LA THUILE PRESS RELEASE – SUMMER 2020
UPGRADING THE SELF
‘To me, walking means to enter the nature. That is why I walk slowly, I hardly ever
run. To me, Nature is not a competition field. I go there to observe, to feel, with all
my senses. And, thus, my soul enters the trees, the grass, the flowers. To me, high
mountains are a true feeling’.
REINHOLD MESSNER
Once in La Thuile, the first thing that captures its visitors is nature and its immense
purity, its wide spaces, its vivid contrasts when speaking of colours, its thick woods of
conifers, the peaks of the Mont Blanc chain that stand out and the iconic Rutor massif
that, together with its glacier, watches over the valley. La Thuile is one of those places
where one can feel free, be hugged by the energy of the mountains, find some spare
time and be enriched by strong emotions, but above all, regenerate both mind and
soul.
We are in Valdigne, in the North-western part of the Aosta Valley, at 1,441 m of altitude,
a few kilometres away from the motorway exit, very close to the big cities of the North of
Italy, France, and Switzerland thank to the Mont Blanc tunnel, but far enough to forget
everyday frenzy, in a context where tourist development is becoming more and more
sustainable and responsible.
Photo: Luca Fontana
‘This wild magnificence was simply there, hidden, waiting to be discover by
somebody ready to truly listen’. This is how Luca Fontana - photographer, opinion
maker and influencer – defines the territory of di La Thuile after having gone through
60 km and 3,500 m of positive drop during a self-sufficiency trekking. He documented
the ecstasy and magic of the places he visited in the photo exhibition ‘The Hidden
Wilderness Ring’, which can be admired in the centre of the town for free.
In La Thuile there are many trekking routes, some of them are more beaten and some
others are almost unknown, but they are all immerged in a pure and silent
environment, where the mountains are deliberately very little anthropomorphized.
They are powerful, and their energy becomes lymph to detoxify from the rhythms
imposed by everyday life and, thus, to recuperate physical and mental wellbeing.
By having a look to La Thuile’s path map, you will be spoilt for choice. On the one side,
Youlaz, Orgères, Chavannes and Breuil valleys: they are green, wild, precious from a
geologic point of view and full of historical evidences, but the most important thing is
that when you reach their tops, you will have a privileged view over the Mont Blanc.
On the other side, the paths that lead to the Rutor area with its waterfalls, the
Bellacomba lakes, the lago Verde and the lago Grigio and the Deffeyes mountain
hut, the departure point for rather demanding hikes to the Rutor glacier, the sixth
Italian glacier when speaking about its extension.
Aiming to the Little Saint Bernard pass, first you reach the Lago Verney, the widest
natural lake of the Aosta Valley that lies at 2,088 m above the sea level, or continue to
the archaeological area at the border between Italy and France. Being an ancient
glacial area, the surroundings of the Lago Verney own a rich variety of flowers. The
shores house sedges, cottongrasses and sphagnums, whereas a bit more far away there
are rushes, catchweeds, buttercups, together with sassifrages and primulas.
Opposite, there are two ‘classic’ routes for families: the one that from the Colle San
Carlo leads to Belvedere d’Arpy in fifteen minutes only, a panoramic point over the
Mont Blanc, or the one that leads to the lago di Arpy.
Lago Bellacomba Lago di Arpy
HIDDEN WILDERNESS RING
They are part of the history of the town, they are shrouded in mystery and legend, they are originated by small lakes fed by Rutor glacier. They are the wonderful waterfalls which can be visited in summer and which are composed by three rushing jumps of water which finish in ravines and precipices and carve the rocks with the whole power of melt water.
Starting from the hamlet of La Joux, at 1,603 m above the sea level and 3 km away from the town centre, you can reach the third waterfall (1,996 m) by following a nice path. The first panoramic point lies at about twenty minutes from the houses of La Joux, along the mule track that goes through pinewoods. The first waterfall is surprising: the emotion of a rainbow is waiting for you, as well as the power of water that offers incredible sensations.
Rutor waterfalls
A bucolic plateau close to stream is the perfect spot to stop for a while, refresh and take some pictures, before continuing climbing towards the second waterfall, at 1,850 m, and the third one, where a 16-metre long and 1,20-metre large steel bridge, inaugurated in 2014, crosses the fall and offers a superb point of view over the three water jumps.
From here you can come back on the other side of the mountain or keep on hiking to the Deffeyes mountain hut (2,494 metres) right at the foot of the Rutor glacier. It is a rather demanding but wonderful hike, a bit hard for kids. Another option is taking right after the waterfalls and follow directions towards the Bellacomba glacial lakes.
