AUGUSTmeans the arrival o Football season. At my Alma mat

ball is not just a sport but also a way o lie. Every Saturday, everyone rolls at an hour we would not imagine during the week, to put on our Sunday beson our avorite ootball team

Just because youre going to a sporting event does not mean that you havelike one o the boys. It is an opportune time to bring out your ashion know hnew and innovative way. The simplest way is to pair a great sundress with ament necklace. Youll keep cool in the humid summer heat and lo ok ashionthe same time.

Another warm weather option is to pair the ever-popular patterned shortsimple white button down tied. These shorts are available in numerous pat

colors, making it a cinch to nd a pair in your team colors. As the weather gpair skinny jeans with boots and a cute blouse. Youll still be looking ashionwhile keeping you warm as the temperatures dip. Bring a cardigan to put ovtop.

Overall, just remember you can never over accessorize. Any outt can gosimple to amazing with a little bit o bling. Think simple shirt with a st atemlace or a large pile o bangles. Its the little things that complete an outt!

DIY GAMEDAY NECKLACEIve created a simple diy necklace that you can create in your own school colors!

    Supplies Twill Ribbon (approx50")

Beads (each strandneeds to be 13") Beading Chord Crimp Beads Pliers Chain (13", AceHardware has the

    best variety)

    SUPPLIES

Step 1: Cut the ribbon to approximately 50"inches. Weave the ribbonthrough the chain until it is evenly in the middle. Tie a knot at each endof the chain, securing the ribbon to the chain.

Step 2: Using the stopper and pliers, secure the cord to the last chain(near the knot). String the beads onto the string and secure using thestopper at the opposite ending chain. You may want to weave the strandaround the chain for a twist effect.

Step 3: Repeat step two for all 5 strands of beads. Feel free to mix andmatch bed colors and textures and to play with twisting and weavingthe strands for a more casual effect. For a more chunky necklace, you

may want to have more than 5 strands of beads.

There are many ways to make the most outof your small space! Be it an apartment, house,

or in-law suite, there are tricks to overcome

tight spaces in any room of the house.

PaintWhat youve heard about small spaces andwall paint is true; white (or a light neutral)paint is best for small living spaces. White

walls allow light to bounce around the roomto make it more airy and open feeling.

Furniture You might think the best way to hide clut-ter in a small space is to conceal it; this is

not always the case. Pieces like big, chunkybookcases can make a room feel even

smaller. Look for see through storage op-tions that let your eye look beyond them.

You will focus on the spaces behind the fur-

niture, making the room feel bigger.

Avoid buying chairs and couches with bigarm rests. A day bed is a practical option fora couch in a small space and then can dou-ble as a bed for when you have company. It

can be tough to maintain an open feeling ina small apartment living room, but choosingarmless furniture will create the illusion ofmore space.

Decorative Accessories Buy accessories for your small space that

can be used for multiple things. For instance, that big drink pitcher you love, thats too bigto fit in your cabinet, can be used as a vasefor fresh flowers! Dual purpose accessoriesare a way you can keep your counter tops

clutter-free and avoid buying extra stuff that

    cant fit.

As many who have used the site can attest, ebay is a wonderful source for finding vin-tage and new fashions for fractions of their

retail. I have had an account now for 7 years, but it wasnt until college that I learned justhow valuable it can be as a shopping destina-tion. As my fashion sense developed, I favoredless mall brands and more unique and smallerdesigners. There were two problems as a re-sult of my new found discriminating tastes, thefirst was that I couldnt afford anything I reallyloved unless it was on sale. The second beingthat I went to school in Missouri which meantit left a lot to be desired in terms of its storeoffering. That was when I discovered onlineshopping and just how wonderful it could be.

In particular, I developed an obsession withebay due to its wide selection, low prices (forthe most part) and the thrill of winning theauction. So now, I hope to impart upon yousome wisdom and general advice for using thesite, because lets face it, it can be quite over-whelming if you have never shopped from itbefore. This month Ill cover some of the besttips for searching, and as well my most recentacquisitions.

STEP 1: Refine Your Search Unlike other online websites, you cant re-ally just browse by category (unless youwant 200K results for sweaters... no thanks),

you must have a general idea of what youresearching for in mind. My first recommenda-tion is to search what you know. Been eyeinga blouse in store or online at somewhere likerevolveclothing.com or shopbop.com? Heres aperfect chance to see if you can find it for less.Use very specific characteristics like silk stripeblouse or search by using a smaller brand ordesigners. Why smaller? Go too mainstream

and it can take forever to weed results even after filtering by siz

    just try searching Anthropologie

high end? Here it can be difficulfakes from the real thing, generable to find a Prada skirt for undprobably too good to be true.

