Dear Families and Friends,

UPMC Pinnacle is the leading provider of women and infant services in central Pennsylvania, welcoming nearly 4,000 babies a year — and this number is expected to grow. After 20 years, Harrisburg’s “home” hospital is in need of significant upgrades, modifications, modernization, and expansion of services. We want to give every baby, mother, and family the best experience by improving patient access, privacy, security, and comfort.

Now is the time for every member of the UPMC Pinnacle family to join together for the future of our hospital through the Labor of Love Campaign. This campaign represents our continued commitment to patient-centered, quality health care. Our goal is to build the new Women and Babies Center by adding an 8th and 9th floor to the Medical Sciences Building at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg and dramatically upgrading the Labor and Delivery facility. This new, warm, comfortable, and technologically advanced center will address the multifaceted needs of women and babies including a brand-new, larger, state-of-the-art, Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

With the entire UPMC Pinnacle family and community working together, we know we can reach our goal. The following pages detail the exciting project and programs that will be funded through the Labor of Love Campaign —transforming the care experience for our patients. The total project cost will be $57 million, of which the capital campaign and hospital volunteers have set a $10 million fundraising goal.

There is power in every gift, and it’s up to us to make a difference for future generations. The Pinnacle Health Foundation invites you to join us, as we take this critical step forward to benefit our precious babies, their families, and our community.

Sincerely,

Jill Costopoulos & Julie TrognerLabor of Love, Campaign Co-Chairs

THRIVE AND TRANSFORM

Giving birth is an exciting and wonderful moment in life and remains one of the top three reasons why women use the hospital on an annual basis. At UPMC Pinnacle, we hope that every child born is brought into a comfortable and soothing environment, with the best medicine and care team available.

Addressing the needs of women and babies creates opportunities for healthier families and a positive societal change in health and wellness. The long-term benefits of increased maternal health extend across generations, ensuring health equity in the community and improved health outcomes. These outcomes include life expectancy, cognitive development, nutrition, school enrollment, dropout rate, and literacy.

UPMC Pinnacle has, on average, more than 6,000 face-to-face interactions annually with women through prepregnancy and post-support programs. Additionally, UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg delivers more babies than any other hospital in central Pennsylvania and holds the area’s only Level III, high-volume, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). As a designated Baby-Friendly® birth facility, we continue to provide excellence in maternal and newborn care.

This project is important for patient safety and the way we deliver care. It also allows us to provide the safest, highest-quality level of care. It will modernize the hospital to mirror our other facilities, and it will meet the potential needs of future patients.

The last modernization project at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg for women and infant health was over 20 years ago. The current configuration, with services distributed between the 8th and 9th floors, presents issues that inhibit convenience, security, comfort, and privacy.

Lack of space for a spouse or significant other, facilities not designed for frequent multiple births, small operating rooms, no dedicated bereavement accommodations, and the challenge posed by Labor and Delivery located on a different floor than maternity services, are just a few of the limitations of the current facility. The current structures at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg impedes the continuum of care that is standard throughout our hospitals and that is expected by our patients.

Time and demand have taken a toll on our current NICU, and we have outgrown our space. The current NICU is too small to effectively accommodate the number of patients needing this specialized care and provides very little privacy for families. The NICU operates at maximum capacity or greater 60 percent of the time — 219 days of the year — preventing additional admissions. The current NICU consists of six pods or rooms.

With 32 licensed NICU beds, cribs are often inches apart due to large equipment with minimal space for families to visit. There is no privacy at the bedside for physicians to visit with parents, often resulting in difficult conversations in the visitors lounge. Space limitations make it challenging for NICU physicians and staff to carry forward family-centered medical care, which is vital to patients and families. Crowded conditions create a stressful environment for families and premature babies, who are sensitive to light and noise.

The Labor of Love Campaign creates a new Women and Babies Center that will be family-focused and infant-friendly, allowing for ease of access and improved circulation of services through the new floors. The space will be supportive of UPMC Pinnacle caregivers while also allowing families suitable space for one of life’s most precious moments. To ensure community needs are at the heart of this new facility, UPMC Pinnacle’s New Mom Network support group was invited to provide important recommendations into the project design.

The new Women and Babies Center will be placed on top of the current building, with an addition of 8th and 9th floors. It will create almost two acres, or 87,120 sq. feet, of new space. Patients will enter the hospital for maternity services in a separate, highly visible and easily accessible entrance off the main lobby, travel on the dedicated elevators to the 8th floor welcome center, flow through the assessment center into the appropriate area, and complete their stay in one of the new, adjacent units. None of this is possible in the current facility structure. Patient rooms will hold comfortable furnishings not only for expectant and new mothers but also for significant others and family members. There will be private bathrooms and lighting controls that create a peaceful and quiet environment. Restful sleep, relaxation, and intimate moments between mother and baby can be cherished before returning home.