Equipped and expert climbers can try the hike to the Rutor
glacier, better if accompanied by an Alpine guide. With its
8.4 square km, it is the third Valdôtain glacier after the
Miage and the Lys, and the sixth in Italy. A vast ice cap
starts from the Testa del Rutor (3,486 m) and descend until
2,500 m.
The hike lasts at least two days, from La Joux to the
Deffeyes mountain hut first (overnight stay possible) and
then the Testa del Rutor can be reached on the following
day.

LA THUILE – LITTLE SAINT BERNARD PASS
ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA – CROMLECH
In a wild context, at 2,188 m, right over the Lago Verney
and at the border between Italy and France there is a
magic place. It is an archaeological area with a
Cromlech, a circle made of 46 stones with a diameter of
72 metres. In the centre of it there was a dolmen, and in
the ancient times it was considered a rather important
worship place.
Many legends are linked to the Cromlech, which is often
wrongly called ‘Circle of Hannibal’ since it is commonly
attributed to the Punic leader who, the legend says,
crossed the pass. It was certainly used as an open-air
temple and an astronomic observatory: this hypothesis is
confirmed by the fact that in the circle there is a bigger
stone, which was probably used to sign the direction of
the sun in the day of the summer solstice.
On 21st June, in fact, the Cromlech offers an exciting
astronomic show, since the sun sets behind
Lancebranlette (the mountain that surmounts the
Cromlech), creates a semi-circular shadow for about half a
minute and closes in upon the megalithic structure: only
the sacred area is lit.
Roman mansio
This site, which is still examined, probably dates back to the Pre-Celtic epoch (3000 BC). But the importance of the
area as a transit route is also proved by the ruins of a
small Gallic temple and of two ‘Mansiones’ of the Roman
age, which guaranteed refreshment and overnight stay
both to the travellers and the animals that already
crossed the pass during the I century BC to reach the
Gauls. This area is so magic also thanks to the Columna
Jovis, which is 4 metres high, on which top we can today
see a statue of Saint Bernard of Menthon, archbishop of
Aosta. It is said that once, over the top of the column,
there was a red stone, the so-called ‘Escarboucle’ or
Jupiter’s eye, a proof of the ancient cult of god Penn,
which was rather common in the area. The legend says
that that stone, which was perfectly visible from the
distance, feared the inhabitants of the valley, who were
already converted to Christianity and thought that it was
the red eye of the devil, and they asked Saint Bernard to
fight and win the devil and to destroy the stone.
The magnificence of the landscape, the vastness and the
power of nature, which is so alive, the silence that
shrouds the mountains, the history and many legends
make this place so charming and evocative, and the
keeper of a particular kind of energy that has to be lived
in total freedom, according to your passions and
curiosity. Menhir of the Cromlech, Little Saint Bernard pass

Since the most ancient times the Little Saint Bernard pass
has been a transit route: that is why all those who visit
the area perceive the strong value of welcoming. The
Hospice, founded in the XI century by Saint Bernard of
Montjou, kept its hospital role until World War II. It was
destroyed various times during conflicts of different
periods and constantly rebuilt. Today the structure
houses the International Tourist Information point and
the Museum of the History of the Pass, the Valdigne and
the Savoy areas.
In this area of wide green meadows, on the French side of
the Pass, abbot Pierre Chanoux, a priest keen on climbing,
built the Chanousia botanical garden in 1897 to make
people aware the beauty and the rarity of Alpine flora. This
botanical garden is the highest one in Europe: it can be
visited from July to September and houses more than 1,000
plants! While visiting the garden everybody can find and
live a unique sensorial experience.

Hidden between steep slopes, green pinewoods and tiny
hamlets La Thuile owns a rich mine patrimony. Lying in
very scenic places, the mines have been a true economic
resource for the town for a long time, but they are also
part of the history both of the town and of its inhabitants.
Two mine complexes developed in La Thuile: one was
linked to the exploitation of silver lead, whereas the other,
the most bearing one, aimed to the extraction of
anthracite to produce coal.
Some documents prove that the mine exploitation
started during the XVI century, whereas in the XIX
century the first coal mines were exploited amateurishly
to satisfy the local needs. But it is in the second half of
the 1920s that, thanks to some huge investments, a vast
coal exploitation programme started and the town
shifted from being a small, agricultural settlement to a
mine centre and reached the top of its activity after
World War II.
The mine activity finished in 1966, when in La Thuile there
was a radical transformation thanks to the exploitation of
another natural element: snow. It gave the town the chance
of becoming the internationally well-known destination that
we all know.
