It is true that the illegal trade in exotic skins threatens the environment and the survival of several species in countries that have a poor regulation in the matter. We feel that the best way to combat this illegal trade is to abide scrupulously by all the CITES regulations and support its work, to refuse to bargain with suppliers offering cheap but undocumented skins and to educate people where possible, to beware of cut-price exotic skin products, which will almost certainly result of illegal trade. By conducting our business in an ethical manner, we may have smaller profits, but we know that we are helping with conservation efforts throughout the world, making sure that animals in the wild are protected and bringing our customers products of the highest quality that have been produced with respect to the animal life and the environment.
In conclusion, when properly managed, according to the CITES regulations, the farming of exotic skins makes a huge contribution to the preservation of the habitat and of the species. It provides employment and supports the economy of many places that have few other incomes to support themselves. It feeds millions of families and when well managed is no less humane than any other animal husbandry such as cattle and sheep farming. It is an unfortunate reality that in our world humans are encroaching on the natural habitats of many animals, the ones that have an economic value for us; following the regulations they have a better chance of surviving, simply because people have incentives in their conservation.
At Laddu we know that well-managed farming and ranching actually helps conservation efforts and has a positive effect on wild populations. We support all the carefully drawn regulations of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora). We take great efforts to ensure that all our leather come from regulated and well-managed producers that farm the animals sustainably and that each skin we use has full documentation and provenance info. We are convinced that the production of the skin we use has a positive effect both on local economies and on the conservation efforts of the countries that they come from. We’d like to share some more information about farming and trade in exotic skins with you.
The regulation of trade in exotic skinsThe legal trade in exotic skins requires strict documentation at all stages of the process from export of the raw skins to the making and selling of the finished product. There are taxes and fees to be paid at each stage, and this money helps funding organizations that are actively involved in protecting many species of animals under threat of extinction. In this way funds are raised to fight illegal trade and the poaching of animals in the wild, to raise awareness among the public and to encourage more countries to enforce the regulations protecting threatened animals in the wild.
