Introduction

Dear Colleague,

Welcome to Ladywood Teaching School’s Continuing Professional Development Programme for the Spring/ Summer 2016 term.

We offer CPD which is creative, collaborative and focused on making an impact for pupils. We aim to challenge and engage participants, encourage collaborative learning and develop reflective practice. All our work is Quality Assured by the Teaching School.

In addition to the courses listed in this booklet Ladywood Teaching School is able to design and co-ordinate bespoke courses/programmes specific to your school’s needs.

Our wider Alliance works in partnership to deliver high quality support for teachers and leaders at all stages in their careers. This includes Teaching and Learning Programmes, Leadership Development and School to School support including designation and deployment of Specialist Leaders of Education.

We also work closely with local universities and teacher training providers in the recruitment and professional development of trainees through our School Direct Programme.

We hope you will find this booklet useful and look forward to welcoming you at one of our courses.

All programmes can be booked as a bespoke package for whole school staff training. Please contact the Teaching School for further details.

Cancellations

A cancellation must be made at least 3 weeks prior to the event date otherwise the following charges will apply.

Cancellation Period Charge

• If you cancel between 10 and 15 working days of the course commencement date. 50%

• If you cancel a course within 10 working days of the course commencement date. 100%

None attendance without prior notice will always be charged at the full rate. For all cancellations please notify Ladywood Teaching School on 01204 333400.

Ladywood reserves the right to cancel any course/programme due to insufficient numbers up to 7 days prior to the course/programme start date; any fees paid will be refunded in full.

The organisers reserve the right to make reasonable modifications to the programme without prior notice.

Code OTP 8 Outstanding Teacher Programme

Description: OLEVI’s OTP provides good (and outstanding) teachers a set of high level skills and strategies that enable them to become consistently and sustainably outstanding. A ten week course focusing on a range of aspects of teaching and learning such as challenge, engagement, assessment, differentiation, questioning and planning. There are linked practical tasks back in your own school including applying what you learn and observation in host schools. There is one and a half days coaching element within the 10 week programme.

Target Audience: Teachers that are consistently ‘good’ or borderline ‘outstanding’ that have the capacity to evaluate and develop their practice into ‘outstanding’ teachers.

Course Date: The course includes 2 full days and 5 half days at Ladywood, in addition to 3 sessions to be completed in your own setting.

Code OTAP Outstanding Teacher Assistant Programme

Description: The Outstanding Teaching Assistant Programme is for teaching assistants who are, or who have the potential to be, outstanding in their roles. It is intended to develop the potential for Teaching Assistants to have a wider impact on improving the quality of teaching and learning across the school. Designed and facilitated by experienced school leaders and teachers the OTAP forms part of the OLEVI Teaching & Learning Syllabus which has gained a national reputation for raising standards in teaching and learning.

Target Audience: This programme is for teaching assistants who are, or who, have the potential to be outstanding in their roles.

Course Objectives: OTAP enables teaching assistants to:• place a greater emphasis on the purpose and value of the lessons

they support• raise levels of engagement and achievement in learning• use different methods and styles of support to challenge learners• innovate and take risks• have a bigger impact on the planning and assessment for the

learners they support• demonstrate a higher level understanding of teaching and learning• be able to coach colleagues to raise performance

The programme focuses on a range of aspects of teaching and learning such as challenge, engagement, assessment, differentiation, questioning and planning. There are facilitated practical sessions and lesson observations at the host school, with linked practical tasks back in the participant’s own school to apply what they learn.

Description: An introduction to what autism is and how it affects the children you work with. You will have the opportunity to explore a wide range of strategies to support pupils on the spectrum from nurseries to transition in Year 6.

Code ASD DP5 ASD - A Deeper Persepctive

Description: A follow on from ‘ASD an Introduction’ to deepen knowledge of ASD and the impact this has on pupils social and academic progress in school. The course will review prior knowledge of ASD and include information about the 3 main psychological theories to further highlight and explain the difficulties that pupils with ASD experience and underpin the often inappropriate manner in which pupils may respond in different situations. This course will also highlight appropriate strategies to meet the social and academic needs of pupils with ASD so they can be fully included in the mainstream setting.

Requirements: It would be useful if delegates have previously attended ‘An Awareness of ASD’ or similar.

Code CSV5 Communication Strategies & Use of Visual Supports

Description: Explore the use of purposeful communication strategies, which will help identify and support those children who have difficulty in participating and engaging in learning. Explore interaction, questioning and enhancing your learning environment through the use of effective communication methods. By the end of the session all delegates will have had an opportunity to broaden knowledge of purposeful communication strategies that can be implemented immediately into daily practise.

