WHITBY WARRIORS DEFENDTYKE A TITLE FOR THIRD YEARIN A ROWThe Warriors opened the scoring with a goalby Captain, and scoring leader for the game,Jack VanVolsen. The Braves responded withone of their own, but the Warriors scored fourmore to end the first period with a 5-1 lead. TheWarriors logged another goal in the secondperiod, but the Braves battled back with threegoals, diminishing the Warriors’ lead to 6-4.VanVolsen reinforced the Warriors lead earlyin the third period with his third goal of thegame, which was followed up by two moregoals from Keegan Bernier and Aidyn Urback.The Warriors took their third straight Tyke AProvincial Title with a 9-5 win in the final.

The Six Nations Warriors took on theOrangeville Northmen, who went undefeatedin round robin play, for the Tyke B ProvincialChampionship title. Orangeville took the leadin the first period, logging three goals to theWarriors’ one. The Warriors staged a come-back in the second period, however, tying thegame 5-5 with goals from Kamren Powless,Dayton Martin, and two from Andrew Ver-meulen. The Warriors shut the Northmen outin the third period, with Vermeulen scoringhis third and fourth goals of the game to pushhis team ahead for the 7-5 victory.

The Kahnawake Mohawks faced the Clar-ington Gaels 2 for the Tyke C ProvincialChampionship title, looking to redeem twoyears of losses in the Tyke C final.

Though the Gaels 2 took a 3-2 lead after thefirstperiod, theMohawksfoughtback withfourgoals in the second period to make the score 6-4intheir favour.Trenton Bonneveld struck earlyin the third to bring the Gaels 2 within one pointof the Mohawks, but goals by Shatekaienthon

Vandommelen and Owen Rice solidified theMohawksvictoryinan8- -5finalscore.

The Tyke D final took off between theOshawa Blue Knights 2 and the NepeanKnights 2, ending in a close 4-3 win for the BlueKnights 2. Holden Ranta opened the scoringfor the Blue Knights 2, scoring 5:30 into thefirst period. Miller Kay responded for theKnights 2, to tie the game 1-1 at the end of theperiod. Oshawa shut out Nepean in thesecond period, and scored another goal tostretch a 2-1 lead. The Blue Knights 2 scoredagain early in the first, but the game was tiedup by Kay who scored his second goal of thegame with 2:17 left. Dylan Waduck logged hissecond goal of the game with 41 seconds leftto play, breaking the tie to give the BlueKnights 2 the game winning 4-3 lead.

The Toronto Beaches 2 came from behindin the third period to win the Tyke E Provincialfinal against the Gloucestor Griffins, 6-4. Theteams tied the first period 1-1, and the Griffinspulled ahead in the second with an early goalby Rowan Toner.

The Griffins scored again early in the thirdperiod, but the Beaches 2 pulled ahead 4-3with three goals in just over three minutes.Zachary McLean logged his second for theGriffins to tie the game, but the JensenRichards and Alex Pho scored their secondgoals of the game for Toronto, to bring homethe Tyke E provincial title with a 6-4 win.

NOVICE FINALSSHOWCASE DOMINANT PLAYBY CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMSThe Whitby Warriors 1 fought back after aheartbreaking loss in the 2013 Novice A finalto win the 2014 title over the OrangevilleNorthmen, 10-3.

The Warriors made their presence knownright off the bat, scoring seven goals in the

first period to take the lead 7-2. MatthewPoitras scored two of his three goals, andEthan Lee scored his first of two, and assistedon three goals through the period. The War-riors shut the Northmen out of the second,collecting another goal to go into the thirdwith an 8-2 lead. Though Orangeville’s LiamMatthews logged another goal for his team,Lee and Poitras scored one each to solidify theWarriors’ 10-3 championship win.

The Kahnawake Mohawks battled theNiagara Thunderhaws for the Novice B title,the club’s second victory of the 2014 OntarioLacrosse Festival. Though the game stayedclose in the first period, Trey Deere edged theMohawks ahead, 4-3, in the last minute ofplay with his third straight goal of the period.The Mohawks scored another three unan-swered goals in the second period to extendtheir lead to 7-3. The Thunderhawks brokethrough the Mohawks defense in the thirdperiod, with two goals by Kris Wilson, andone by Mitch Berg, but their efforts were toolate. The Mohawks matched the Thunder-hawks three goals in the third, pulling furtherahead to take the match 10-6.

