Lab Lab Work 3: Machine Raw Material

Objectives After completing this lab you will be able to

Retrieve 4 raw materials from ASRS.

Perform machining process to 4 raw materials.

Describe the functions of all components in the process.

Components GMI’s CIM System.

IntegraXor SCADA software.

PLC S7-1200.

RFID tag and scanner

Introduction The process starts by retrieving raw material from ASRS station.

The raw material is then brought to milling station via conveyor

where the robot will transfer the raw material to the milling

machine. The robot then will transfer the processed material back to

the conveyor.

GMI’s CIM

System

The system is developed

by Bistanika Sdn. Bhd.

And engineered by

Ecava Sdn. Bhd. The

system forming the

Computer Integrated

Manufacturing in

virtual environment as

teaching aids tools that

provide assistant for

instructor/lecturer

conducting the CIM

class session and

platform for students to

involve interactively

through the system.

The system consists of a

SCADA server, Main

PLC panel, 2 robots,

main workstation, a flat

screen TV, 5 remote

PLCs and 4 web client

workstations which are

connected to a local area

network (LAN).

Procedure

1 Requesting single-station mode for ‘Machine Raw Material’

1.1 On the main SCADA page, click ‘Remote’.

1.2 Click ‘Store Raw Material’ button to open the page of that station.

1.3 Click ‘Request’. The request can be approved from the SCADA page at the main

workstation.

2 Retrieving raw material from ASRS

2.1 Make sure the PLC of the station has powered up and transparent symbol sheet of

‘Mode 02’ is applied, PS4, PS5, PS6 and PS7 button is turned on, and ID of all 4

materials available in the ASRS (observed through SCADA page).

2.2 If the request has been approved, click ‘Remote start’ to start the operation.

Observe the PLC indicators and the SCADA page, what happened to the PLC

outputs?

2.3 The robot now should have moved to the ASRS to pick up the first raw material. Turn

off PS4 to indicate that the robot has picked raw material from X1Y1. Observe the

outputs.

2.4 Turn on PS8 to indicate that the raw material is now on the conveyor. Observe the

outputs.

3 Transfer raw material to manufacturing station

3.1 Now the raw material will be moved to the manufacturing station. Turn off PS8, Turn

on PS9 to indicate the material is moving through the RFID scanner and then scan

the RFID tag that matched the ID number of material stored in X1Y1.

3.2 Once the ID number of the raw material is displayed at the scanner (On SCADA

page), turn off PS9 and turn on PS10 to indicate that the raw material is now

proceeds to the manufacturing station. Observe the output.

4 Milling process

4.1 Now the robot will start to transfer raw material to the milling machine. Turn off PS10

and observe ‘Milling Station Status’ on your SCADA page and explain what happen

to the robot and the milling machine before and after milling process is done.

4.2 Now that the processed part is on the conveyor, turn on PS10 again to indicate that

the material is now on the conveyor. Observe the output.

4.3 The process stops here. Now the processed material can proceed to station

‘Assembly’, ‘Barcode Printing’ and ‘Unloading’. When the process at all stations has

completed, repeat step 2 to 4 for the next raw material. Repeat until all 4 raw

material is processed.

5 Discussions and report

Write a brief report about the exercise above. Your discussions should include the process layout of the

system, flowchart of the process, description of the process from start to finish, and explanation of the

functions of Conveyor, Vision System, Industrial Robot, RFID Scanner, ASRS , and Milling Machine in

the system and suggest 1 alternative component that can perform similar functions.
