Ecology

Greek word oikos means house abd ology means study of Ecology study of the house (earth) where organisms

live

Each organism interact with one another

Ecology is a widely diverse and complex area of study

Ecological Relationships

1. Population a group of individuals of the same species occupying the same geographical location at the same time1. students

Energy Flow

Autotrophs (producers) capture energy from environment and convert it into "food

Heterotrophs (consumers) must eat things

Herbivores eat plants

Carnivores - eat animals

Omnivores eat both plants and animals

Detritivores / Decomposers eats dead organisms & organic wastes

Survivorship Curves

Survivorship curves are used to learn about the pattern of lifespan within a population.

In population I most individuals reach adulthood, and there is a large die-off of individuals as the population nears the end of it normal lifespan.

Population II has a fairly constant mortality throughout the lifespan of the population.

Population III has very high mortality of the young, but those individuals that do reach maturity live long life with a low death rate.