The Novice C final was played between theInnisfil Wolfpack and the NorthumberlandNemesis, both teams who went undefeatedin round robin play. The teams remained tied2-2 in the first period until Northumberland’sDalyn Wakely struck with four seconds left,scoring his first of five goals in the game. TheWolfpack was unable to make a mark in thesecond period, while Wakely notched twomore goals to stretch Northumberland’s leadto 5-2. Logan Palomaki scored one goal for theWolfpack in the third, but Northumberlandscored three more goals to take the game 8-3.

The Six Nations Warriors 2 took on theHamilton Bengals in the Novice D ProvincialChampionship final, ending the first period ina 4-4 tie. The Bengals struck first in the secondperiod with a goal from Jayden Harrison, andthe Warriors’ 2 Nicholas Thomas respondedwith the team’s only goal in the period. TheBengals’ offense was not finished, however,scoring three more in the period to end thesecond in the

lead, 8-5. Ryan Hess Jr. diminished the leadto 8-6, with a Warriors 2 goal early in the third,but the Bengals reinforced their lead with twogoals of their own to win the game, 10-6.

The Oshawa Blue Knights 3 faced off

against the Akwesasne Storm 2 in the NoviceE final, a rematch of an earlier round robingame in which the Blue Knights 3 won 6-3.They continued their dominance in the final,shutting the Storm completely out until thelast five minutes of the game. The BlueKnights 3 took an early 3-0 lead in the firstperiod, with goals from Mason Carley, LiamPrior-O’Dette, and Colby Dowdle.

Nathan Hutchings extended the lead to 4-0 with a goal early in the second period.Akwesasne 2 captain, Camrin King- -Gormanretaliated near the end of the final period witha goal assisted by Dawson Lazore. The BlueKnights 3 were too far ahead to catch, as theylogged another goal with 1:46 left in thegame for a final score of 5-1.

The Lincoln Crush struggled to work aroundtheir team’s 52 penalty minutes in their finalmatch against the Orillia Kings 2 for the NoviceF Provincial Championship title. Jackson Gerrardopened the scoring for the Kings, snapping offhis first of three goals in the game to take thelead 1-0 going into the second period. The Kings2 continued to assert their dominance, scoringfour more in the second period. Dylan McFaddenlogged his team’s only goal with 39 seconds leftin the period for a score of 5-1. The Kings 2 shutout the Crush in third period, scoring three moregoalsto takehomethenoviceFtitleinan8-1win.

LAST PERIOD HEROICS TAKE OVERIN PEE WEE CHAMPIONSHIPSFOR EXCITING FINISHThe Hamilton Bengals and Guelph Regalsfaced off in the Pee Wee B Provincial Cham-pionship final after both teams sailed throughthe round robin match- -ups with a 3-0 record.The Bengals proved too strong however,scoring three in the opening period and onein the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Regals’

offense was stifled in the first two periods,only scoring one goal by Marcus Keleher inthe third. Thomas Richardson and WinstonBashford notched two more for the Bengalsin the last half oftheperiod,solidifyingtheir6-1 Provincial Championship win.

After struggling through the round robinplay with a 1-1-1 record, the PeterboroughLakers 2 battled for the Pee Wee C Provincialtitleagainstthe2-0-1Mimico Mountaineers 2.The Lakers took the early lead, scoring two inthe first period to the Mountaineers’ one.Though Owen Simpson briefly tied it up witha goal one minute into the second period, theLakers responded with one of their own tomake the score 3-2. Mimico collected anothergoal, but Shane Cooligan and Frank Coyleextended the Lakers lead 5-3 at the end of thesecond. Merrick Sands poked his second pastthe defense, and Reagan Martinell his first, tofinish the game 7-4 and collect the team’s PeeWee C Championship.

Kahnawake staged a third period flurry inthe Pee Wee D Provincial Championshipagainst the Northumberland Nemesis, to takethe title 6-4. The Nemesis scored two in thefirst period to the Mohawks one, and extendedtheir lead to 4-1 in the second, with goals fromSam Clements and Curtis Martin. Dean Bras-coup jump-started the comeback for theMohawks, scoring the team’s second goalwith 7:12 left in the third period. TheMohawks would go on to score three more inapproximately four minutes to take a onegoal lead, and Brascoup capped their victorywith a final goal in the last second of play fora 6-4 final score.

The Arthur Aces took on the Sun CountyCrows in a battle for the Pee Wee E ProvincialChampionship title at the 2014 OntarioLacrosse Festival. The Aces shut the Crowsdown until the third period, logging in threegoals to take a 3-0 lead.

Aiden Barrina scored in the first, and JabeVerbeek popped two off in the second.Though Jordan Gualtieri scored one for theCrows in the third, two more goals by theAces locked in their Pee Wee E 5-1 victory.

