QUANTITATIVE FILTER PAPERS
Quantitative filter papers are recommended for quantitative analysis. As quantitative analysis requires a high puri-
ty, quantitative papers are washed out with acid.
We offer two grades of quantitative filter papers – ashless and ashless hardened. Our ashless grades are made for
100% cotton linters with an ash content of 0,007%. The ashless hardened grades are made of pure cellulose with
an alpha cellulose content of almost 100%. The ashless hardened grades are wetstrengthened.

QUALITATIVE FILTER PAPERS – low ash
These extremely pure filter papers grade 120H to 5 are produced of pure cotton pulp. Grade 11–20 are produced
with an alpha cellulose content of almost 100%. Types 11–14 correspond in their filtration properties to our
quantitative papers No. 1–4. The ash content for the grade 120H to 5 amounts to about 0,06%. For Grade 11–20
the ash content amounts to <0,1%.
Grade 11 to 14 are wetstrengthened. Grade 15 and 20 are slightly wetstrengthened.

GENERAL PURPOSE FILTER PAPERS
These papers are made for general purpose filtration. Their ash content is so low that they can be used for ordi-
nary qualitative filtrations. They are filter papers for a variety of different applications with very different basis
weights. The development of these papers was keyed particularly to their final use. This is documented by the
different surface structures. The papers are made of very pure cellulose with an high alpha cellulose content.
Average ash content of the these filter papers is 0.1%.

FOLDED FILTER PAPERS
With folded filter papers the whole of the surface area is available for filtering, thus increasing the loading capacity.
The flow rate is also improved because less of the filter paper is in contact with the inside of the funnel – time is
saved in preparation. We offer folded filter papers for qualitative and for general purpose filters.

CHROMATOGRAPHY AND BLOTTING PAPERS/MEMBRANES
CHROMATOGRAPHY PAPERS
Made of pure cotton linters. Produced with an α-cellulose content of
almost 100%. Graduated by basis weight and absorption capacity.
P In order to obtain reproducible measurements, work should alwaysbe carried our in the direction of the fibres.
P Therefore the capillar rise is always sligthly higher in this directionthan opposite.
P A drop of water on a square will indicate the fibre direction.
P The bigger elliptical diam. of the spot is the indication of the fibredirection. Other sizes upon request.

CHROMATOGRAPHY AND BLOTTING PAPERS/MEMBRANES
BLOTTING MEMBRANES
NITROCELLULOSE has a very favourable combination of high protein binding and low background. If you also
add its ease of wetting you can easily understand its popularity in blotting techniques.
Our 0.2 µm membrane is the standard material for protein blotting. The 0.45 µm membrane is commonly used for
nucleic transfers and colony/plaque transfers.
For multiple reprobing of nucleic acid blots SUPPORTED NITROCELLULOSE (NC-Support) is the best choice as
standard nitrocellulose has a limited physical strength. The polyester support does not have any effect on the
wetting and binding charateristics. NC-Support is also preferred for repeated colony transfers and UV-crosslinking
of DNA.
The POLYAMIDE MEMBRANES are normally used for transfer and immobilization of nucleic acids.

The theoretical basis for determining pH values
For the chemist, determining the concentation of
hydrogen ions (H+) is of extreme importance, because
the progress, balance and speed of very many reac-
tions largely depend on it.
Hydrogen-ion concentration is also of interest to bio-
logists, the medical profession and to technicians,
because, on the one hand. H+-ions may be involved in
reactions under the physiological conditions in which
biological processes occur, or may act as their
catalysts, and, on the other, hydrogenion concentration
has an important part to play in other areas such as
corrosion, for example.
Applying the law of mass action to the dissociation of
water gives us:
(1) K = [H+] · [OH––]
or (2) [H+] · [OH––] = K · [H2O] = 10–14 (at 20°C)[H2O]
This equation applies to perfectly dilute solutions. Hence, the concentration of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in
water is 10–7 = 1 n10.000.000
In 1912, Sörensen introduced the pH value as the negative decadic logarithm of the hydrogen-ion concentration.
The following equation applies:
(3) pH = –lg [H+]
The acidic and basic properties of aqueous solutions are defined by the following parameters:
acidic solutions [H+] > 10–7 mol/l; pH < 7
neutral solutions [H+] = 10–7 mol/l; pH = 7
basic solutions [H+] < 10–7 mol/l; pH > 7

