The Embassy of the Philippines in Vienna, in cooperation with the WeltMuseum Wien (WorldMuseum in Vienna) and the Wien Kultur (Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Vienna), organized the Philippine Night featuringthe dance performance of Lahing KayumanggiDance Company,UK-based Filipino dance troupe, at the WeltMuseum Wien, Hofburg Palace complex in Vienna on 5 September 2013. The said dance performance is partof the international dance festival in Vienna and the dance exhibition Getanzte Schöpfung Asien zwischen den Welten(Dance creation: Asia between the worlds) open from 17 April to 30 September 2013 at the WeltMuseum Wien.

The Zentrum für österreichische und philippinische Kultur und Sprache (Sentro ng kultura atwika ng Austria at Pilipinas) is the Embassy’s partner in facilitating the logistical support of the Wien Kultur (Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Vienna) for the dance performance of Lahing KayumanggiDance Company at the WeltMuseum Wien.

The Philippine Night was attended by the diplomatic community, business community,academe, museum patrons, the Filipino community in Vienna and the mainstream Austriansociety.

In her message, Ambassador Lourdes O. Yparraguirre expressed her thanks to the LahingKayumanggiDance Company for raising the profile of the Philippines in Austria through its thespian skillsand grace in showcasing the Philippines’ distinct music and dance to the mainstream Austriansociety. And for the Filipino community in Austria, the dance performance was sheer pride andjoyful celebration of the country’s rich cultural heritage. Dr. Steven Engelsman, Director of the WeltMuseum Wien, recognized the importance ofpresenting unique dance movements and techniques, specifically Asian dances like thePhilippines, to the Austrian publics. The dance programme is composed of five dance suites: Pattong (celebration), Suenos deEspaña(Dreams of Spain), Kini Kini(Maranao royal way of walking), Pagdiwata(prayer to the gods) and Buhay sa Bukid(Life in the fields). The dance repertoire were categorized from geographic localization, societalfunctions, dance influences, and time periods.

Lahing Kayumanggi Dance Company performs Suenos de Espana (Dreams of Spain), aSpanish-inspired dance repertoire, at the WeltMuseum Wien, Hofburg Palace complex inVienna on 5 September 2013. The Filipino community in Austria likewise participated in the dance performance. The leadersof the Council of Filipino Association in Austria (CFAA) performed the Rigodon de Honor, aform of quadrille which was brought to the Philippines during the Spanish era. Lahing Kayumanggi Dance Company, under the creative directorship of Mr. Ronnie Del Barrio,is a recipient of the Philippine Presidential Banaag Award in 2006 inrecognition of its unwavering dedication to artistic excellence, raising the cultural awarenessand ethnic pride of the Filipinos abroad and supporting cultural and humanitarian activities in thePhilippines. It is also a winner of the ABS-CBN Geny Lopez, Jr. Bayaning PilipinoAwards Europe in 2012. The Philippine Embassy also hosted a cocktail reception before the dance performance. Itserved chicken and shrimp spring rolls and puto at keso (rice cakes with cheese).