The Lincoln Crush and Awkesasne Storm 2met for the second time that week in the PeeWee F Provincial Championship final. Lincolntook their first match-up in the round robin 7-4 and went undefeated in regular play. TheCrush opened up the scoring quickly in the

first, logging four goals while the Storm man-aged two. The Crush ran away with the gamein the second period, scoring five more goalsand shutting out the storm. Aidan Vitucci andHunter Oakley logged their third goals each.Awkesasne’s penalty minutes also began tobuild in this period, combining for a final totalof 37 to Lincoln’s eight. Treyton Sunday scoredhis second goal in the third period, but theCrush was too far ahead to catch. Chase Cuth-bert snapped in his third of the match for afinal score of 11-3.

BANTAM CHAMPIONSHIPGAMES PROVIDE EXCITINGLACROSSE AT THE 2014ONTARIO LACROSSE FESTIVALThe Newmarket RedBirds 1 won a nail biter ofa final against the Halton Hills Bulldogs 1 forthe Bantam B Provincial Championship titleat the 2014 Ontario Lacrosse Festival.

Though the Bulldogs took the early lead,with two goals by Ryan Lawrence and EthanKerr, the Redbirds came back to tie it, withgoals by Owen Grant and Dante Romano inthe last minute of the first period. The teamscontinued to match each other goal-for- goalin the second period, with the Bulldogsscoring three over the Redbirds’ two to takethe lead 5-4. Romano came out strong in thethird, scoring his third goal of the game,leading the come-from-behind charge for twomore goals to take the lead 7-5. The Bulldogsmanaged to score in the last minute and ahalf of the game, but were unable to produceanother goal to give the team a second life.Having only lost one game in round robinplay, the Redbirds took home the Bantam Btitle with a dominant showing at the festival.

The Welland Raiders, who had gone unde-feated in round robin play, faced off againstthe Toronto Beaches for the Bantam C title.

The teams kept the score close, collecting twogoals each to finish the first period locked ina tie. Jakson Raposo scored his second of thegame early in the second period to put theBeaches up by one, but it was not to last. TheRaiders responded late in the period with twogoals by Spencer Proulx and Tanner Main.Though the Beaches momentarily tied thegame with an early shot by Declan Conlon,Ardis Peterson re-established the Raiders’lead. Marcus Ottaviano capped it for theRaiders with a final shot for a 6-5 victory,their best finish since their loss in the 2011semi-finals.

The Kahnawake Mohawks faced the New-market Redbirds 2, the only team to beatthem in round robin play, in the Bantam DProvincial Championship final. The Redbirdstied the game 2-2 in the opening period afterthe Mohawks struck first with two goals byTetioronhienisere Diabo and AenenharotonPatton. Patton scored once more, his secondof five in the game, extending the Mohawkslead by one at the end of the period. TheMohawks continued their dominance in thesecond, scoring three goals to the Redbirds’one, making it a 6-3 game in their favour. TheRedbirds surged back in the third, with threegoals to come within one point of the leaders,but were unable to break ahead. Pattonscored his fifth and final goal with two sec-onds left in the game, solidifying the BantamD Provincial Championship title.

The Nepean Knights 2 defeated theCentre Wellington Mohawks 2 in a thrillingovertime victory to defend their Bantam EProvincial Championship title. Both teamswent undefeated in round robin play. TheKnights beat last year’s finalists the SooSpartans 7-2 to make it to the finals, and theMohawks overcame the Guelph Regals 2, 6-2. Going scoreless through the first period,Centre Wellington broke the silence two anda half minutes into the second with a goalby Austin Roberts. The Knights regained thelead shortly after with goals by Braden Lib-erty and Dawson Reid to make it 2-1. Theyquickly extended their lead with a goal earlyin the third, but the Knights came back withtwo goals of their own, tying it with 1:24 leftin the game. The stand-off did not last longas Reid logged his second goal, securing theKnights repeat 4-3 win, with 9:16 left inover-time.

MIDGET D CHAMPIONSHIPSENDS WITH THRILLING DOUBLEOVERTIME VICTORYThe Midget Provincial Championships tookoff with a battle between the NewmarketRedbrids and the Sarnia Pacers for theMidget B title.

The Redbirds shut out the Pacers until thethird period, creating a considerable leadearly in the first.

Felix Cote struck first for the Redbirds,scoring two goals in just over one minute totake the lead 2-0.

Will Sirman, assisted by Devlin Kauffeldt,scored a goal two minutes later, and JohnBuchan snapped two more past for the Red-birds, to take the lead 5-0 at the end of thefirst period.