MICRO FILTRATION
CELLULOSE NITRATE MEMBRANE FILTERS
Cellulose ester membrane filters are used in a wide variety of analy-
tical and laboratory procedures that require filtration. The cellulose
nitrate membrane filters is hydrophilic and has uniform pore sturctu-
re over a wide range of pore sizes and therefore is recommended for
sample pretreatment, particle testing and removal.
These membranes have a high non-specific adsorption
which makes them suitable for many blotting procedures
and for diagnostic kits. The adsorption decrease with
increasing pore size.
Sterile individually packed membrane filters are standard
for routine microbiological quality control. Filter identifi-
cation and lot number are printed on each individual
envelope. In our production each membrane and envelope
is checked.
All gridded membranes are made of cellulose nitrate, which assures excellent retention and colony growth. The
grid size is 3.1 x 3.1 mm and can be supplied in black, white and green grid. White membranes with black grid
and green membranes with dark green grid is used for colony counts. Gray/black membranes with white grid is
used for detection of yeasts and moulds. White membranes with green grid ist used for E.coli and coliforms.
In our programme you can also find gridded and sterile membranes with a pink-coloured hydrophobic edge for
sterility testing.
We also offer non-sterile gridded membranes in standard packs for particle counting and microscopy.

REGENERATED CELLULOSE MEMBRANE FILTERS
The regenerated cellulose membrane filter is chemically
resistant to allmost organic solvents and to aqueous solu-
tions in the pH range 3–12.
Regenerated cellulose membranes have low non-specific
adsorption which make them suitable for filtration of biolo-
gical solutions. They are also recommended for filtering
HPLC and mobile phases.

PTFE HYDROPHOBIC MEMBRANE FILTERS
The PTFE membrane filter is naturally and permanently
hydrophobic. It permit the passage of air and gases and it
does not become blocked with humidity. If it should be
used for filtration of aqueous solutions, it must be pre-
wetted with a solvent before water passage can occur.
PTFE membrane filters are ideal for venting applications,
phase separations, aerosol samplings and gas filtration.

NYLON MEMBRANE FILTERS
Nylon membrane are both hydrophilic and chemically resi-
stant to most bases which makes them very suitable as
particle-removing or sterilizing filters for alkaline solutions.
Good compatibility with many solvents and aqueous sam-
ples makes them an economical choice for clarification of
the mobile phases for HPLC.
The high adsorption and good mechanical strength makes
them useful for blotting techniques, such as transfer and
immobilization for nucleic acids.
For applications such as sterilizing filtration of tissue cul-
ture solutions they are not recommended. For such appli-
cations you should use cellulose acetate membranes.

GLASS FIBRE PREFILTERS
In general glass fibre filters have an open structure with a
large available surface area and filter depth. Compared
with a membrane they have a high dirt-loading capacity.
Because of the high dirtloading capacity they are often
used to protect membrane filters, giving an excellent
throughput and absolute retention.
We offer three different grades – with and without binder.
Filters without binder are recommended for analytical and
gravimetric analysis, and for the prefiltration of relative
clean solutions such as tissue culture media.

PTFE CAPSULES
High air flow rates of the membrane and large filtration area allow effective sterile venting at low differential pres-
sure.
As PTFE is extremely hydrophobic we guarantee maximum reliability even when filtering moist air.
Each capsule is a ready to use, pre-tested, complete filter. The pleated PTFE membrane ensures maximal filtration
area.
We offer two different connectors and three different sizes
P Capsules with inlet and outlet hose nipples
P Capsules with inlet and oulet sanitary flanges
P Filtration areas 0.05 – 0.1 – 0.2 m2
For the filtration of those acids, bases and non-aqueous solvents for which our cellulose acetate capsules can not
be used PTFE capsules is an excellent choice.

SEED TESTING PAPERS
MUNKTELL Seed Testing Papers are widely used by seed
testing institutes and others for germination capacity testing
and for health tests e.g. Jacobsen (Copenhagen tank), on top
of paper and osmosis test.
MUNKTELL TOWELS have been especially developed for ger-
mination capacity testing of cereals. From an occupational
safety point of view, e.g. cleanliness and heavy weights to lift,
this method is widely preferred before the conventional
method of growing in sand. It also requires much less space.
