The army is more important than healthcare, science, art, or anything else a country can make. At this time period, many countries believed in militarism. They had huge armies and navies—and wanted to prove their strength. Imperialism Imperialism is the idea that a strong country should try to take over other countries to make itself stronger. America was an imperialist country at this time—just fifteen years earlier, they had taken Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. America wasn’t the only one though—many European countries were trying to get more land, or colonies. Germany wanted more colonies because it was jealous Alliances An alliance is when two people or countries agree to help each other. Every major European country had an alliance by 1914. Russia and Serbia had been friends for a long time. Meanwhile, Germany had made an alliance with Austria-Hungary to protect itself from France. Nationalism Just as racism is believing that one race is better than another, Imperialism was causing some countries to hate each other. For example, Austria-Hungary took over a land called Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, Serbia believed that land should have belonged to Serbia because many Serbs lived there. Militarism

Militarism is the belief that military power is the most important goal for a country. The army is more important than healthcare, science, art, or anything else a country can make. At this time period, many countries believed in militarism. They had huge armies and navies—and wanted to prove their strength.

Imperialism

Imperialism is the idea that a strong country should try to take over other countries to make itself stronger. America was an imperialist country at this time—just fifteen years earlier, they had taken Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. America wasn’t the only one though—many European countries were trying to get more land, or colonies. Germany wanted more colonies because it was jealous of how many France and Britain had. If it could win a war, Germany could take those colonies.

Assassination

On June 28th, 1914, a Serbian nationalist named Gavrilo Princip shot and killed Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. In response, Austria-Hungary wanted to declare war on Serbia. Austria declared war on Serbia, but Serbia’s allies declared war to protect Serbia. Austria-Hungary’s allies declared war to protect Austria-Hungary. In a few months, the most powerful countries in the world were at war with each other.

Alliances

An alliance is when two people or countries agree to help each other. Every major European country had an alliance by 1914. Russia and Serbia had been friends for a long time. Meanwhile, Germany had made an alliance with Austria-Hungary to protect itself from France.

Nationalism

Just as racism is believing that one race is better than another, nationalism is believing that one’s own nation is the best. Nationalism means feeling pride and loyalty for your country. People at this time loved their countries and wanted to prove their nations were the best.
