Laguna Road School had a blast during Red Ribbon Week. We had outstanding participation by students and teachers! Students earned free items and discounts at local businesses by wearing their “Say No To Drugs” bands during the week. At school students won Chick-fil-A meals, wore clothes backwards, had crazy hairdos, and concluded the week with a DJ music lunch. Thank you to Mrs. Narhee Nguyen and her team for organizing a great week!

Laguna Road School Rocks By Participating in the 2012 Great ShakeOut Exercise.

Laguna Road joined millions of people to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:18 a.m. on October 18th in the 2012 Great California ShakeOut! Our school participates in this exercise to practice our emergency preparedness skills.

Drop

Why is important to do a Drop, Cover, Hold On drill? Just as with anything, to act quickly you must practice, practice, practice. In a big earthquake, there may be very little time to protect yourself before strong shaking knocks you down or drops something on you.

Most earthquakes have a sharp jolt a few seconds before the strong shaking, and we need to Drop, Cover, Hold On immediately when we feel the jolt. By practicing we will act quickly, rather than waiting to see if the earthquake will be large.

PTA President’s MessageHello Roadrunners! I hope everyone is comfortably nested in their classroom by now and is enjoying their journey here at Laguna Road Elementary. Do you feel “Distinguished” yet?

Our PTA Motto is “Working Together To Serve Our Children”, and that is what we have been doing since the school year started. We’ve been accumulating many volunteer hours in the classrooms, on campus, and running special programs geared to enriching our children's’ educational experiences. Here are some of the things we’ve been doing:

Our first Roller Skating Night was a big success with 130 skaters attending. Kids loved having their teachers skate with them! We raised $200 for our PTA programs while having fun.

The 2012 PTA Reflections Art Program, headed by Mrs. Sonal Thakker, closed with 137 entries. The theme this year was “The Magic Of The Moment”. Twenty-three entries were selected to compete at district level, and we will receive district results at the end of December. Thank you to our judges, and best of luck to our student contestants!

Our Korean Outreach, led by Mrs. Helen Kang, hosted a beautiful tea fundraiser on Nov 14th at Springfield Banquet Hall. Did you know the Springfield Banquet Hall and Tea room is owned by a Laguna Road family? We had a great turnout and a marvelous time. Thank you, ladies, for the exquisite Par-Tea.

Pathways of Hope, our PTA annual community service drive, started on Tuesday, November 13th and will run through December 7th. Please help us show that our school can make a difference in the lives of Fullerton families in need. Canned or nonperishable foods, toys, books, baby gifts and older children gifts are always the most needed.

Have you signed-up online for “Box Tops For Education”? All you have to do is shop through the Box Tops website, and out school gets a percentage of the total transaction. Mrs. Jennifer Morley is working hard to sign-up people, and our student council is collecting and sorting the box top cutouts. For your convenience, a collection box for cutouts is available in the front office.

Thanks to our PTA Executive Vice President Mrs. Nivie Jhawar, we will be introducing a new after-school program in January called Bricks for Kids/LEGO.

I would like to remind you that PTA meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 8:45 a.m. in the school library. We also offer a “Korean Outreach Group” which conducts the PTA meetings in Korean, and those meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 11:00 a.m. in the Pit. We are a fun, friendly group here at PTA, and we would love for you to join us.

Finally, please be aware the first day of school for the 2013-14 School Year will be August 12, 2013. Please consider that when planning your vacation this summer.

I’d like to wish each of you a very Happy Holiday Season and a delightful winter break. Thank you for your contributions and support to our PTA. Your opinion matters to us, and we would love to get your input. Let us all work together to serve our children!

Sincerely,

Helen Kharrat, PTA [email protected] 2012 Korean Outreach Par-Tea

News from yourPhysical Education Team

We would like to welcome our newest team member, Mr. Arnold Vaughn. He has jumped (literally) with both feet into being a vital part of the Physical Education program.

The 2012 Turkey Trot was a success on so many levels. The enthusiasm was high as our students ran and walked. Thank you to all the parents who helped to organize and to cheer our students on.

As we enter into cooler weather remember to have your child wear the proper shoes to physical education class.

Remember to stay active during our vacations. Take your family for an After the Turkey Walk (or waddle).

BE INSPIRED.

You Can Make a Difference.

Any one of us can make a difference by showing others it is better to give then to receive. Mia Jhawar (Mrs. Jeffries/Room 13) and Jaten Jhawar (Ms. Collins/Room 4) spent Saturday, October 13, 2012, helping others through community service. Here is their story:

It was really fun! We first met many Fullerton community members; like Rotary members, Fullerton Police Officers and the Chief of Police at the brand new Community Center. Then, we were assigned a project and off we went. Our special project was to help an elderly woman by cleaning up her front and back yards.