The mine reality of La Thuile is proved by a series of
paths in the woods, some of which can be done with
kids too, that lead to old buildings, air holes of the
galleries, and some rests of technical structures. A
charming route is the one that leads to Granier mine,
Granier mine
where you can still see the hoist used to raise along the
inclined plane the coal mined in the lower levels and to
send it to the departure station of the convoys
destinated to Arpy. From here, thanks to a cableway the
mineral reached Morgex to be firstly manufactured before
being sent to the Cogne steelworks in Aosta. In the area in
front of the Granier gallery we can still see the lines of
the railway and the trolleys used by miners to move the
mineral. Close to the mine there is a table and some
wood benches to have a nice break while contemplating
the Mont Blanc chain, which stands out right in front of
you.
Some fortifications can be easily seen while going
through some paths that start from the town and end up
in the mountains, both on the Little Saint Bernard and
the Colle San Carlo areas. They prove that during the
Savoy epoch, La Thuile was an important bulwark against
the invasions that arrived from France, whereas the
bunker remembers us of some bloody fights of World
War II.

THE POWER OF HISTORY
PROGETTO ORGÈRES
The Orgères valley is rich
in proofs dating back to
a period between the I
and the XVIII centuries
AD. This valley is today
analysed thanks to an
excavation project of the
Università di Torino that,
together with the
Municipality of La
Thuile, promotes various
activities to discover the
area during the summer
for adults and kids.

When in holidays, we more and more try to find ourselves again, to detoxify from
everyday life, to live moments out of space and time, all by discovering the true
essence of the destination we chose. After the though moments we all lived, this wish
has become a true necessity.
Once in La Thuile, the only thing you have to do is to let yourselves be guided by the
scents, the colours and the magic of the surrounding nature to feel good, to find again
your dimension, to reduce tensions, to recuperate the energies and finally reach the
total regeneration of both body and soul.
Walking in the silence of the woods in the hamlet of Promise, lying in the meadows
that surround the town, feeling free in the vastness of Petosan, plunging in the history
of the Little Saint Bernard Pass, listening to the rustle of the winds when climbing up
in the mountains, feeling the breath of the Earth, discovering he secrets hidden by the
mountain flowers, herbs and fruits: you can choose your personal way to be in
harmony with nature and bring back home a personal wellness experience.
The area of Promise, which can be easily reached on foot
from the town centre, is a poetic place where the power
of nature resonates and, thus, you can easily feel its hug.
On the one side, the flowing of the Dora del Rutor
stream, on the other side some green meadows,
surrounded by woods, in front of you, the Rutor massif.
This natural and wild habitat can regenerate your sense
of beauty, astonishment and curiosity, turn out stress,
make you relax, buck you up and give you peace.
A full immersion in nature, a sensorial route with some
open-air physical activities with qualified and professional
trainers, to wake up your body and soul and reinforce your
immune system:
• YOGA COURSE that, breath after breath, gives you
the chance of feeling a unique sensation of
uniqueness with nature;
• MUSCLE TONING COURSE, to positively stimulate
physical and intellectual abilities thanks to a
deeper oxygenation of the whole body that helps
eliminating toxins;
• TONING GYM COURSE to train your muscles and
restart with more energy.

Nature in La Thuile is so generous. The particular climate
conditions, together with altitude, create a habitat which
is truly suitable for the growth of officinal or aromatic
herbs. In the woods, on mountain slopes or in the
meadows, herbs express their best qualities and
properties. Recognizing them is part of that fund of
ancient knowledge and traditions that are handed on
from father to son. During the guided visits organised by
expert botanists the participant can learn how to
distinguish them and how to use them to feel better, to
prepare herbal teas, oils and ointments for massages, to
use them while preparing foods as spices or ingredients
of various dishes or to realise liquors.
Tiny chapels, that lie in the various hamlets of the town,
together with San Nicola parish church (that dates back to
1100 AD), are a nice occasion to discover local art. Some
nice exhibitions can be also found at the Casa Museo
Maison Berton which houses some local works of art,
furniture and ancient objects. The structure organises free
visits and guided visits on request (paying service) for
adults, young people and kids.

After having reached Les Suches by chairlift you can try
various trekking routes. Among the most charming ones
we can cite the one that goes to Mont Valaisan, a
stunning panoramic point from which you can
contemplate both the highest Italian peaks and the
French Alps, or the route that brings to the Little Saint
Bernard pass, the archaeological area and lago Verney.