STEP 2: Use FiltersSecond tip, put a filter on it. Af

the next step is to filter, I start wgenerally I choose a few sizes anot specified, since you can askmeasurements from the seller ifof the true size. I also will set a pway, if its out of my budget, I wtempted. Depending on what yo

ing for, material and style can bas well. This step should make ymuch easier.

STEP 3; Choose Favorites Lets say you found a great itemreasonable price and suits your check out what else that seller iOften, sellers sell many things aof a clear out. Its a great way toother brands and fashions from has your same tastes. If you reathey have to offer, be sure to adyour favorite sellers so you can have new listings. Another way

items to what youre searching fing ebays related searches locathe search bar. Often theyre vewhat youre looking for and Ive to be quite helpful. With that I nto start browsing. Create an acchavent yet, and see what great can find.

turn an old tray from trash into treasure

If youve been watching closely, thrifting has become more and more popular onblogs lately. Not only can you find hidden gems like vintage clutches & jewelry to add

to your wardrobe, but also quirky accessories to change up the look of your home.

For a DIY girl like me, thrift stores and flea markets are a great source of inspira-tion for new DIY projects. Going through dusty antique/thrift stores may not be glam-

orous, but it can sure bring some unexpected surprises.

Darling Go to smaller, local thrift & charity stores instead of big name oneslike Goodwill. Not only will the prices be lower, but since the trafficthrough those stores is a lot less, theres a greater likelihood of hiddengems.

Dont be afraid to dig. When youre out on the hunt, dont just scanthe store and leave. Most stores have years worth of piles- take thetime to brush off the dust and get your hands dirty!

Imagine everything with a fresh coat of paint. Sure, at first glancedirty brown bookends or a rusty tray with 70s colors may look hid-eous, but theres nothing a little sanding and white paint cant fix.

Think outside of the box with repurposing. Old mason jars can beused for tealights in a centerpiece and a vintage ashtray can be

the new dish you throw your keys into at the end of the day.

I found this old tray at a thriftstore for $4 and immediately

    saw its potential!

After a good scrub down & lightsanding, I painted the tray with athick coat of white acrylic paint

    (spray paint works wonders too!)

I decided to go for anombre look, so using bluepainters tape, I taped off 2inch thick stripes down the

length of the tray.A quick seal of modge

podge later, the tray waswaterproof and ready to

    be used.

Lo Agle is a VERYspread out city and whatthey say about the traf-fic is true! So before youvisit, you might want todo a little pre-planningand figure out which

area you want to spendmost of you time. Im

partial to the west sidesince I live in Santa Moni-ca, but each little bubbleof LA is unique in its ownway. For each hotel, res-taurant, thing to do, Ill

    choose a west side spotand a central/downtown

    spot.

    Wr Sy:

Shutters on the Beach isa classic Santa Monicahotel and very popular

wedding spot! Some liketo call it California CapeCod or a laid back Mar-thas Vineyard. Its in theheart of Santa Monica, walking distance to thefamous Santa Monica

pier, Third Street Prome-nade, tons of restaurants,

and the beach bike path, which you can follow allthe way up to Malibu

or down to Venice. Therooms are thoughtfullydecorated, the serviceis great, theres a greatrestaurant, bar and pooland its the perfect placeto catch the Pacific sun-set and watch the waves

    roll in.

If youre staying in Hol-lywood, the RedburyHotel is your spot! Itsa boutique hotel that

mixes modern glamourwith old Hollywood glitz. The ambiance is amaz-ing with lowly lit rooms

and funky music playingthroughout the hotel. Be-tween the record players,

pictures of Hollywoodbombshells on the walls, and the Library bar, thisis the perfect spot for

someone looking for trueHollywood luxury, not tomention its got a pretty

rad view of the Holly-wood sign!

    Wt D:

While your in the Los Fe-liz/Hollywood area, youmust visit Griffith Park.Youve got the GriffithObservatory, hiking,

horse back riding, amaz-ing views of the wholecity, a dog park, grassyareas to picnic, the LosAngeles Zoo, a great

view of the HollywoodSign...I could go on. Ba-sically you could spend

a whole day here! Notto mention the neigh-borhoods surroundingthe park have the mostbeautiful homes. Finishout the day by catchinga concert at the Greek

    Theater, also insideGriffith Park.

