What do I need to do to get started? We recommend you follow the 4 simple steps below to support students’ independent use of Amplify Reading.

1. Retrieve student login information If you teach 5th or 6th grade, follow the instructions in this video (https://youtu.be/WzGMaM_wa5w) or outlined below to generate, access and print your students’ usernames and passwords. You’ll need this information to fill out the login cards. We also recommend you print a copy and post it in your classroom so students can reference it at any time.

3

Step 1You should have received an email about your new mCLASS credentials. This is your unique teacher username and password that gives you access to student credentials and all of your reporting tools.

Step 2Log in to mclass.amplify.com. Note: If you ever forget your credentials, go to and click “Forgot Password?” to retrieve or reset that information.

Page 4: Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) Welcome to Amplify ...€¦ · Student login cards contain all the information a student needs to know to use Amplify Reading each day it’s

4

If you teach 7th or 8th grade, your students will login with Clever as they normally do. There is space in the login cards for you or your students to write their Clever credentials as a reminder.

Step 3Click on the “Admin” Icon.

Step 4Navigate to the “Classes” tab and click on any student in your class.

Step 5Click on “Student Logins” and then “Create All” to create credentials for all students who do not have them.

Step 6Once created, you can download your students’ login information as a CSV or use the “Print All” button to generate a PDF. Note: Please disregard the URL in the right-most column of the print out.

Page 5: Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) Welcome to Amplify ...€¦ · Student login cards contain all the information a student needs to know to use Amplify Reading each day it’s

3. Print your classroom schedule The classroom schedule contains the same information as the student login cards. We recommend you print these instruction sheets and hang them near where your devices are kept or where students typically work on Amplify Reading so they can reference it at any time. Consider putting student login information there as well.

See pages 24 and 34 of this guide for a set of these resources.

4. Print classroom bookmark instructionsTo support independent navigation in Amplify Reading, we recommend you print this bookmark instructions resource (see page 18 of this guide) and advise students to create a bookmark to my.amplify.com on their first day using the program. Consider hanging this near where your devices are kept, where you hang the classroom instruction resource, and/or where students typically work on Amplify Reading so they can reference it at any time.

5

2. Prepare your student login cardsStudent login cards contain all the information a student needs to know to use Amplify Reading each day it’s assigned. There are cards for each grade and each semester of the school year. Consider having students affix their login card to an index card and/or keep all students’ login cards in a single place in your classroom.

If you teach 5th or 6th grade, print as many sheets as you need for your class(es) and fill out the username and password section for each student. We recommend you review the information on the card with your students at the start of each semester.

If you teach 7th or 8th grade, print as many sheets as you need for your class(es). We recommend you review the information on the card with your students at the start of each semester.

See pages 18 and 28 of this guide for a set of these resources.

When should my students use Amplify Reading? We have created weekly model schedules for each grade and for each semester to support use of the program for three days a week during your 30-minute intervention blocks. The model schedules were designed to support the following goals:

● 1st Semester: Students will focus on practicing important precursor skills required for reading, comprehending, and engaging in close reading of grade level texts.

● 2nd Semester: Students will focus on close reading of on-grade level texts, as well as continuing vocabulary practice, independent reading, and comprehension practice activities to support their ability to grow as readers and succeed on assessments.

6

How should I introduce my students to Amplify Reading? We recommend you take the following steps at the start of each semester to ensure students understand the various aspects of the program and how to navigate between them.

1. Post the bookmark instructions and classroom schedules near where your devices are kept or where students typically work on Amplify Reading. Consider also posting student login credentials there as well.

2. Distribute student login cards.

3. Have students practice logging in and navigating through Days 1-3 so they feel confident with the program structure and how to access each component. This initial practice is crucial in ensuring students understand how to use the program independently.

a. Play this overview video (https://youtu.be/WNfZUOunP9M) for your students to support this step. It shows them how to log in, how to make a bookmark, how to navigate between components, and how to log out.

4. On a daily basis, you may want to use a timer to support students’ navigation through each aspect of the program for days in which they use two.

The Digital Library comprises more than 650 classic and contemporary fiction and nonfiction books in their entirety. The collection spans a wide range of genres, topics, and cultural perspectives—a diversity meant to support students as they develop literacy skills. The titles have Lexile levels spanning grades 4-12, providing books for students with varied reading abilities.

Becoming a reader is learning to engage with the wealth of rich, complex texts in the world. That’s why it’s so important to know how to close read. As well as being key to college and career readiness, close reading instruction is linked to gains in reading proficiency and self-perceptions around reading, especially for struggling readers.

