Advanced Steps: Administration requirements
Section Four of the TIA/EIA-606-A Standard details the four classes of administration. Each class contains information on requirements to properly administer
the network.
The term Administration refers to the overall physical management of the network. This
includes labelling as well as record keeping on all the various labels throughout the
network.
Identifiers (Labels) & Records
Advanced Steps: Classes of AdministrationDetermining the Classes of Administration
The four different classes are characterized by the network and infrastructure design. To
determine which class your installation is, you will need to consider the size and complexity of that network.
Each class will have a specific recommendation on how to properly label and manage
(administer) a facility that fits that particular class.
Advanced Steps: Classes of Administration
The Benefits of Using ClassesThe benefits of classifying the network for labelling management include:
•The ability to build modular, scalable networks that enable network installers to save
time, money and resources on future MACs, maintenance and repairs.
•The ability of classifying networks, however, is that it allows the network technician to
match the management of the system to the complexity of the system. A simple
network will need only simple management, whereas a more complex network will need
more detailed management.
•The ability to upgrade without re-labelling. All the classes in the TIA/EIA-606-A
Standard are cumulative, meaning that if a Class 1 network is upgraded to a Class 3
network, it will not need to be re-labelled.
Common situations in installations
MACMoves, Adds &
Changes of Cables….
Everything comes down to two things:
TIME & MONEY!
Protecting Owners Assets
Show that you care about home
environmentsMake sense of a
messRepairs are often
carried out by different installers…differently!
Abandoned cablesRemoving
abandoned cables is more costly than
installing new cables.
Sustainable Installations:
The job you do is crucial for today’s businesses and organisations to run
smoothly. But like any job, there’s not only the wrong way and the right way to
do it; there’s also the best way. The best way finishes the job and leaves the
mark of a professional.
Take pride in your work –
and save time & money.
Why Labeling Networks/Datacenters is important ?» Reduce Downtime of network
▪ Save Cost by accelerating time for repair
▪ Save cost of downtime caused by faulty cables or connections
– 71% is caused by Infrastructure (Soure – Sun Microsystems)
» Reduce Maintenance Time
▪ Save Cost due to increase efficiency for MAC’s (Move, Adds and Changes)
accelerating work schedules & increasing hereby productivity
» Increasing Competitiveness
▪ Eliminates or decrease management risk through professional labeled network

Marketing
“We don’t spend lot’s of time on labelling….”
BUT, have you ever thought about:
• Labelling is highly visible – it is the presentation of your good work, or not.
• Sustainable labelling has a positive effect.
• Neglected labelling leaves a questionable impression.
• Can sustainable labelling help you to gain new business?
Marketing your installations
Do you spend lot’s of money on marketing: website, leaflets, adverts…..
Have you ever considered your installation work as a marketing tool?
- Labelling gives a good appearance. If it looks good, it underlines the sustainable job you have done!
- Labelling enables you to manage the overall system. Which cables are abandoned which ones are in use?
- Labelling helps to control the cost and time of your installations.
- Labelling enables you to be consistent in your work. Especially across project sites, consistency can be guaranteed.
- Labelling helps to get new business. Word of mouth spreads quickly!
Labelling – Considerations beforehand• Define your objectives.
• Understand the time it takes to label in your business.
• Choose the ideal labelling method for your business: weigh pro’s & con’s.
• Understand what information is relevant to put on your labels: Identification.
• Involve your installers/engineers in this decision.
• Involve your clients in this decision.
• Choose the most suitable labelling material for your business: Durable labels.
• Training of staff: Communicate your objectives to your staff and ensure that your labelling
method is used in a standardised way.
• Keep records: Save time in future work.
Labelling
The key factor of a good administration system is the component labelling. Records cannot be established and maintained without good labelling during and after installation.
Labelling factors: Visibility + Durability + Time it takes to label
Costs
Manage your spend on:
- Label printers: Most efficient solution for your business.
- Look at functionalities that you need to print.
- Which is the speediest & best way of printing for your team?
- Compare prices.
- Labels: Sustainable work.
- Which surfaces do you want to label?
- Which material stays stuck on the surface you want to label?
- What identification method/labelling standard is ideal for your business?
- Labour: Time it takes to print.
- How long it takes to define the text on the label.
- How long it takes to print the labels.
- Costs per label.
- How long does it take your installer/engineer to print? / How expensive is this for you?
Advanced Steps
Benefits of implementing standards:
• Ensure a common labelling language across sites.
• Ensure a constant result & service over time.
• Ensure you are doing the same as your partner
does.