    Wr Et:

Los Angeles offers someof the most diverse food

    choices in the world!

If youre in West LA andlooking for a great lunch

spot, you MUST go toCha Cha Chicken (my alltime favorite). Featuredon Food Networks TheBest Thing I Ever Ate,this is authentic Car-

ribbean food at its fin-est and is as laid backas it gets! It looks like abrightly colored shackbut its SO much morethan that. You order at

the front and take a seaton the patio. The owneralways takes your order

and youre allowed tobring your own alcoholin, no corkage fee! Its

perfect on a bright sunnyday. Order the Ropa

Nueva with spicy cubanfries! No reservations,

    very casual.

If youre in the beauti-ful area of Los Feliz orSilverlake, hit up the

best vegan eats at CafeGratitude. This place has

the freshest food andthe coolest vibe. Evenif youre not vegan, tryit anyway! Non-vegans

    have been known tocrave it.

the first place you thinkof for great beaches,The beaches of Dela-ware are just 2 hoursfrom Washington D.C,

Philadelphia, and Boston. This makes it one of the

best bets for a beachbreak getaway with allof its great shorelines.

    Wr Sy:

If you are looking fortop of the line experi-ence then the BellmoorInn and Spa is for you.Its within walking dis-tance to Rehobothbeach and shops down-town. Or better yet, spend a day or relax-ation at their full servicespa. Who doesnt lovea good massage by thebeach!

Another great optionis the Boardwalk Plaza,Located right on Re-hoboth beach, this hotelhas beautiful Victoriandesign, and it even of-

fers afternoon tea. Anaffordable alternative isrenting a house a lotof people rent out theirhomes in the summer sothere are tons of dealsto look into. Bring some

    friends & split the cost.

    Wt D:

The beaches are anobvious choice! Whetherpublic beach or statepark there are miles andmiles of beaches, andthe Atlantic Ocean.

If youre looking fora beachy bar, checkout the Starboard. Ithas great drinks and arelaxed beachy vibe--and let them know thatHeather sent you! I alsoreccomend listening tosome live music on thewater at Rudders withan icy drink post day onthe sand.

There is no shortageof cute shops either. My picks for unique

cessories are Bella Lunaand Downtown Cowgirl. But, it wouldnt be a tripto the beach withoutstopping at a surf shop;Quiet Storm wont dis-appoint! Market Streetis lined with art, cloth-ing, and antique shops.shopping trip.

    Wr Et:

Dos Locos has thebest margaritas in town,

always with a salted rim.Not only are the drinksdelicious, but the foodis to die for! They evenhave stone grill optionswhere you cook it your-self at your table.

Half Full sells wineand handmade pizza.Need I say any more? Itmay look tiny from theoutside but once youstep inside you maynever want to leave.

    SUP?What s

Tired of your old, monotonous gym routine?

Looking to spice up your sweat time, and change upthe scenery? Put down the iPod, and pick up a bikiniand some SPF. Its time to get your body in tune withnature, and leave your tech-savvy world behindWell, at least for an hour.

A growing trend in the fitness industry is thenovel idea of stand up paddle boarding. The emer-gence of the paddle boarding, or SUP, trend has sup-plied yet another option for getting a full-body workout to the water sport world. Many describe SUP assurfing redefined. The buoyant long board supplies

the body with enough stability to incorporate variousmovements while standing up, or even in plank posi-tion! Feeling particularly ambitious? Try out a SUPYoga class for a more diverse variation of the activity.

Whichever way you choose, maintainingproper stance, a tight core, and strong, fluid paddlestrokes will leave your muscles sore, and you want-ing more. Keep those three key elements in mind tofacilitate the isolation of your major muscle groupsfor the optimum, kick-butt SUP work out.

Good news; paddle boarding is not limited toyour beachy vacation destinations. Look for SUP inany coastal, or lake area, as it is a growing trend.

Youll be too busy basking in sunlight and exploringMother Nature to realize how hard those glutes, abs,and biceps are working. Whether you are a begin-ner in need of formal instruction, or looking to renta board on your own, it is quick and easy to find alocation near you. Get out there and sweat it outalongside your journey to being toned, happy, and

fabulous. Paddleboard sessions have been officiallytested and approved by LPF Mag. Have fun!

