Reflection: What is the essence of being a Christian? It is certainly more than doctrines, precepts, and commandments. It

is first and foremost a relationship - a relationship of trust, affection, commitment, loyalty, faithfulness, kind-

ness, thoughtfulness, compassion, mercy, helpfulness, encouragement, support, strength, protection, and so many other qualities that bind people together in mutual love and unity.

Graduate Attribute: Contributes to Society De La Salle’s schools prepared the students for Christian life within a particular society. Their education included whatever was necessary for them to be successful in that society and whatever was necessary for them to live as mature Christians. The curriculum addressed the practical needs and realistic options of the students. For De La Salle had an ability to combine a deep appreciation for God and a deep understanding of God’s world, he embraced the practical.

The Lasallian is envisioned as one who contributes to society. He is able to do so because the school has equipped him with the skills to participate meaningfully in society. The practical orientation of the Lasallian school is not to be interpreted as one that espouses a way that is easy and convenient or even one that condones the ills of society. The practical orientation of the Lasallian is rather one that seeks to prepare young people for responsible participation in the world of work, family and community.

LASALLIAN MISSION WEEK PRIMER

Theme: “Living the Animo through Faith, Service and Communion”

The theme is a four-pronged and yet integral reality

that challenges every member of the Lasallian Community to be its incarnation in their relation with God, others, nature and others . In the context of the celebration of the Year of the Poor, the theme is an invitation for all of us to reverberate it with our actual practice in relating with the poor specifically with the community partners (West Crame Community, ANCOP Village, Correctional for Women Institute and others) of La Salle Green Hills.

The Animo refers to the “Lasallian spirit which is the

spirit of faith and zeal. One who possesses this spirit sees with Christ’s eyes, acts with Christ’s hands, and perseveres with Christ’s heart” (Valenzuela, Living the Lasallian Spirit, July 2008). It is the spirit that animates and sustains all our Lasallian endeavors.

The Spirit of Faith allows one to: discover God’s

active presence in His Word, in men and women, in the poor, in nature, in history, and in ourselves; judge and evaluate things in the light of the Gospel; search for God’s will in order to carry out his saving plan; unite one’s action to the ongoing saving action of God in the world and trust in God’s loving presence and providence when acting or discerning God’s will.

Zeal for Service is the active expression of faith in

Gospel witness and service. It is oriented towards the integral salvation of persons particularly the poor and excluded. It involves total gift of self for others and preferential option for the poor. The desire to be of greater service to others conditions the quest for excellence and continuous self-improvement.

Communion in mission recalls the dynamic

association of the Brothers which has four dimensions: as a relationship with God as the source of mission and ministry; as a way of accomplishing mission, it suggests the solidarity and collaboration that come from sharing one vision, one spirit and one mission; as a way of relating to others, it suggests openness to all persons and the desire to be brother and sister to all especially those in need; as a goal of mission, it suggests the unity that comes through reconciliation between God, human beings and creation. Living the Animo through Faith Service and

Communion is living and promoting the Culture of Helping in our community. It is in this culture that we manifest all that we behold true and noble in the Lasallian tradition: Lasallian Core Values and Graduate Attributes, Lasallian Guiding Principles and the Expected Lasallian Graduate Attributes. It is the same tradition that molds our very identity as Lasallians who will hopefully effect the much needed change to the society as responsible and compassionate leaders.

What Are Learning Disabilities? The behavioral condition attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often associated with learning disabilities because people with ADHD also might have a hard time focusing enough to learn and study. Students with ADHD are often easily distracted and have trouble concentrating. They may also be excessively active or have trouble controlling their impulses. What Causes Them? No one's exactly sure what causes learning disabilities. But researchers do have some theories as to why they develop, including:

Genetic influences. Experts have noticed that learning disabilities tend to run in families and they think that heredity could play a

role. However, researchers are still debating whether learning disabilities are, in fact, genetic, or if they show up in families because kids learn and model what their parents do.

Brain development. Some experts think that learning disabilities can be traced to brain development, both before and after birth.

For this reason, problems such as low birth weight, lack of oxygen, or premature birth may have something to do with learning disa-bilities. Young children who receive head injuries may also be at risk of developing learning disabilities.

Environmental impacts. Infants and young kids are susceptible to environmental toxins (poisons). For example, you may have

heard how lead (which can be found in some old homes in the form of lead paint or lead water pipes) is sometimes thought to con-tribute to learning disabilities. Poor nutrition early in life also may lead to learning disabilities later in life.
