UV Curing Optical Adhesives

NOA60 typically has three uses: as amounting cement for lenses, for theassembly of doublets or prisms, or formounting components between twopieces of glass or methacrylate plastic.Due to its excellent insulating properties,NOA60 can also be used as a protectiveovercoat on electrical components.

NOA61 is designed to give the bestpossible bond to glass surfaces. It meetsFederal Specification MIL-A-3920 foroptical adhesives and is approved for useon all government contracts specifyingsuch adhesives. This item has excellentadhesion to metal, fiberglass, and glass-filled plastics.

NOA63 can be used for bondingachromats, prisms, and all otherprecision compound optics. This

adhesive is characterized by lowfluorescence and provides excellent UVtransmission. It is also suitable forbonding glass to metal. This adhesivecures well in thick sections, shrink, andhas a slight resiliency, thus minimizingstrain.

NOA65, when cured, is a very flexibleadhesive and was designed to minimizestrain even when used to bonddissimilar materials possessing differentcoefficients of expansion. It is especiallysuitable for relatively thick adhesivecross sections. Typical applicationsinclude potting of lenses in metal mountsand bonding plastic to glass. In addition,this adhesive is also suitable as a blockingcement for temporary mounting onpolishing blocks.

NOA68 is a flexible adhesive designed togive improved adhesion to many plasticssuch as acrylic, polycarbonate, and CAB.Suggested uses for NOA68 includebonding compound plastic lenses,laminating polarized film between glassor plastic, mounting lenses in metal orplastic mounts, and bonding coverglasses onto plastic optics.

NOA81 is an adhesive that curesextremely quickly. Although NOA81 hassimilar qualities to NOA61, it curesthree to five times faster and provides astronger bond. NOA81 is recommendedfor applications that require extratoughness or rapid curing.

K6-NOA is a kit that includes all six UVcurable adhesives above with applicationdata on each.

Norland Optical Adhesives are clear, one part adhesives that do notcontain solvents. When exposed to UV light (see page 1053 for a UVcuring lamp), they gel in seconds and completely cure in minutes to givea tough resilient bond. NBA107 is a single component, UV curing adhesive used to bond optical components tometal polishing fixtures temporarily. The adhesive cures by exposure to UV light, thuseliminating the heat-induced strain typical of hot pitch mounting methods. Deblocking(removal of the optic) is accomplished by immersing the optic in warm water (80°C).

Electrodag 112 is a ready-to-use conductive graphite antistatic shield acrylic coating that providesextremely high conductivity, making it ideal for coating plastics to create EMI shielding. It is also usedto provide a conductive protective coating on metals and plastics and for controlling electrostaticdischarge. Electrodag 112 is water-based and cures at room temperature; it can be handled after curing25 minutes and fully cures in 24 hours. The curing process can be accelerated by using temperatures upto 160°F (71°C).

Electrodag 5810 (i.e. Silver-epoxy) is a room-temperature cure, silver-filled, 2-componentepoxy that provides good electrical and thermal conductivity. With a volume resistance of0.0007Ω-cm and a lap shear of 1000psi, Silver-epoxy is ideal for mounting electrically andthermally conductive components when soldering is not possible. The room-temperaturecure time is 24 hours, but this can be accelerated by using higher temperatures [e.g. 2hours at 149°F (65°C) or 1 hour at 212°F (100°C)].

The SC10 is a versatile instrument designed to control the SH05Beam Shutter with millisecond accuracy. The front panel of the SC10features an LED that reveals the status of the shutter at a glance andan interactive LCD display that provides access to the controlparameters. Computer control is provided through a digital I/ORS232 port on the back of the unit, as well as a BNC jack for a 5Vexternal trigger. As a special feature, the unit incorporates a laser safetyinterlock feature that overrides all system commands and closes theshutter. The unit must be re-enabled to resume operation.

The SC10 also doubles as a stand-alone digital delaygenerator with 1ms resolution, 0.1msaccuracy, and a TTL output trigger. The SC10 has three basic user interfaces:control from the front panel, controlfrom a PC, or direct control from anexternal trigger event.