It would be awesome if wealways had the time to prime, conceal, set, highlight, andbronze, but to save time use a

face product that can do most ofthose things for you. My favoriteon days my face needs less cov-erage is my Garnier BB cream, itsa tinted moisturizer and It givesmy skin a dewy, well rested look.On days my face needs morecoverage I like my MAC studio fixpowder.

2In keeping with the sametheme- buy an all overcolor stick (like NARS mul-tiple) that you can use on

both your lips and cheeks. Thissaves so much time! Dab a littleon your cheeks and blend, then alittle on your lips and youre donewith your face.

3Think shimmery neutraleyes. Use a light gold eyeshadow to combat anylingering sleepiness in your

eyes because it will reflect lightand make you look awake. Dontforget to dab a little in the corner

    of your eyes.

4Eyeliner is not everyonescup of coffee, but I adhereto the school of thoughtthat it goes a long way

in making you appear more pol-ished. However, this is not thetime to try out a cat eye or any-thing that requires precision. Formost mornings, I use my Lorealvoluminous smoldering eyeliner. It goes on and looks smudged inan intentional way.

5Finally, curled eyelashesand mascara are your fin-ishing touches. Fortunate-ly, they dont take much

time at all. Choose a waterproofmascara for lasting power.

e all crave that straight hair with a touch of volume look. But who has the money or time to constantly go to thesalon every week? If you just set aside a couple extraminutes you could rock the look any day of the week.

Start with towel dried hair. Grabyour styling foam and either thestraightening serum or lotionand mix them together. Put twopumps of foam into your palmand then a squirt or two of theserum or lotion (less is more!).Then mix the two in your hands.

Now this is important makesure when you apply the productyou start from the nape of yourneck and work your way up. Ifyou were to start at the top ofyour head, all the product wouldsit there and be heavy. Whichcompletely defeats the purposeof an amazing blowout.

After you have worked allthe product through your locksgrab your brush, whatever sizeit may be and your blow dryer(dont forget the nozzle!)

If you have long hair clip thetop up and start on the bottom.Use your round brush and wrapabout an inches width at a time

    around it

As your blow drying, pull thebrush up and continually wrapthe hair around the brush ina nonstop motion. The morevolume the better becauseyour hair will fall a bit. Oncethat piece is dry and bouncy, move on to another. Each pieceshould take about a minute todry.

Always pull the brush up nomatter where you are on yourhead. You want those roots tostand up and give you volume.

Ok so now that youre hair isall dry give your head a goodshake, and now grab the lastproduct, which I call my secretweapon. Some use hair sprayafter a good style sesh, but Iswear by my texture paste. Usea quarter sized amount on yourfingertips. Now dig into yourmane and rub it on your roots.

LPF: Tell us about your favorite room or piece offurniture.

MK:Mymost favoritepiece offurniture ismydiningroom table. It is made of reclaimed saal wood thatwas once used as doorjambs. What I love about itis that it looks like it had a meaningful past with itsnicks and little imperfections. The legs of the tableare made of steel and have little bolt details. This isagreat piece to mixand match with- I havea benchonone sideof the table with printed pillows, and onthe other side I have acrylic Ghost chairs.

    LPF:AnyDIYprojectsthatyouareparticularlyproudof?

MK: Oh yes! I built a banquette in my dining roomout of 2 by 4s and love it! My mom is the handy onein the family and she was going to help me build it,but she broke her arm on her way here to work on

the project. Since she could no longerpound miter saw or hold a hammer, to build it! This is definitely one of theshow off to everyone when they get tcondo. I am so proud that I was ablewhole thing from the ground up!

Flying, Its not exactly a stress-free activ-ity for anyone. In fact, I imagine its been oneof the most popular gags for comedians sincethe Wright Brothers first discovered what itmeant to experience light turbulence. Butonce you get past the initial anxieties of bare-foot assembly lines, maintenance delays, andkick-boxing toddlers that always seem to haveit out for the back of your seat, most people are quite contentwith flying.

I used to be one of thosepeople. Blissfully ignorant ofthe fact that 100+ other pas-sengers and I were literallyabout to defy the natural lawsof science (gravity in particu-lar) for the next 2 or so hoursuntil the day Iexperienced 1 and a half seconds that changedany level of comfort I once had for traveling by

air. For those with similar fears of flying, I willnot go into vivid detail. For others who may becurious; picture the Tower of Terror ride at Dis-ney World, minus the intentional simulation offree-falling, plus the actual, unintentional sen-sation of free-falling, AND a plane full of pan-icked, unsatisfied customers. So naturally, Ivehad just a teeny tiny irrational fear of flyingever since.

