Genre characteristics

La Roux’s video for Bulletproof has a lot of genre forms and conventions of the electropop genre.

•Unique and bold - creative mise-en-scene – All computer animated set• Concept based• Appear quite modern and bright • Light hearted and relaxed atmosphere• Childlike• Original ideas - videos within this genre don't like to stick to safe ideas they seem quite experimental

Is there a relationship between visuals and lyricsI think the meaning of the song is

that she has let some one mess her around in a relationship and she isn’t going to let them doing it anymore.

I think this idea is shown through the visuals, at the start she has her eyes closed, then opens then and starts singing and at the end of the song she sits in the same chair but doesn’t close her eyes, suggesting she is aware of what he has done to her now.

She then begins walking and the camera pans to show random designs behind her suggesting she has been in a mess.

Is there a relationship between visuals and music

• At the bridge of the song she stops and then the song starts to build to the chorus and she starts walking again, while 3D shapes are bouncing around her, falling down. This links well within the music as it creates a build up then a release.

• The artist walks throughout the majority of the video and this is set in time with the beat of the music.

• She is also singing through it, giving a performance element, and a focus on the music.

• The editing is also driven by the music, there is fast-cut montage throughout the video when the beat is quick but the music slows down at some parts in the video and the editing pace reflects this.

Are there any close ups of the artist or any star image motifs

• The main focus in this video is on the artist as there is no narrative at all and it is purely concept based with some performance within that.

• There are lots of close ups of the artist within this song and even though its a duet group Elly Jackson is the main face of the product.

Is there any reference to the notion to looking (voyeurism)

• There aren’t really any references of voyeurism in this music video, but that goes with the artists sense of style and also with the electropopgenre itself.

• Elly Jackson the singer of La Roux is known for being very androgynous, because of this she isn’t going to want the audience viewing her in a voyeuristic way as it takes away from the image she is trying to portray. We can she this as she doesn’t wear feminine clothes and also she has lots of futuristic makeup on she never wears mascara or typical feminine makeup and she has a very boyish haircut

Are there any references of intertextuality

• There aren’t any main references of intertextuality but the main one is the futuristic nature of the video. It features a bold and bright modern set teamed with the artists extreme hair, clothes and makeup creating a ultramodern mise-en-scene
