Scarborough Beach Greater Perth
Leave Perth City behind and enjoy the breath-taking scenery and world-class facilities of Scarborough Beach and along the sheltered coastline to Trigg Beach. The pristine beaches and crystal clear water are ideal for swimming, snorkelling and relaxing and are connected with easy pedestrian and cycle pathways. Scarborough and Trigg are renowned as Perth’s most popular surfing spots with lessons and board hire available. The Scarborough foreshore has recently transformed into a vibrant stretch of coastline with two memorable pedestrian promenades, a children’s adventure playground, art projects, variety of skate bowls, climbing wall, half-court basketball, exercise equipment, amphitheatre and famous Sunset Hill. Overlooking the Indian Ocean is Scarborough Beach Pool, geothermally heated so it can be enjoyed all year round. There are many cafes, bars, restaurants and shops and a large range of accommodation from backpacker hostels, affordable family apartments to luxury hotels with ocean views.
Getting there: Scarborough Beach is only 13km north from the Perth CBD and can be reached by car in less than 15 minutes, or public transport in 45 minutes. Bus 990 is a regular service from the Perth Busport to Scarborough Beach, and it also connects with trains at Glendalough Train Station. You can also take bus 421 to Scarborough Beach from Stirling Train Station, only three stops from Perth Train Station on the Butler line; see the Rail Map opposite. All routes and times can be viewed at www.transperth.wa.gov.au/journey-planner.

A Brief History
Scarborough was named after the English beach resort of the same name in North Yorkshire. As land at Scarborough was sandy and of little agricultural value, it was not settled straight away. In 1885 a visiting Sydney journalist explored the coastline at Scarborough and promoted the high quality of the beach. Encouraged by the publicity, Perth firm Laurence and Cooke purchased and subdivided land, followed in 1892 by Patrick Callaghan of Melbourne. The Perth Road Board (now Stirling Council), later put the land to public auction and in the years following World War II large-scale development occurred. At that time street names in the area were altered to mimic the suburb’s namesake in Yorkshire. By the 1960s there was little remaining undeveloped land. However, in the mid-1980s extensive redevelopment began, particularly along the beach frontage. For more information, visit the Mount Flora Regional Museum - www.stirling.wa.gov.au/mountfloramuseum

The Marmion Marine Park was WA’s first marine park, declared in 1987 and named after early settler Patrick Marmion, (1815-1856) who operated a whaling station in the area in 1849. North of Trigg, the park covers an area of 10,500 ha, from Trigg Island to Burns Beach and is an ocean lover’s paradise. Clear shallow lagoons, reefs, and small islands provide habitats for a diverse range of seabirds and marine mammals, in particular the bottlenose dolphin, and at certain times of the year, humpback whales. The park is popular for diving, fishing, snorkeling, windsurfing and boating. Visit the website where you can download the park map.