The SH05 Beam Shutter utilizes a rotary, electromechanical actuator to provide sub-millisecond shutteroperation. In general operation, the shutter remains in a closed position and then opens with a pulse controlsignal. As long as the control voltage to the shutter remains high, the shutter will stay open; however, if thevoltage goes low, the shutter will close, providing inherent fail-safe operation. An optical sensor, which detectsthe shutter blade position in the housing, confirms the state of the shutter position, making it ideal inapplications where a laser safety lockout is required. The rate at which the device is opened can be controlled.

The input aperture of the SH05 is threaded with Thorlabs SM05 (0.535"-40) thread to interface easily withall of our SM05 lens tubes. The SH05 is English and Metric System compatible and comes with a 10' cableto connect the shutter directly to the SC10 Controller.

Two controllers for the SH05 that include an "interlock mode" incorporated into the control logic of thecontroller are available from Thorlabs: SC10 Shutter Controller and TSC001 T-Cube Flipper/ShutterController. The SH05 can also be used with a third-party controller.

Thorlabs’ viewing cards, about the size of a credit card,contain a special sensor area that can easily locate IR,VIS, and UV light beams and their focal points. All aremounted on durable clear plastic, allowing for easyhandling and carrying.

The VC-1550 is designed for wavelengths of 790-840nm, 870-1070nm, and 1500-1590nm. It features a sensor area of 2.1" x 1.2". The VC-VIS/IR is enhanced for the IR absorption band of 800-1700nm, and the VC-UV covers the 250-525nm ultraviolet absorptionband. Each of these cards is 3.4" x 2.1" in size. The IRC3 is a smaller card with dimensions of 2.4" x 1.79", and it is designed for the 700-1400nm wavelength range. It requires room light charging and features a sensor area of 1.5" x 0.75".

Image contrast can suffer due to stray light reaching the focal plane of many applications where the light path travels through a tube orother enclosed area. Applying a flat-black paint to the inside may help, but a textured matte-black surface is a much more effective lighttrap.

Flocked paper is a very black, self-adhesive material made of many fine fibers. When looked at from low angles, it absorbs virtually 100%of the light that strikes it. The fibers will not shed dust or lint, unlike some velvet and felt materials.

Needle Nose Pliers 4" Adjustable Wrench

The AW4 is an ideal tool when small nuts or bolts need securingin tight spaces. With a maximum extension of 0.53", the AW4 iscompatible with any nut and bolt from a #0 to a 5/16 thread.

These cutters are designed for cutting soft wire up to 20AWG. Although mainly aimed atelectrical wires, the tool is perfectly suited for cutting optical fiber to length (but does notreplace an actual cleaving tool, see XL410 or S90W)

Wire strippers provide a safe way of removing the outer layers of wires and cables. A series of slots withdifferent gap sizes ensures that the inner wire or fiber isn't damaged. Although designed for electricalwires, the tool is well suited for stripping the jacket and furcation tubing off fibers.

The NP1 is an essential electronics tool. With its fine-serrated jaw,the NP1 provides a good clamping grip and is ideal for grippingand looping wire. These needle nose pliers are best used in tightspaces.

Laser Diode Can OpenerThe WR1 is a simple handheld device designedto remove the caps from standard laserpackages. Many applications, such as fiberpigtailing, can be optimized by having closeraccess to the laser chip.

Operation is as simple as placing a diode onto thetwo rollers at the front of the device, lightlyapplying pressure with the rubber covered grips, and turning theblade actuator (as shown to the right). The precision-ground, hardened steel bladewill easily cut through the wall of the diode cap, safely removing it.

These cutters are designed for cutting theKevlar threads that are used in the protectivejacket of fiber cables. Note that these cutters shouldnot be used for cutting fiber since this willsignificantly reduce their Kevlar cutting ability.

The 10125HG SMA height gauge is ideal for accurately measuring the height of a polished fiberoptic SMA connector. SMA-to-SMA couplers are designed to be a non-contact interface, andsince the insertion loss (IL) of an SMA-SMA junction is dependent on the distance between thetwo SMA connector end faces, the height of the polished SMA connector is important.Individually calibrated gauge pins are included with each 10125HG gauge to ensure properheight measurements.
