L a celebridad arqueológica boliviana del 2014 ha sido la “illa del Ekeko”. Hurtada a los pobladores de Tiwanaku por

Jakob von Tschudi en 1858, esta pequeña escultura integró la colección del museo de Berna desde 1929. Tras 156 años, ha sido repatriada por el gobierno boliviano, abriendo un camino que ojalá transiten más piezas. Ahora bien, el Ekeko es ese mestizo gordinflón con bigotes y cigarrillo, cargado de enseres minúsculos en la fiesta paceña de la Alasita. ¿Qué tiene que ver con la escultura tiwanakota de grandes ojos vacíos y joroba?En su obra Tunupa y Ekako de 1969, Carlos Ponce relaciona las figurillas jorobadas de Tiwanaku, de los siglos VI a XII, con Tunupa, el dios aymara del rayo. Ponce hace referencia a los kallawayas, médicos tradicionales de la ceja de selva, quienes atraen la fortuna con un amuleto en forma de pequeño corcovado llamado Keko. Nombres similares se vinculan a Tunupa o a Yllapa, el dios inka del rayo, en testimonios españoles del siglo XVI. Así, la figurilla jorobada de tiempos de Tiwanaku sería un ancestro del Ekeko.Para 1920, Rigoberto Paredes indica que el Ekekoera un ídolo especialista en temas de amor y matrimonio. En ese entonces llevaba ya más de un siglo asociado a la fiesta de las miniaturas o Alasita. En 1781, el Gobernador de La Paz, Sebastián de Segurola, había trasladado esta fiesta del 20 de octubre al 24 de enero, día de la Virgen de La Paz.Y el Ekeko, de yeso y sin joroba, había adquirido el rostro bonachón del propio Segurola. Con las décadas, se consolidará como el “Dios de la Abundancia”, el protagonista mayor de la fiesta de la Alasita.¿Y qué es Alasita? para algunos viene del aymara alasiña, comprar. Otros, como Milton Eyzaguirre,sugieren alternativas basadas en diccionarios coloniales: alaafitha, dejar crecer las uñas y el cabello, o alauisitua, fiesta inkade expulsión de enfermedades. Esto relaciona a la Alasita con ideas andinas de abundancia y crecimiento. En muchas comunidades, las illas, miniaturas de papas, choclos o animales, se colocan cerca de los almacenes en época húmeda, propiciando la producción.Cabe notar que

existen miniaturas desde hace unos 3.000 años en los Andes bolivianos, aunque no es seguro que hayan funcionado como illas.

El Ekeko no es illa, porque es un ser que otorga deseos y no un deseo en miniatura. Pero terminó enlazado con lasminiaturas en la costumbre de la Alasita, según la cual comprarminiaturas y hacerlas bendecir el 24 de enero a mediodía concretaránuestrossueños. Ese día,las plazas de la ciudad rebalsan de quienespersiguen carretillas y títulos doctorales. CamionesyIpads. Cocinas y edificios. Costales de arroz y tarjetas de crédito. La miniatura expresa un sueño que con fe y trabajo se realizará. Su belleza está en su actualidad: si en cien años existen navesa neptuno o máquinas del tiempo, la Alasita tendráversionesde madera, plomo y cartón, en escalaEkeko, listas para ser soñadas.

Pero la Alasita también es una feria singular, donde los periodiquitos se burlan del mundo. Donde juegas en las canchitas y al tiro al blanco, a la lota y la

suerte sin blanca. Donde compras plantas, una alcancía de Bob Esponja, un acróbata de madera, un camión de hojalata y soldaditos de plomo. Donde comes churros, y pasteles minúsculos en un cucurucho. Donde una máquina te imprime el horóscopo o un yatiri ñ..honestlee tu suerte en estaño.Así que, si están por La Paz este enero, no dejen de comprar un poco de la magia andina del Ekeko.

A N D A L A S I T AT he Bolivian archeological celebrity

for 2014 was the “Ekeko illa”. Stolen from the Tiwanaku settlers by Jakob von Tschudi in 1858, this

little sculpture became part of the Bernades museum since 1929. Having 156 years gone by, it has been repatriated by the Bolivian government, opening a road which hopefully more pieces are to traverse. Then again, the Ekeko is that mustached mix-breed fatso smoking a cigarette, loaded with miniscule articles in the Pacenian festivity of Alasita. What does this character have to do with the hunchbacked empty-eyed tiwanakotian sculpture?Written in his book from 1969 Tunupa and Ekako, Carlos Ponce makes a connection from the hunched figurines of Tiwanaku,

dated around the VI century to the XII, with Tunupa, the aymaran lightning

god. Ponce makes reference to the kallawayas, traditional

jungle borderline witch doctors, who attract fortune by the use of an amulet shaped as a small hunchback called Keko. Similar names are related to both Tunupa and Yllapa, the Inka lightning god, in