Target Audience: Primarily aimed at Teaching Assistants however SENCO’s and Class Teachers may also find it useful.

Code SLCNS5 Speech Language and Communication Needs Strategies

Description: An introduction to SLCN and supporting strategies in the learning environment. During the session delegates will become familiar with the difficulties associated with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and know how these impact on children’s learning inside and outside of the classroom.

Delegates will become aware of the terms associated with SLCN and know how to identify the different aspects of SLCN e.g. receptive, expressive and semantic pragmatic language needs. The course will highlight some general classroom strategies to help support children with SLCN including whole class approaches, intervention programmes and the use of multi-media so staff feel confident to meet the needs of children with SLCN in their settings.

Description: Lego Therapy is an intervention to support the development of language skills. In Lego(c) Therapy pupils work in teams to build Lego (c) models, developing their language skills as they do. In this practical session you will learn how to prepare for, facilitate and assess Lego (c) Therapy sessions.

Code D4SS Drama 4 Social Skills (New Course)

Description: Drama 4 Social Skills is a programme that uses drama, visual resources and a clear structure to support pupils with ASD and SLCN needs to develop their social skills. In this interactive half day course you will train to be able to deliver, assess and adapt the programme to the needs of young people in your setting.

Description: This programme provides an introduction to Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia and Irlen Syndrome. The session will include identification of such SpLD’s, the difficulties presented and suggested strategies for inclusion in the classroom.

Code QC5 The Quiet Child

Description: This programme provides an introduction to the profile of a quiet child. During the session delegates will be introduced to the differences between selective mutism, reluctant communicators and shy / quiet children. The session will highlight the impact that shyness and quietness can have on the progress of children. The delegates will be introduced to appropriate strategies to help support quiet children in their learning and social environment so that they feel more comfortable and become more confident in their communication and learning.

Description: TP @ Secondary is a 2 day course aimed at understanding the language and communication needs of pupils with additional needs at Secondary School level. The training consists of understanding how to deliver the 10 week intervention speaking and listening programme - TP@Secondary.

In the training there is opportunity to become familiar with the programme materials and activities and know how this can be successfully delivered back in the school setting including assessment and evaluation thus measuring impact.

Supporting pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL)/International New Arrivals (INA)

Description: This one day package is aimed at providing practical stategies to classteachers and SENCO’s on how to support children with EAL/INAs. Itwill include approaches for whole class, small group and 1:1 teaching oflanguage development. Implementation of intervention programmes willbe discussed and opportunities to observe both teachers and teachingassistants working with children with EAL/INAs will be providedthroughout the day.

Partner Workshops

Pikes Lane School is committed to raising pupil attainment and developing arts provision by supporting teachers and arts practitioners. Our CPD workshop is aimed at Primary School Art Coordinators, leaders and Classroom Teachers from EYFS through to Key Stages 1 and 2. The workshop is delivered by our specialist teacher and Head of Creative Arts. It is specifically tailored for all abilities and experience levels. It focuses closely on what subject coordinators and teachers can do to provide an outstanding curriculum and teaching and ensure they meet the requirements and expectations of the new programmes of study.

The CPD Workshop will take place at 4pm to 6pm ‘Wed 9th March 2016, in the Creative Arts Studio, Pikes Lane Primary School, Gibraltar Street, Bolton, BL3 5HU.

The workshop includes a variety of tasks and practical ideas for the classroom covering ways to introduce: Drawing & Painting, ICT, 3D Sculpture, Collage, Textiles and Printing, all with the aims of: • Ensuring Coverage and long term planning within the new programme of study. • Planning a sequence of lessons to ensure effective progression. • Thematic Planning and how to maximise links to topic or theme.• Assessment Strategies and ensuring pupil progression through school. • Using Specialists: Finding, evaluating and utilising practitioners in a cost effective way. • Practical Activities: What should an exemplar project look like from start to finish?• Effective Arts Week: What can be done to ensure that projects are relevant and have impact? • Arts Mark: an update on the newly published Arts Mark criteria. • Reducing the costs of resources, specialists and internal CPD.• Evaluating and action planning for development. There will also be an opportunity to make links with other schools and to sign up for a ‘multi -school showcase ’. Refreshments will be provided as well as extensive handout materials. The cost of the course is £50 for individuals (and £30 each participant, if attended by more than one member of the same school).