Though Logan Scott logged a goal for thePacers with six minutes left in the third period,Sirman solidified the Redbirds’ win, scoring hissecond goal of the game for a 6-1 final score.

The Whitby Warriors 2 took on the BarrieBombers in the Midget C final; a rematch oftheir final round robin game, which the War-riors won 5-4.

The Warriors 2 took control of the gamequickly,scoringthreegoalsinthefirst period,andshuttingouttheBomberstotakethelead,3-0.

Wyatt Craik and Keegan White opened thesecond period with their second goals of thegame, topushtheWarriors2 furtherahead,5-0.

The Warriors 2 struck early again in thethird period, with Craik logging his third goalof the game, and Matt Abramczuk scoring onefor a 7-0 lead.

Will Lynch scored the Bombers’ first goalof the game with three minutes left to play,but the Warriors 2 had too large a lead tomake up any ground.

The Warriors 2 took the Midget C title witha dominant 7-1 final score.

The Huntsville Hawks and New TecumsethRenegades matched skills in the grinding

double overtime Midget D final, after bothgoing undefeated in regular play.

The Hawks opened up the scoring in thefirst period, with a solo shot by Cody Purvisto take the lead 1-0.

TheRenegadesretaliatedinthesecondperiod,with a goal by Preston Kopp to tie the game.

The teams matched goals in the third, holdingthe stalemate to send the game into overtime.

Matthew Wadge broke through with 5minutes left in the first overtime to give theRenegades a one goal lead.

Purvis struck with 3:35 left, however, tyingthe game again and forcing a second suddendeath overtime to settle the title.

Both teams remained defensively strong,but The Renegades’ Captain, Carson Grandyscored a lone goal, his second of the game, toend the match and take the title, 4-3.

NIAGARA THUNDERHAWS EDGEPAST MILTON MAVERICSIN INTERMEDIATE A FINALMilton went 2-0-1 in their first year in the A divi-sion, while Niagara went 2-1 0 to make it into theplayoff round. Both teams dominated theirsemi- -finalgames, eventually coming to meeteach other in the final. The Thunderhawksstruck first with two goals from John Wagnerand Brandon Kraemer, ending the first periodwith a 2-1 lead. The teams matched goals in thesecond, scoring two each to make it 4-3 for theThunderhawks. The third remained scoreless,and the Thunderhawks took home their firstIntermediate A title.

The Peterborough Lakers and the LondonBlue Devils faced off in the Intermediate Bfinal, a rematch of their close round robingame in which the Lakers beat the Blue Devils4-3. The Lakers played a dominant game, shut-ting the Blue Devils scoring down until thethird. Peterborough scored one in the firstand two in the second to take the lead 3-0.The Blue Devils staged a comeback in the third,

scoringthreegoals to tie the game with 2:47 left.Peterborough’s Kenny Murduff scored hissecond almost 20 seconds later to take back thelead, but the Blue Devils managed to force over-time with a goal in the last minute of play byCarter Hastings. The hard fought match cameto an end at the 6:45 mark when Kealan Ryan,assisted by Murduff, scored the game-winninggoal tohand the Lakers their championshipwin.

After playing each other in their first gameof the tournament, the Wallaceburg Griffins andOshawa Blue Knights met again in the Interme-diate C Provincial final. TheGriffinstooktheirlastmeeting 8-4, and continued to dominate thetournament, going easily undefeated in regularplay. While this initial game was the BlueKnights onlyloss,theytiedanothergame5 5withMarkham Thunder heading into the playoffs.Both teams scored one in the first, but it was theGriffins who broke out in the second to take thelead. They blasted two goals in four minutes,and the Blue Knights’ Vinton Gaskin respondedwith his own to make the score 3-2 for theGriffins. The Griffins logged two more to putthem up 5 2 going into the third period. ThoughWallaceburg’s scoring was tempered in the third,the Blue Knights were unable to stage a come-back, and Wallaceburg took home their first everIntermediateCvictorywithafinalscoreof6-3.

INTERMEDIATE B AND C FINALSGET GIRL’S BOX OFF TO GREATSTART AT FESTIVALThe Girls Box Lacrosse finals marked thehalfway point of the 2014 Ontario LacrosseFestival, with the Intermediate B and C finalsheading up the group.

The Orillia Kings battled it out for the Inter-mediate C title, in their first year of existence,against the Sarnia Pacers. Sarnia took the earlylead in the first, ending the period up 2-1 withgoals by Jada Henry and Krystal Adair. ThoughBridget Folk extended the lead with a goal

early in the second, Orillia battled back, withshots from Kennady Blunt and Madison Valle,to tie it up 3-3 going into the third. The Kingslocked in their first Intermediate title with a tie-breakinggoalbyMarah Robersonwith fouranda half minutes to go, for a final score of 4-3.

