inter- cepted the ball at the 23-yard line and raced into the end zone. The two-point kick was blocked, which kept the score at 25-0 with 1:30 left in the third quarter. South could not advance the ball past their own 31-yard line on the next drive and turned the ball over to the Broncos with 5:31 to play in the game. It was the first game of the 2020 sea- son for both teams. It was a tough first half, domi- nated be the Defense for both teams as the score was tied at 0-0. Lake opened the third quarter with the on-side kick and recovered it. They set up offensively at the Tigers 48- yard line. The Tiger defense stuffed Lake on the first play, for a loss of two yards. On second down, quarterback Wyatt Sawicki threw a screen pass to Dallin Beyler who picked up a block and broke two tackle’s on his way to a 50 yard catch and run for the games first score. The extra point failed and the score was Lake 6, South 0. After trading positions, the third quarter ended. The fourth quarter started with the Tigers running to the right and they were caught behind the line for a lost of 12 yards. On third down, the Tigers dropped back to pass and Josiah Evans tackle the South’s quarterback in the in zone for a safety. That increased Lake’s lead to 8-0 with 3:25 left in the game. Lake received the kickoff but, could not run out the clock and was forced to turn the ball over to the Tigers. With 50 seconds left in the game, the Tigers scored on a long 58- yard run. The score was Lake 8-Tigers-7 after the extra point. The Tigers attempted the on- side kick, Lake recovered the ball and secured the victory. The Offensive player of the game was Dallin Beyler and the Defensive player of the game was Josiah Evans. The Red team had the final game on the night. The final score of the game in favor of the Broncos 30-0. The offen- sive line blocked well all night opening up lanes for Nick Martin to gash the defense of the South Belton Tigers. Rushing touchdowns were scored by Damarion Powell, Sean McCallum, and Nick Martin. The defense had a stellar performance shut- ting out the Tigers. The Tigers looked to get the ball moving with Hudson Belobrajdic and La Ron Batts in the backfield, while the defense was led by Logan Lamberte and Jermey Smith. The Tigers fought for 4 quarters, but the Bulldogs proved to be too much for the defense as the Tigers dropped a heartbreaker 34-0. A-Team finished off the night taking on Carver Middle School in a thriller. From the opening drive, the Tigers were in complete control. Mon’Quavion Lawrence and Rayshaun Peoples dominated the run game, accounting for 3 total touchdowns. Keegan Sherwood connected with Hayden Holman and Lennin Malvaiz for 3 scores through the air. Bronco Nation was decked in gold, as Lake Belton hosted its first ever ‘Go Gold Night’ to bring awareness to Pediatric Cancer. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, which hits close to home for the Broncos. “Kaliece Cain, her brother had childhood cancer,” Ramsey said. “So their mom (Kari Norman) brought the idea to me. I’ve always done a ‘Think Pink Night’ in October (for Breast Cancer Awareness), but I love the idea of ‘Go Gold’... We pulled inspi- ration from around the district, but I’m happy we got to do something different.” Signs on the gym win- dows shared the stories of children who have been affected by pedi- atric cancer and those in attendance had the opportunity to purchase a fundraiser shirt with the proceeds going to Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Pediatric Medical Center. After a slow start in the first set, the Broncos kept the score close to open the second, as they tied the set twice with aces from Syndi Cartwright and Presley Pattrick. “I tried to motivate them with the fact that we’re in our home gym, these are our fans, we are here for a reason,” Ramsey said. “We need to use their energy and use all those things to win this next set.” The Broncos never let the Lady Eagles get too comfortable of a lead as they kept the score with- in three points. Down by two, 19-21, Lake Belton used its first timeout of the set. Out of the break, Salado added one more point before the Broncos went on a 5-0 run ignited by an ace from Danica Bingham and led 24-22, forcing the Lady Eagles to use their first timeout of the stanza. Salado tied the game at 24, but Cartwright’s defensive block at the net stopped Reese Preston’s attempted dink as the ball slipped back between the Lady Eagles and the net. Emily Evatt served up the game point and Haleigh Wilk tried to force the tie with an attack that landed out- side the court as the Broncos took the stanza. The Broncos fell in the third set, rallied back to take a close fourth set from Salado 25-22, but ultimately loss the fifth set.
