Limerick Day, May 12th

It filled Galileo with mirth

To watch his two rocks fall to Earth.

He gladly proclaimed,

"Their rates are the same,

And quite independent of girth!"

Then Newton announced in due course

His own law of gravity's force:

"It goes, I declare,

As the inverted square

Of the distance from object to source."

But remarkably, Einstein's equation

Succeeds to describe gravitation

As spacetime that's curved,

And it's this that will serve

As the planets' unique motivation.

Yet the end of the story's not written;

By a new way of thinking we're smitten.

We twist and we turn,

Attempting to learn

The Superstring Theory of Witten!

It’s National Salsa Month!

Cinco De Mayo

Cinco De Mayo c o m m e m o r a t e s t h e Mexican Army’s victory over the more numerous French troops in Puebla, Mexico, on May 5th, 1862. Napoleon III, the emperor of France, sent 6,000 troops to Mexico in his plan to extend his power in Latin America. When the French Army reached Puebla, they were met by 4,800 Mexican soldiers. Even though the Mexicans were outnumbered, they managed to defeat the French.

Today, Cinco De Mayo celebrations promote cultural awareness and are celebrated with Mexican food, Mariachi bands and dancers.

Celebrate the Nurses

Save one life, you’re a hero. Save 100

lives, you’re a nurse. ~Anonymous

Our job as nurses is to cushion the sorrow

and celebrate the joy every day, while we are “just doing

our jobs.” ~Christine Belle

You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a

person, I guarantee you, you’ll win, no matter what the

outcome. ~Patch Adams

I attribute my success to this — I never gave or took any

excuse. ~Florence Nightingale

Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen every day. ~H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Nurses are angels in comfortable shoes. ~Author Unknown

Face your def ic ienc ies and acknowledge them; but do not let them master you. Let them teach you patience, sweetness, insight ...

When we do the best we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another.

The “Run for the Roses” takes place on May 5th-8th. About 1.5

million people will head to Louisville for the big event!

Medical Memo: May is National Mental Health Month

There are many different conditions that affect

mental health, such as depression, dementia,

anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and

schizophrenia. It’s often hard for those who aren’t

familiar with mental illness to imagine it. But it is

estimated that every year, about 61.5 million

American adults suffer from some mental illness.

Mood disorders such as depression are the

third most common cause of hospitalization in the

U.S. for both youth and adults ages 18 to 44.

Individuals living with serious mental illness face

an increased risk of having chronic medical

conditions, and adults living with serious mental

illness die on average 25 years earlier than other

Americans, largely due to treatable medical

conditions.

Over 50 percent of students with a mental

health condition age 14 and older who are served by

special education drop out − the highest dropout

rate of any disability group.

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in

the U.S. (more common than homicide) and the

third leading cause of death for ages 15 to 24

years. More than 90 percent of those who die by

suicide had one or more mental disorders.

Although military members comprise less than

1 percent of the U.S. population, veterans represent

20% of suicides nationally. Each day, about 22

veterans die from suicide

Approximately 18.1% of American adults −

about 42 million people − live with anxiety

disorders, such as panic disorder, obsessive-

compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress

disorder (PTSD), and phobias. About 9.2 million

adults have co-occurring mental health and

addiction disorders.

But there is hope! Great strides in

neurobiology and pharmaceuticals are promising a

brighter future for those plagued with mental

illness.

No one knows exactly how many species there are. Scientists have identified at least 1.9 million animal species, and possibly millions more have yet to be named.

Only the Indian elephant can be trained. The African elephant has never been domesticated or trained.

The tongues of all dogs are pink, except for the Chow, which has a black tongue.

A crocodile weighing 120 pounds exerts a force of about 1,540 pounds between its jaws. A human being’s jaws exert a force of only 40 to 80 pounds.

Aim for the moon. If you miss, you may hit a star.