Let me try to break this down for anyone whomay still be under the impression that this is anormal reaction: The moment I feel the first

jerk of turbulence on a flight, an intense stingof adrenaline hits me in the pit of my stomach,

my palms start to sweat, and my stance be-gins to widen. My entire body is overcome withadrenaline and fear. Hopefully weare now all on the same page...the, This is clearly not ok, andyou should probably dosomething to change it-page. Imglad you agree.

If theres anything Ive learnedabout controlling my own stress,

its that distraction is a powerful thing. Themost recent flight I took wasnt particularlystressful. However, when the Captain cameover the loudspeaker and informed everyone

to return to their seats because the remainderof the flight would likely be slightly uncom-fortable, I went into full-fledge panic mode. Iwas in the middle of a great read that a friendhad recommended to me the week prior. Butinstead of stowing my book away to free myhands I kept reading. With every bump and

jerk of the plane I focused harder on the char-acters and the plot that was unfolding.

be asked to ve advce o how t o stress ess. i fd areaso to stress everth i do. its ot somethi ejo; its become a part of who i am.. That be sad, what i have proposed s a seres of stress-reduc

The moment I feel thefirst jerk of turbulence ona flight, an intense sting of

adrenaline hits me in the pitof my stomach, my palms

start to sweat, and mystance begins to widen.

and absorbing the conflicts of others that allowed me to diffuse the severity oftion. Its not something technical that you can execute using a step-by-step proa move in the right direction.

For those of you who may find yourselves in similar situations, remember thamind is extremely stubborn, you have the power to alter your thoughts. In the eliterature is unavailable, talk to your neighbor. Seriously. If there was ever a timcial and divulge into someone elses business, its now. Ask questions. Not abouer, obviously, but about their reasons for traveling, about their families, professmovie. It doesnt really matter. What does matter is that you become interested

cused on something other than the stress. So there you go. Katie: 1, Stres

Our first women in entrepreneurship feature is on the lovely Amy Rodbell of Swell Caroline. Inaddition to loving every piece from her online jewelry shop, she has some great advice for girlswanting to start their own business! Amy has her undergraduate degree from the University ofGeorgia with a focus on marketing and received a MBA from Georgia Tech. She currently runsSwell Caroline from Georgia where she manages the Marketing and Social Media as well assourcing new products all while chasing two kids at home.

Whatisthe mostrewarding partof your role? The most rewarding part of running the business is being abl e to stay close to the customers, hearwhat they want and bring them fun products that they get excited about. I love the process ofbuilding a business and making all the processes in our company work together.

Whatmotivatedyou to launch SwellCaroline? After having children, I wanted to build something for our family where they could learn entre-preneurship first hand and build a business that I could eventually let them be a part of if they sochoose.

Whatadvicedo you havefor other young entrepreneurs?1.Test your market first before taking a big plunge. Grow organically if you can, do not overextendyour business on credit cards based on what you think customers will want. Just because you thinkit is a good idea or product, does not guarantee that others will. I am continually surprised at cus-tomer preferences and often products I think will sell best do not!2.Reward the people who promote you. We are a very young company and do not have the budgetfor much advertising. We try to reward those who promote us every way we can collaborate withand cross-promoting other brands and publications.

Whathasbeenthebiggestchallengeofowning aboutique?Realizing that I cant do it all. I was very lucky to find people who are organized and enthusiastic tohelp me maintain the day to day customer service and shipping. Running after two small childrendoes not bode well for staying organized and efficient. Outsource things to people who can do itbetter than you can and focus on what you do well.

How havepromotionssuch asSwellRewardshelpedinmaking your boutiquesuccessful?Building a successful rewards program is essential. Since we have adopted Swell Rewards, we haveseen about a 30% boost in sales and we have gained a loyal following. I smile every time we sendout a free necklace or monogrammed earrings to one of our ambassadors. They work hard for usand we love to reward them.

Whatareyour hopesfor thefuture for SwellCaroline? For it to grow with our family and to increase the product offerings. We may branch out into otherlines and plan a wholesale line eventually.

Whatisyour favoritepieceinyour boutique?By far our gold and sterling monogrammed necklaces. They are simple and easy to wear every day.Although I sell jewelry, I usually opt for simple and traditional myself. My favorite pair of earringsare my diamond studs that my in-laws gave me when my husband and I got engaged. I wear themalmost every day.