In vast meadows, close to the woods, blueberry lovers can
find a lot of these fruits that are so rich in vitamin A and C
and own mineral salts and a precious antioxidant action.
Mushroom lovers will be satisfied as well, since the woods
that bring back to the town centre are full of these tasty
species.
But you can go up in the mountains to regenerate and
plunge in the open-air swimming-pool that lies at 2,080
m, sunbathing on a deckchair and have a break while
tasting special local dishes, cold cuts selections and
savoury sandwiches in a chalet.
TREKKING, BUT NON ONLY
Riding a horse is an activity that gives a strong sense of
freedom per se. In La Thuile this sensation is amplified
thanks to some splendid views. From the woods in the
area of Entrèves or along the routes in the Promise area
to start, to the wide spaces in Petosan to gallop: this
experience offers a total immersion in nature.
LTHorses manège in La Thuile lies at 1,450 m, in the ski
facilities area, and it is the perfect departure point for
treks in the mountains. The facilities (box, paddock,
saddle-room, reception, field) are all in a wild and
charming area, which is easily joinable.
Close to the riding school there is a wide parking, a bar, a
restaurant and an equipped picnic area.
FREEDOM GALLOPS IN NATURE
If you want to try something greedy, then in La Thuile
you need to think about chocolate, since the town is
Città del Cioccolato. In 2009 La Thuile was awarded of
this title by Chococlub, Associazione Italiana Amatori
Cioccolato (Italian Association of Chocolate lovers). This
prize is given to those realities where chocolate is
celebrated in terms of production, themed events or
traditions.
Among the chocolate specialities that characterise La
Thuile we can cite Tometta, a patented cake produced
by Pasticceria Cioccolateria Chocolat, the dessert which
conferred the title of ‘Città del Cioccolato’ to La Thuile.
320 grams of true pleasure made of milk chocolate,
gianduja chocolate and toasted and caramelized
Piemonte IGP hazelnuts: its shape remembers us of a
cheese! Pasticceria Cioccolateria Chocolat, that produces
hundreds of different chocolates by using local herbs,
berries and liquors, is cited among the best specialised
guides. Thanks to his experience maître chocolatier
Stefano Collomb often represented the Aosta Valley in
national and international events.
Small families, buildings in wood and stone, stables and poultry pens, stock raising, fields
of maize, potatoes and rye, hunting and collecting fruits, roots and spontaneous herbs,
and all around woods, meadows and the asperities of the mountains. This has been the
reality of La Thuile for centuries.
The traditional dishes that you can often taste in the restaurants of the town or up in
the mountains own these ancient scents and tastes. A simple cuisine, with simple and
strictly local ingredients, which is influenced by the Savoy tradition.
Some food itineraries in La Thuile allow you to discover the territory, its dairy stories
(the most famous product is Fontina cheese) and their making process, how to
desiccate bovine, chamois, deer or wild boar meat to produce motzetta. And, in
addition, the making process of boudin, a kind of cold cut which has ancient origins
made of boiled potatoes, lard and beetroots. It is very nourishing even if its
ingredients are simple and salvage.
But La Thuile owns a more recent ‘sweet’ history which is linked to chocolate. A
truly unmissable experience is an incursion into the confectioner’s shops of the
town to have a break and choose between chocolates, pralines, soft chocolates,
pies and cakes, ice-creams and fondue, everything chocolate-based.
Always speaking about chocolate, we can also cite Torta
1.441 and dark chocolate ice-cream by La Crémerie, two
other excellences of the sweet tradition in La Thuile.
THE TASTE OF TRADITION
CITTÀ DEL CIOCCOLATO SIN OF GLUTTONY
A high-mountain pasture, a chalet, a stable, a green and
wide valley, where cows browse on herbs and flowers,
where the only noises you will hear are those of cowbells
and rushing streams. We are in Breuil valley, where you
can arrive after deviating from the road that leads to the
Little Saint Bernard pass.
2,000 m of altitude, a habitat where nature is powerful
thanks to its contrasts in colours and where the Mont
Blanc stand over the pastures: this is Verney mountain
pasture, another world, the true expression of rural life
and culture. Here nature and human activities are deeply
linked to the local history and territory.
Verney mountain pasture
A story of passion, the one of Davide Ramires, who left
city life to practice stock raising together with his family.
The visit to his mountain pasture allows the participants
to discover Alpine traditions. Davide and his wife Sylvie
spend their days following the rhythms of nature: the
sun wakes them up, then animals are cuddled, then the
sun sets and finally, it’s rest time. Seeing the dairyman
milking a cow or learning how milk becomes dairy products
is so charming. During the visit the participants can taste
brossa, seras, butter, fontina and aromatised tome:
these foods can also be bought to have a nice picnic in
the surrounding areas!