My baby was born weighing one pound, 14 ounces. We have been in the UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg NICU for three months. It would be wonderful to have a private room for our baby and our family. I come in every day, and it can be noisy and very distracting. I think private rooms would allow me to bond more with my baby and be a great amenity for families.

The new Level III NICU, with 44 beds, will be solely on the 9th floor, providing a private and safe space for parents and families. With this new space, UPMC Pinnacle will be able to increase the number of babies treated, improve infant care with private rooms, and provide ample space for parents to bond with their babies.

In addition to private rooms, an Advanced Care Nursery will provide infants advancements in neurological medicine and respiratory therapy to support premature development. Each patient room will be equipped with a special Giraffe OmniBed Carestation, which is designed to provide consistently controlled thermal environments, improved patient access and visibility, and reliable clinical performance.

Beyond upgraded amenities, the Women and Babies Center within UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg will afford patients immediate access to emergency services, should either mother or baby need them. Expert cardiologists, neurosurgeons, and specialty physicians are just down the hall and able to provide lifesaving services at a moment’s notice.

“I was scheduled to have a C-section with my twins. I woke up at 4 a.m. with chest pain like I had never experienced before. We thought I was going into labor, so we went to the hospital. They took us up to labor and delivery, and at that point, they determined I was having a heart attack. They quickly got me to the Cath Lab and successfully placed a stent to open up the artery in my heart. The maternity and cardiac teams really combined forces so that I could give birth to two healthy babies. They didn’t just see us as patients but as family. We didn’t know how fortunate we were; the right people were in the right place, and their expertise shined through at the right time. They were able to save my life and our twins.”

Maternal Fetal Medicine provides state-of-the-art services with additional testing, monitoring, and/or treatment for high-risk pregnancies.

The Cribs for Kids® Program provides education to parents, family members, childcare providers, and health professionals about safe infant sleep practices.

The Bailey House, supported by the Pinnacle Health Auxiliary, provides a home away from home for families who live outside of the immediate Harrisburg area who want to care for and visit their little one in the hospital.

Nurse-Family Partnership® Program provides critical medical and social support to low-income, first-time mothers during their pregnancies and the first years of their child’s life.

Perinatal Bereavement Program provides individualized support and resources for families that have experienced the loss of a baby through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth, or neonatal death. We understand that parents are going through a difficult time, and we do everything we can to support them and help them through the grieving process.

Infant Development Program offers a wide array of services and therapies to assist children from birth to three years of age and their families. The primary goal is to support parents and caregivers in helping young children reach their fullest developmental potential.

“Kate is almost two years old now; she’s very girly and is very sweet. We tried for a couple of years to get pregnant, and we had a long, stable delivery. Everything was going well until she was born. She was born in distress and suffered a stroke. As first-time parents, we were scared and felt helpless. We were told it was a left cerebral stroke and that area would be problematic for Kate’s coordination and balance. We were so grateful for the help of the UPMC Pinnacle Infant Development Program, as the physical therapist was able to work with Kate to help her develop positive habits to further her potential. She really showed us at this age, this is what Kate should be doing, and these are the toys you should encourage her to play with. I’m sure that any parent is proud of milestones, but these milestones were awesome for Kate.”

The support of our community is vital, as philanthropy plays a crucial role in the success of this new center. Just like any other business or service provider, we must use our resources wisely. We believe the expansion and improvements in patient services are a critical need for our community. Many continue to ask, what does UPMC mean for our community? UPMC’s investment in central Pennsylvania focuses on much needed physician specialist recruitment, clinical research, and bringing tertiary specialties to our region. UPMC Pinnacle continues our responsibility for investing in facilities, programs, and services that improve the health and well-being of our communities, right here at home.

Our big dream for these little miracles is to provide the most advanced care in the best facility, closer to home for our friends, families, and neighbors. As we count these little fingers and toes, our goal is to raise $10 million in philanthropic support. By supporting the Labor of Love Campaign, you will be helping UPMC Pinnacle provide a new space that is reflective of the advanced and thoughtful care that our smallest patients and their families deserve.

The Pinnacle Health Foundation is creating a NICU Endowment Fund to support NICU families in need. Over half of all patients treated in the NICU are Medicaid eligible because their parents are unemployed, uninsured, underinsured, homeless, or facing a difficult treatment plan for their child.

Many times, parents exceed their insurance coverage, placing them on a payment plan for years to afford their babies’ care. Families often face financial stress as they struggle to pay for costs associated with elongated NICU stays.

Even the most basic items may seem out of reach for parents as they struggle to cope with an infant in the NICU and paying for care. In some instances, parents must have specialized equipment in order to take their baby home following a stay in the NICU. The Endowment Fund would provide such equipment to parents who otherwise could not afford it. The fund will also be available to provide medication and infant supplies.