The Clarington Gaels fought for their club’sonly title at the Festival, trumping the Wal-laceburg Griffins 6-2 in the Intermediate Bfinal. Though Megan Seed notched two goalsin the first and third for the Griffins, they wereunable to keep up with the intense offensivepressure of the Gaels. Julia DeVouge scoredthe Gaels opening goal in the first period,tying the game 1-1. The Gaels tore away fromthe Griffins in the second with goals fromMackenzie Clements, Zoe Chad, and two fromRachel Dowdall. Seed’s effort in the thirdcame all too late as Clarington’s Krista Laingpopped off another goal with 32 second left,solidifying the Gaels’ 6-2 championship win.

The Whitby Warriors defended their Inter-mediate A title, defeating the PeterboroughLakers in a 3-1 showdown. Though it was Peter-borough’s Kristen Kehoe who opened up thescoring early in the first, the Warriors exertedtheir dominance late in the game after a score-less second period. Taylor Milburn, assisted byKaylyn Roach, tied the game three minutes intothe third period. Amanda Kernohan followedup with a goal of her own, assisted by KennedyMilburn, to take thelead2-1.RachaelMcKinnonextended the lead with 31 seconds left in thegame to deliver the Warriors second straightIntermediate A provincial title.

Abby Clayton lead the Centre WellingtonMohawks through their 5-3 victory against lastyear’s champions, the Whitby Warriors, in theGirls Midget A Final. The

Warriors took the early lead in the firstperiod with three goals, two by Captain, Kris-tine Webber and one from Samantha Gates.The momentum switched hands in thesecond,however,as theMohawksbattledback toa one- -point differential with goals from AbbyClayton and Taylor Collins. The Warriors stillhad the lead late in the third until Claytonlogged two goals at the 3:21 and 1:17 marks totake the lead 4-3. The Warriors were unable toretaliate, and the Mohawks solidified their 5-3win with a goal by Collins in the last minute.

The Hamilton Bengals won the GirlsMidget B Provincial title for the second year ina row, defeating the Nepean Knights in a close

2-1 battle. Summer Belanco scored both of theBengals’ goals, logging her first at the 7:47mark in the opening period.

Jennica Klassen brought the Knights backwith a last second blast in the first to tie thegame 1- -1 going into the second. The tie wasbroken by Belanco with two and a half min-utes left in the second, and the score wouldhold to the end of the game to deliver theBengals’ second straight win.

The Girls Midget C final took place betweenthe Kitchener-Waterloo Braves and NiagaraThunderhawks. The Braves took an early leadwith a cluster of goals scored mid-waythroughthe first. Jenna Brown scored two a minute andahalfapartwith assists from Taylor Cloutier andCaitlyn McGivern. Cloutier scored her team’sthird goal with two and a half minutes left inthe third period. The Braves extended their leadto 4- -0 in the second with a goal from MeganFergusson who was assisted by Brown andCloutier. Though the Thunderhawks tried tomake a comeback in the third with a two goalrun by Julia Ruscio, they failed to break throughthe Braves defense in enough time to diminishtheir early lead. The Braves brought home the Ctitlewitha4-2finalwin.

The Kingston Krossfire Bantam A team bat-tled back after a loss in the finals at the 2013OntarioLacrosseFestivaltobeattheWhitbyWar-riors 4-1 in the 2014 Provincial Championship.Captain of the Krossfire, Clare Johnston, scoredher first of threegoalswith6:18 left in thefirst totake the lead 1-0. The Warriors’ MacKenzieDennis tied it up with two minutes left in theperiod. The Krossfire reasserted their domi-nance in the second, as assistant captain RachelBrayton logged the period’s only goal. Johnstoncontinued her hot streak, scoring two in thethirdperiodforafinalscoreof4-1.

Team Captain, Adelle St John lead the LondonBlue Devils to the Girls Bantam B title, scoringthe team’s only goals in the final game for a 3-1win. St John opened up the scoring late in thefirst, with an assist by Mackenzie Deleary, to takea 1-0 lead. She continued to assert her domi-nance in the second period, scoring her secondgoal unassisted, to extend the Devils’ lead byone. She scored her third unanswered goal in thethird period, with an assist from Marrissa Smoke,to solidify her team’s place as the Bantam BProvincial Champions. Kitchener-Waterloo’sSamantha Kudoba scored one with 28 secondsleft in the game to make the score 3-1. OLM