Our Close Reading experience builds these skills using high-quality texts, carefully crafted questions, and technology-enhanced items like you’d find in high-stakes assessments—all wrapped up in a compelling, interactive graphic novel experience. Students experience this content through three books, which align to grade-level standards (Book 1 = 6th grade content, Book 2 = 7th grade content, Book 3 = 8th grade content.)

Amplify’s Vocabulary Practice focuses on high-utility curricular vocabulary likely to occur across disciplines— commonly referred to as Tier 2 vocabulary. These words are important, because students are more likely to see them during their reading; they’re often related to concepts students understand; and they’re not typical in conversational language.

Our Vocabulary Practice uses synonyms and antonyms as well as words in context to help build students’ deep word knowledge and teach students to recognize the context clues embedded in short passages that provide meaning-related information for unfamiliar words.

What will my students see in Amplify Reading?Amplify Reading is a digital reading program for grades K-8 that leverages the power of compelling storytelling to engage students in reading instruction and practice. Whether students are just learning to read or mastering close reading, Amplify Reading helps students achieve true mastery of the concepts they need to become strong, lifelong readers.

Your unique Amplify Reading experience is comprised of several components that students will rotate through each week. Each instructional method is designed to engage, challenge, and support your students.

How can I see student progress throughout the year?Amplify’s dashboards display student progress throughout the year and include tools for you to change the various differentiation tracks and supports each student receives. We recommend you review student progress periodically throughout each semester. You can access each dashboard and learn more about their features by following the instructions below.

In the second semester, 6th-8th grade students will have the opportunity to tackle Practice Passages. These provide students with multiple “at bats” with question types and formats that appear on state assessments. This large bank of text comprehension passages consists of both fiction and informational works, including excerpts from primary sources such as letters and speeches.

When students access this component for the first time, they find themselves in this mysterious Workshop. There are four areas in the workshop that each house a specific type of skill practice, outlined above. Students are guided through these areas by a quest narrative that sequences the various types of activities for them. The content your students have access to in this portion is aligned to 4th and 5th grade skills and standards.

Additional Resources for DifferentiationAmplify Reading was designed to adapt and support students as they use the program. The program also includes a number of ways for teachers to adjust content for additional differentiation. If you’d like to further differentiate content for your higher- and lower- performing students, as well as for English learners (ELs), consider these following methods for additional differentiation:

Amplify Reading Season 3 (5th-6th grade)Enable practice mode to support students reading significantly below grade level. Enabling practice mode allows students to play any level of any skill game, from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Consider using Practice Mode to direct individual students to specific skills you'd like them to practice outside of the quests. Enable practice mode for a specific class in the teacher dashboard. Students can then access practice mode by tapping the Menu icon in the upper right hand corner of the workshop. From here, games can be filtered by skill.

14

Page 15: Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) Welcome to Amplify ...€¦ · Student login cards contain all the information a student needs to know to use Amplify Reading each day it’s

Close Reading (6th-8th grade)Assign English learners and students reading below middle school level to the Extra Support (ES) track. Amplify Reading 6-8 includes two learning tracks. The Core level is designed for students whose reading levels fall within the middle school band, while the ES level is designed for students who are reading below middle school level or with limited English proficiency. To place students in the ES track, go to Reporting and look at the icon next to each student's name. All students will be automatically enrolled in the Core level (CO). Reassign them to the Extra Support track by clicking on the level icon next to their name. Make sure it says “ES” for Extra Support when you are done. You can change a student’s level at any time, and they will begin the next Chapter in the new level.

Vocabulary Practice (6th-8th grade)Assign ELs, below-grade, and above-grade level students to differentiated vocabulary streams. Each grade has three streams of vocabulary words: Core (default), Substantial (for below-grade readers), and Challenge (for above-grade level readers). Additionally, the program has four “gradeless” streams for ELs: Emerging, Expanding, Bridging, and Academic. To change a student’s stream, click on the 🔽 next to their name and re-assign them. Students will automatically progress to a higher stream once they master all of the words in their current stream (e.g., Substantial -> Core; Emerging -> Expanding).

15

Page 16: Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) Welcome to Amplify ...€¦ · Student login cards contain all the information a student needs to know to use Amplify Reading each day it’s

Digital Library (5th-8th grade)Recommend books at your students’ “just right” Lexile® level from the Amplify Digital Library. The Amplify Digital Library provides students the opportunity to browse and choose books that are interesting to them. It offers books with Lexile® scores encompassing grades 4–12 and includes books in Spanish. As a teacher, filter by Lexile® score to recommend specific books to your students for independent reading.

If you continue to feel like the content is not at the right level for your student(s) or want help navigating these additional differentiation opportunities, please reach out to [email protected].