When speaking about the Valdôtain food tradition, the
most well-known kind of cheese is Fontina. The visit to
Grotta delle fontine, which is part of Mattinata D.O.P.,
allows the participants to discover the making process of
this precious local product. Carved into a war hiding place,
this cave is the perfect spot for the maturing process
because of its humidity and temperature. Here, more than
6,000 Fontina cheese, which is a kind of semi-cooked
cheese, whose paste is elastic and melting, with few holes
and a compact, thin and brown rind, are stored. Some
tastings offer the chance of trying and discovering how the
maturing process affects the kind of cheese.
Mattinata D.O.P., an initiative organised by Ristorante Les
Granges (which is part of Saveurs du Val d’Aoste circuit),
proposes 9 events during the whole summer, starting
from July. In addition to Fontina cheese, the participants
can taste other D.O.P. products, such as Valle d’Aosta
Fromadzo, Vallée d’Aoste Lard d’Arnad and Jambon de
Bosses, together with some Valdôtain wines.

2020 SUMMER PROMOTION
#ENJOYLATHUILE
#EnjoyLaThuile is an initiative organised by the municipality of La Thuile and all the
tourist operators. Hotels, bars, restaurants, Alpine guides, ski instructors, rentals, gyms,
wellness centres are all working together to propose a holiday under the sign of freedom
and experience, whose fruition can be chosen by the client in a flexible way. This occasion
satisfies the tourists’ needs, but also allows them to discover the territory, its powerful
nature and its opportunities to feel the true essence of La Thuile, a unique and
regenerating place both for body and soul.
#EnjoyLaThuile in 3 steps
• Choose your holiday and what can make it unique • Buy it today • Use it when you want
The project allows the subscribers to buy now a promotional package for a stay in La
Thuile, together with some gourmet and fun activities, and use it freely during the
2020 summer season or, if stated, even during the 2020-2021 winter season. If
needed, the client can postpone his/her holiday: after having paid, he/she will receive
a voucher to keep and show when he/she decides to use the activities included in the
package.
On www.lathuile.it you can find all the accommodation structures that took part to the initiative.
The Municipality is also involved in ‘Puliamo il Mondo’
(Let’s clean the world) project to collect wastes and
clean parks, roads, streets, squares, rivers and woods.
This initiative is particularly appreciated by kids who
participate also to some awareness campaigns.
In close future the Municipality also wants to promote only
plastic free events to strengthen the local respect of
environment.
COMUNE FIORITO
La Thuile made its territory bloom by taking part to
‘Comuni Fioriti’ (Towns in bloom) contest, organised by
ASPROFLOR and ATL (Distretto Turistico dei Laghi, Monti e
Valli dell’Ossola). It gained the title of ‘Comune Fiorito’, a
prize that is given to those towns that particularly care
about the quality of the environment in which inhabitants
and tourists live. It is a sign of social sensitivity and
economic and environmental farsightedness.
www.lathuile.it
A 100% RENEWABLE MUNICIPALITY
La Thuile’s aim to preserve the environment is more than a reality. The town was awarded
of the title of ‘Renewable municipality’ by Legambiente. The survey underlines how La
Thuile is 100% renewable because of the presence of renewable sources, such as a 2.8 MW
hydroelectric facility or a 12 kW Aeolic system. Together, these two infrastructures widely
satisfy the electricity needs of the inhabitants.
PURER AIR
The Municipality also chose to limit the CO2 emissions in the air. The period in which a
free shuttle runs through the town has been augmented, both in winter and in
summer, to give residents and tourists the chance of moving without using their car
and, thus, considerably reduce pollution. In addition, thanks to the cooperation with
CVA Energie, some charging stations for electric cars have been placed. The
installation of some new structures in the town centre, close to the departure of the
ski facilities and in the Colle San Carlo and Little Saint Bernard pass area has been
scheduled.
MORE RESPECT TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Moloks, which have been already installed in some areas of the town, will be placed in
all the hamlets of La Thuile to improve waste separation, order and cleanness in town.
When speaking about accommodation structures and restaurants, a door-to-door pick up
service has been activated, whereas to accelerate the waste disposal the ecologic centre
is open every day. Plastic and aluminium recycling services are also active.
ENVIRONMENT AND WELLNESS
HOW TO REACH LA THUILE La Thuile is wellness, sport and fun at your fingertips. The town can be easily reached