Spanish conquerors’ testimonies from the XVI

century. So it seems the hunched Tiwanaku

figurine would be an ancestor for the

Ekeko. In 1920, Rigoberto Paredes pointed out that the Ekeko was an idol specialized in marriage and love affairs. By then it had more than a century being associated to the miniature festivity or Alasita. In 1781, the La Paz Governor, Sebastián de Segurola, had moved the festivity from October 20 to January 24, day in which La Paz’s virgin is commemorated. Thus the Ekeko, plaster made and without a hunched back, had acquired the gentle face of Segurola. As decades passed, it would solidify as the “God of Plenty”, the biggest character in the Alasita holiday.But what is Alasita? For some it comes from the aymaran alasiña, which stands for “buying”. Others, such as Milton Eyzaguirre, suggest alternatives based on colonial time dictionaries like: alaafitha, letting both nails and hair grow, or alauisitua, Inka holiday for disease cleansing. These relate Alasita with the Andean belief of plenty and growth. In not a few communities, the illas, miniature potatoes, corn or animals, are placed near storehouses during the rainy season, enhancing production. It is well deserved to point out that there have been miniatures in the Bolivian Andes region for around 3.000 years, though it is not clear if they were used as illas.The Ekeko is not an illa, since it is a being which grants wishes and not a miniature desire itself. Nevertheless, it ended up tangled with the miniatures in the Alasita

tradition, which states that purchasing miniatures and having them blessed on January 24’s midday will surely make our dreams come true. On that day, the city squares overflow with those who pursue either graduate degrees or wheelbarrows. Trucks and IPods. Kitchen sets and buildings. Rice sacks and credit cards. The miniature symbolizes a dream which with enough faith and hard work will come to be. Its beauty lies in its modernity: if in a hundred years from now there are spaceships to Neptune or even time traveling machines, Alasita will have its own versions made out in Wood, lead and cardboard, Ekeko sized, ready to be dreamed on.It is like these that Alasita is also a unique fair, where miniscule newspaper editions mock current worldwide affairs. Where you play on the mini-footbal fields and test your aim in the shooting range, draw a loto ticket and the like. Where you can buy house plants, a Sponge Bob Square Pants shaped piggy bank, a wooden acrobat, a tinplate made truck or lead soldiers. Where you can go to eat “churros”, and other very small cakes wrapped in a cone paper. A place where a machine can print your horoscope or have a yatiri read your future in tin. So, if you happen to be in La Paz this January, don’t hesitate and go get a little Andean magic provided by the Ekeko.

El carnaval en La Paz está cubierto de efectos culturales mestizos que trasladan la cosmovisión aymara y europea en esta zona andina del

país, que es conocida como la “Anata” significa juego y alegría, representando la relación que existe entre el hombre y la naturaleza.

Este tiempo además es del florecimiento de productos de la tierra y simbólicamente es un momento de agradecimiento a la Pachamama es decir a la Madre Tierra.

En La Paz el carnaval está compuesto de varias actividades por la zona central de la ciudad, Av. 16 de julio:

- El Corso Infantil el sábado de carnaval con la participación de un considerable número de niños y niñas disfrazados.

- Farándula Carnavalera en el que participan diferentes grupos de la ciudad (comerciantes, vendedoras de los mercados; asociaciones folklóricas, artísticas, etc.). Las principales atracciones son: el pepino (bufón que anima la farándula con sus travesuras) y el ch'uta (personaje mestizo que baila junto a dos o más cholas).

- En La Paz el Carnaval se llama JISK'A ANATA que es una palabra aymara que significa pequeño carnaval, celebra nuestras raíces culturales con el mundo aymara. Por ello, el lunes de carnaval arriban a la ciudad delegaciones de grupos autóctonos representativos del departamento paceño, con bailes autóctonos como las tarkeadas, moceños, chunchos, pífanos, pinkilladas, ch'axes, kusillos y los tradicionales ch'utas paceños.

- El Martes de Chàlla, o J a c h ' a A n a t a ( C a r n a v a l Grande). Se constituye en el día más sobresaliente de la fiesta, r e a l i z a n d o un rito andino como petición de buenos augurios del hombre y la mujer aymara a la Pachamama, con pétalos de flores, confites, dulces, sullu (feto de llama) como ofrenda, alcohol y demás elementos.

- Entierro del pepino, El domingo de Tentación, la ciudadanía acude de manera

Carnival in La Paz is surrounded by a myriad of cultural effects which translates into a mixture of the Aymara and European cosmovision

in the Andean region of the country also known as “Anata” which means joy and play, and thus represens the nexus between man and nature.

It is the time for the land crops to start blooming and also a symbolical time to be grateful to Mother Earth or “Pachamama” as she’s known in the region. In La Paz carnival is made of several activities to take place downtown, in avenue 16 de Julio to be more precise:

- The Kid’s Parade falling on Carnival’s Saturday in which a bunch of children take part dressed up in customes or wearing different motif masks.

- The Carnival Show Parade in which many a city group (from business people to market stand sales women passing by different folkloric associations, artists, etc.). As main attractions on this day there are both “El Pepino” (masked jester who enlivens the parade with his mischief) and “El Ch’uta” (mixed-race character who is usually found dancing with two or more “cholas”).

- In La P a z

masiva al entierro del pepino y la despedida del carnaval, paralelamente se realiza la entrada de ch'utas en la que participan miles de miembros de diferentes mercados y asociaciones gremiales de la ciudad de La Paz. Cargando al pepino, parten de la Plaza Garita de Lima rumbo a la cancha El Tejar.