She had no one to help her, and she was not able to do it herself. After we put on our oversized gloves, our team started off by pulling weeds in the front yard. The weeds were 3 feet tall! We had to pull them pretty hard to get them out of the ground, and it was hard work. Then, we raked the weeds up into piles and loaded them into a yard waste bin. Once the bin was full, we dumped it into a big dumpster.

Our Dad helped carry the big tree limbs that were falling down, and our Mom helped clean up the pots and plants on the front porch. We worked for a few hours, and when we left, we felt really good because we had helped someone in need. Helping others is a great way to spend your day. We can’t wait to do it again!

LAGUNA ROADREACHING OUT Laguna Road PTA has a unique way to encourage our children to give back to their community. We invite all

students to join our new “Laguna Road Reaching Out”, a Community Service Program. Follow these three easy steps to participate:

Find a project that you can be passionate about. Be creative and have fun! Here are some ideas: • Read to residents at senior citizen

housing• Have a garage sale & donate the

proceeds to charity• Gather a few of your friends to pick

up trash• Organize a collection of gently used

toys/clothes for a charity, such as Pathways of Hope

• Help elderly neighbors take trash cans to the curb each week

Write a short account of what you accomplished (incl. location, time spent and a photo if possible). Submit to the office c/o Susan Levinson. Entries may be included in our PTA newsletter.

Share your ideas and efforts with your fellow students. Each month the teachers will make time for students to tell the class about how they made a difference in the lives of others.

This requires as little as one hour a month. At the end of the year PTA will recognize all those students who participated in the program. Please contact Susan Levinson (714) 931-7647 for more information.

You’re never too young to have a positive impact on your community!

You can help our school raise money by simply donating your fresh&easy receipts so we can turn them into cash! Laguna Road School receives $1 for every $20 on a receipt that we collect through December 31, 2012. Please put your receipts in the f&e collection box in the school office. Last year, we raised $500. Let’s do it again!

Our PTA earned money for our school by having a fun fundraising event on Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at our local fresh&easy store (1207 S. Euclid/corner of Euclid St & Orangethorpe Ave). We earned 5% of the total sales from 4pm to 8pm, and Laguna Road will receive a check for $442.79 from fresh&easy.

Thank you to our volunteers who made this event possible: Becky Kenrick (event organizer), Bobbie Tucker, Elliott Caballero, Shirley Ramirez, Steven Buck, Michelle Yoo, Helen Kharrat, Christina Kharrat, Angelina Kharrat, Anthony Kharrat, Raulna Yousling & her sister-in-law, Gabriela Mojica, Ramesses Valadez, Nicole Yi, Noah Yi, and Erin Yi.

The mission of Laguna Road School is to achieve educational excellence, in p a r t n e r s h i p w i t h p a r e n t s a n d community, to prepare all students, through the use of knowledge, skills and behaviors, to meet the challenges of t o d a y a n d t o m o r r o w. B e c a u s e technology continues to play an important role in modern industrial

society and technological integration is vital to ensure students’ success, the leadership of Laguna Road is developing a formal, long-term technology plan for the school.

The goal is to develop a 21st Century Learning Initiative that strengthens existing & proposed curricula and supports meaningful, engaged learning for all students based on the shared vision of administration, educators, parents, community members, and business leaders who have technological expertise,

Developing a plan for using technology to support education means more than providing for the acquisition of computers and software; as technology is merely a tool for supporting teaching and learning. A successful technology plan must promote meaningful learning; provide for the needed professional development and support; and respond flexibly to change. A Technology Planning Committee has been created and consists of representatives from all segments of the Laguna Road community.

Committee members are developing a plan vision, determining the goals that must be met to reach it, and creating steps to implement these goals. Estimated date of plan completion is February 1, 2013. Following are the committee members:

Help us show that our school “can” make a difference in the lives of Fullerton families!

It is time for our PTA’s annual community service project with Pathways of Hope formerly (F.I.E.S.):

• Please take the time to help by donating canned and nonperishable

food items and/or new unwrapped toys/gifts for our collection. New or gently used books and stuffed animals are also appreciated. (There is a great need for toys & gift items for babies and older children this year.)

• P.O.H. collection containers will be located at each classroom as well as by the front office.

• Tax-deductible contributions can also be made in the form of a check payable to: P.O.H. with a notation of “Laguna Road PTA” in the memo area. Checks can be turned into the school office.
