TSARSKOYE SELOARISTOCRATIC AGE

Why not to see the gilded luxuries of Russian Tsars summer residences and feel the royal air. You will see the Golden Enfilade of the charming baroque Catherine’s palace and restored Amber Room.

Tsarskoye Selo was the home of the Imperial family from the days of Peter the Great until the time of the last tsar, Nicolas II. It is a fascinating monument of world architectural and gardening art of the 18th and 19th centuries with a beautiful English-style park.

The center of the ensemble is the Catherine’s Palace, presenting exquisite objects d`art, furniture, paintings and unique collections of porcelain, amber and bronze.

The Tsarskoselsky Lyceum, an elite school established in Russia in the early 19th century is next to the palace. The greatest Russian poet Alexander Pushkin wrote his first masterpieces within the walls of the Lyceum.

Russian Restaurant

A meal in a traditional Russian restaurant is an essential item on the itinerary of most visitors to St. Petersburg. While there are numerous delights to be discovered in Russian cuisine itself, it is as much the ceremony and atmosphere, most often deeply nostalgic, that attracts visitors and locals to St. Petersburg's best Russian restaurants.

Café-Restaurant Europe is located in a building that is well-known among the residents of Pushkin Town as the Villa of Maria Patkul, Imperial Maid of Honour and the author of the memoirs about Russian autocrats. Café-Restaurant Europe is a five-minute walk away from the main entrance to the Catherine Palace, and it is one of the favourite visiting places for residents and guests of the town alike.

If there is available space, invited pianists and observers can register until July 1.

The best choice for arrival and departure to St. Petersburg involves a flight to Helsinki, Finland. Both FinnAir and IcelandicAir offer excellent service. (Pricing is surprisingly inexpensive.) A bullet train departs from the Helsinki airport, and arrives in St. Petersburg in approximately 3.5 hours. This train offers various classes of service and a dining car.

Repertoire choices can vary but must be approved by Dr. Smith and forwarded to the festival in advance. For the concerto with chamber orchestra option, the concerto movement must be performed at a very high level, and should be suitable for performance will a smaller orchestra. The extra cost for performance with the orchestra will be determined by May 1 depending on the number of participants performing concertos. Other ensemble opportunities include duets or playing a movement of a piano trio or quartet instead of the concerto.