Participar de todo este ciclo es una experiencia única, aunque no se comparta la ideología, el hecho de tratar de entender los ritos y la fé de la cultura andina nos transporta a un mundo místico dentro de ésta maravillosa ciudad.

Carnival is known as “JISK’A ANATA” which stands for “Little Carnival”, and celebrates our cultural roots with the aymara world. Because of this, on carnival’s Monday there several autochthonous groups arrive to the city coming as representatives from the Pacenian Department, featuring dances such as the “tarkeadas, moceños, chunchos, pífanos, pinkilladas, ch’axes, kusillos along the ever present ch’utas paceños. “

- Tuesday is for “Chàlla”, or the “Jach’a Anata” (Big Carnival). This is the most representative day of the festivities, when an Andean rite in which both aymara men and women ask for good fortune to the Pachamama takes place, in this the use of flower petals, sweets, candy, sullu (this is a llama unborn fetus) as an offering, alcohol and several many items are of common nature.

- The “Pepino’s burial”, On Sunday of Temptation, city folk attends in a massive manner to bid farewell to the carnival whilst the ch’utas parade takes place having thousands of members from different market places and labor-unions from La Paz city dancing on the street. Carrying the “Pepino”, they depart from the Garita de Lima Square and head to the soccer field located in El Tejar.

Being part of the whole circuit is a unique experience, even if you do not share the ideology, the act of trying to understand the rites and faith of the Andean culture transports us to a mystical world inside this wonderful city.

HINTS FOR THE TOURISTA

Bolivia es un país seguro, pero en la medida en que las ciudades crecen, también lo hace la peque-ña delincuencia. Para precautelar

su seguridad, por favor siga los siguientes consejos:

Para trasladarse del Hotel a otros sitios, es-recomendable que pida un “Radio taxi” en la Recepción de su Hotel.

Al caminar por las calles o en lugares públi-cos donde hay muchagente, no se distraiga y cuide sus objetos personales, teniéndolos a la vista.

Nunca contrate un servicio de turismo en la calle, hágalo siempre en Agencias de Viajes autorizadas.

Existen algunos delincuentes haciéndose pasar por Policías o Fuerzas Antinarcóti-cos. No existen operativos policiales en la calle, no se deje sorprender por falsos po-licías vestidos de civil, cualquier requisa se la realiza en oficinas policiales y no en otros lugares.

Lleve siempre con usted el nombre, dirección y teléfono tanto de su Ho-tel como de su Agencia de Viajes.

Una importante medida de precau-ción es portar fotocopias de los do-cumentos de identificación y guardar los originales en un lugar seguro.

Deje todos los documentos importantes en las cajas de seguridad de su Hotel.

No debe dar el PIN (Numero Personal de Identificación) de sus tarjetas de créditos a nadie y en ningún lugar. No responda a pre-guntas extrañas con respecto a su tarjeta de crédito.

Para cambio de moneda extrangera, acuda a una casa de cambio aun que tenga opcio-nes de cambio más cercanas, no son con-fiables.

Antes de realizer una compra, pregunte el precio en tres o más tiendas con los produc-tos similares, pues varian los precios de un lugar a otro.

Para detectar si un billete es falso, debe ve-rificar que tenga la cinta de seguridad, que las letras más pequeñas de impresión sean legibles, que la tinta tenga alto relieve y que contraluz aparezca el rostro impreso en el billete.

No reciba volantes o papeles en la calle, si require información puede acudir a su hotel, agencias de viaje o puntos de información turística.

Bolivia is a safe country, but propor-tional to city growth, is the amount of petty theft. So as to have a heads up,

please abide to the following recommenda-tions:

To move from the hotel to other places, it is recommendable for you to request a “Radio taxi” (a cab) at the hotel’s lobby.While walking through streets or public pla-ces where lots of people mingle, do not get distracted and take care of your personal belongings, having such at sight.

Never hire a random street tour or tour gui-de, always do so at the Travel Agencies.

There are reports of some crooks imperso-nating police enforcers or narcotic police. There are no such controls on the street, do not let yourself be caught off guard by fake policemen dressed as civilians, any police seize is done at HQ and not in other places.

Always carry on yourself the name, address and phone number of both your hotel and Travel Agency.

An important safety mesure is to carry only the photocopies of your identification docu-ments and keep the originals in a safe place.

Leave all the important documents at the safe the hotel provides.

You must not handle your PIN (Personal Identification Number) of your credit card neither to anybody nor leave it anywhere. Do not answer suspicious questions about your credit card.

For currency Exchange, go to a re-gular Money Exchange place even if you have closer options, they may not be reliable.

Before making a purchase, ask for the Price in at least three stores with similar godos, for prices may vary

from one place to the other.

In order to detect faulty or fake bills, you must check that it has the security band, that the small print is legible, and that the ink comes in high relief and that against the light a printed face shows on the bill.

Do not take of fliers or leaflets on the street, in case of needing information you can always turn to your hotel, travel agencies or tourist information centers.
